About us
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

Our researchers have found an increase in the number of children and young people admitted to acute medical wards because of a mental health concern. The study reported a 65% increase in the number of children and young people admitted in England between 2012 and 2022. Published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health journal, the new study is the first to analyse national trends in mental health admissions of children and young people to acute medical wards. Funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR GOSH BRC), researchers analysed data on all admissions of five to 18-year-olds to acute medical wards in England from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2022. ๐ข Senior author, Dr Lee Hudson, consultant general paediatrician at GOSH and honorary senior lecturer at UCL GOS ICH, said: โOver the past decade, we've observed a significant rise in mental health admissions among children and young people to acute medical wards. Although there has been attention paid to increased referrals to community mental health services and inpatient mental health settings, admissions to general acute medical settings feels like a piece of the jigsaw missing in the story.โ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gKzUpTaB - Did you know that #GOSH has been named the top paediatric hospital in Europe on Newsweekโs Worldโs Best Specialized Hospitals 2025 list for a fourth consecutive year and in the top five in the world. Our researchers have received more than ยฃ6m in funding from the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) to lead a revolutionary study to find the best treatments for critically ill children in paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) across the country. The Paediatric Intensive Care Adaptive Platform Trial (PIVOTAL) will test multiple different research questions and treatments at the same time to identify the best care for children admitted to PICUs as quickly and efficiently as possible with the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) clinical trials unit and Paediatric Critical Care Society Study Group (PCCS-SG). ๐ข Professor Mark Peters, consultant paediatric intensivist at GOSH and professor of paediatric intensive care at UCL Great Ormond St Institute of Child Health, and lead for the trial, said: โWeโre thrilled to have received this funding from the NIHR which we hope will improve the care to some of the sickest children across the country. It currently takes several years to determine which treatments are safest to use in children, and we expect this novel trial design will provide more of these answers more quickly. While children on intensive care are our focus, if the study delivers as planned, it would support the uptake of this more efficient trial design across all of clinical research.โ Read more: https://lnkd.in/e_fGzbMq ๐ฌ - ๐ฌ Volunteers and staff at #GOSH were thrilled to feature in a special episode of Blippi: Hospital Helpers. In this heartwarming episode, Blippi meets volunteer Shirley and her therapy dog Ted, Play Team members Tania and Holly, and GOSH Arts ballerina Tara, to see how we try to support patients and families while they visit the hospital. Blippi also met Amari whoโd decorated his room and blue and orange ready for the visit. You can see his reaction here https://bit.ly/3C2hN5U

Cast your vote to decide the winner of our image competition! ๐ Our amazing staff and researchers have submitted some incredible images to the competition and our three finalists have now been chosen by our voting panel. React to this post to vote: ๐ 1 โ Custom Craniofacial Implants ๐ 2 - Little Brain โค๏ธ 3 - Blooming Barrier Be quick โ voting begins now and closes at midday on Friday 17 January! Not sure which one to vote for? Find out more about the images and what they show us: ๐ 1 โ Custom Craniofacial Implants, by Luke Smith Craniofacial patients who are either born with a bone defect, or acquire one from traumatic injury or a previous surgery often need reconstructive surgery to repair their bone structure. By designing and producing bespoke implants tailored to each specific patient, we can get better visual outcomes, reduce surgical times, reduce risks, lower blood transfusions, and achieve better patient satisfaction. ๐ 2 - Little Brain, by Reem Alkharji The neurons in the brain communicate to help us think, move, and feel. Studying these cells is crucial for understanding behavioural and cognitive problems in diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the focus of my research. Creating a brain cell environment outside the body using organoids in a dish allows us to examine how these cells behave in disease situations closely. This image presents a healthy cerebellum organoid in the stage of differentiation I test in my research. โค๏ธ 3 - Blooming Barrier, by Lucy Holland My research investigates Hirschsprung's disease, a congenital condition where children are born with sections of their intestine lacking proper nerve innervation. This primarily affects the colon, which when stained and viewed under a microscope, unexpectedly resembles a field of delicate blue daisies. Scroll through the images below and react to this post to vote! #Research #Innovation #Science #Healthcare #GOSH #ImageCompetition - 5 ways that we are using AI to support care for children and young people ๐ As a digitally advanced hospital, we are always looking for ways to make better use of data and technology to improve the care we provide and better support our staff. When used properly AI has the potential to enhance care, speed up research and free up time for other important tasks. ๐ก Below are 5 examples of how we are currently testing and developing AI at GOSH, with links to find out more! 1. After successful early phases with GOSH, we are currently leading a pan-London trial of an ambient AI tool to enhance consultation experience for staff and patients, in partnership with AI company TORTUS ๐ https://lnkd.in/eKVx4_ve2. Our long-term NHS-Industry partnership with Roche UK is harnessing the power of data and artificial intelligence to co-develop digital tools aimed at identifying better ways to care for children and young people with rare and complex diseases. ๐ https://lnkd.in/ek__j9nu3. Our Radiologists and PhD students are developing AI tools that can support clinicians to detect wrist fractures in X-rays, and we were recently awarded funding to progress this work even further. ๐ https://lnkd.in/eUhPNdTw4. We have developed an AI process that can quickly and accurately scan through Friends and Family Test documents, allowing us to more rapidly collate feedback about the care we provide so that we can implement changes. 5. We are providing support for AI and Machine Learning as part of the new NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Paediatrics and Child Health , which is being led by Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust ๐ https://lnkd.in/eQ3RtcwSPatient safety is our priority, so strict governance processes are in place to ensure that all of the tools are safe and secure.
