Dedicated to a safe, fair, and sustainable mining and metals industry.
About us
ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

I talked about my breakfast this morning to explain mining to 80+ governments at the UN in Geneva today 🍌 Just like you can't trace individual pieces of the banana that was blended into my green smoothie I wolfed down this morning, it's impossible today to - at scale - track and trace a mineral from underground to your phone. Ores and concentrates from different mined and recycled sources are often blended together to produce the materials that end up in our everyday products. This was in response to a question about how we can deliver Actionable Recommendation 2 from the UN Secretary General's Panel on Critical Minerals i.e. the development of a global traceability mechanism. It's a noble and important vision, with exciting pockets of progress like the Global Battery Alliance, but doing it at scale will need major breakthroughs, much of which I think will come from outside the sector. Thanks Greg Radford and IGFMining for having me, and congrats on your 20th Anniversary! - Data science techniques are helping the mining and metals industry make sense of vast amounts of information, enabling them to refine and redefine processes to better prepare for the impacts of climate change. This knowledge is also essential for supporting the prosperity of communities worldwide. Yet, with nearly half of the global population still lacking internet access, an inequality in resilience remains clear. ICMM members recognise their potential to support governments in developing ICT skills and infrastructure in their areas of operation, contributing to countries’ efforts to achieve their sustainable development goals. Discover how mining companies can strengthen climate resilience for their operations and surrounding communities in our joint publication with the IFC: https://lnkd.in/g6_6-vhD
- The production of minerals and metals critical to the energy transition creates its own emissions footprint. That’s why, in 2021, ICMM members committed to reach net zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 or sooner, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Since then, ICMM members have made progress in reducing Scope 2 emission by increasing renewable energy use at mines worldwide. Today, some mines operate fully on renewables — helping drive clean energy growth across regions and countries. Members have also launched over 70 initiatives to reduce Scope 3 emissions. These efforts include investments in cleaner steelmaking technologies, reducing emissions in ore shipping, and developing low-emission products like iron briquettes. - Metals and minerals are the building blocks of sustainable development, forming the foundation for products across every industry — from renewable energy technologies to sustainable transport solutions. On average, value chain emissions generated beyond the mine site represent the largest portion of a company’s total emissions. Rising to as high as 90% for some commodities. Reducing scope 3 emissions is critical for the mining and metals industry, and ICMM members are embracing their role in supporting customers and suppliers on their own decarbonisation journeys. It's been a busy few months on tailings at ICMM! In September, we partnered on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Global Summit on Mine Tailings Innovation, convening researchers, industry experts, innovators and start-ups, manufacturers, and government and regulatory officials around accelerating the development of solutions to re-use, reduce and reimagine mine tailings. In a recent interview with Engineering & Mining Journal's Carly Leonida, ICMM’s Co-COO Aidan Davy discussed how the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) is driving responsible practices across the mining industry, prioritising safety, transparency, and environmental stewardship. As Antonia Mihaylova noted at a recent Tailings and Mine Waste Conference panel, the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative is seeking to simplify the landscape of responsible mining standards which will help to improve consistency in tailings management more widely. Read more about Aidan Davy’s insights on tailings management: https://lnkd.in/gSD9Fjjc - ICMM’s policy and public affairs lead John C. H. Lindberg FRSA will be speaking on transition plans for hard-to-abate sectors, with a spotlight on standard setting. Join us and Climate Action at the Sustainable Innovation Forum 2024, the largest multistakeholder event during #COP29 taking place on the 13-14 Nov. 🔗Click here to register: https://j1l.in/kZhLHj #SIF24

📢At COP28 last year, almost 120 nations committed to an ambitious goal: tripling the world’s installed renewable energy capacity by 2030. To make this happen, we’ll need significant supplies of minerals and metals – in fact, an estimated 300+ new mines' worth. We know mining comes with its own climate impacts. That’s why, back in 2021, ICMM members made a critical commitment to reach net zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050 or sooner, in line with the Paris Agreement’s goals. Over the next 10 days, policymakers, civil society and businesses will gather at COP29 to keep pushing towards a 1.5C future🌡️. Mining has a clear role to play, but not at any cost. Discover how ICMM is engaging at #COP29 to drive meaningful progress: https://lnkd.in/ep8TtaUr - At #COP16, the ‘implementation COP’ for nature, leaders from all sectors joined forces to advance the Global Biodiversity Framework. But real success is measured by the action that follows. ICMM members committed to driving a nature positive future earlier this year, setting a new standard for biodiversity and ecosystem resilience in our industry. Guided by the Framework, we’re focused on: 1️⃣ Advancing biodiversity commitments across operations and landscapes. 2️⃣ Raising the bar on biodiversity through our Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative, shaped by stakeholder insights. 3️⃣ Advocating for stronger protections for World Heritage Sites and high environmental standards in mining. With collaboration, we can accelerate nature-positive progress across the sector. Learn more at Nature.ICMM.com.
