As we deliver the UK's longest road tunnel, we're privileged to have some of the country's leading tunnelling specialists helping us to shape the future of the industry, including Jag Chima, who has just been elected to the British Tunnelling Society Committee. Thank you to everyone who gives their time to support the industry beyond their everyday roles during Volunteers' Week. NEW COMMIITTEE MEMBERS + VOLUNTEER WEEK Following the British Tunnelling Society Annual General Meeting on 21st May, we are pleased to announce that Alex Vaughan, Christoph Eberle, Jag Chima & Mark Kirkbride have been elected to the BTS Committee as Trustees of the society; whilst, Alastair Smith and Richard Sutherden have been elected as the Chair and Vice-Chair respectively. We wish them all the best for their terms ahead. The AGM also saw Bethan Haig, John Kinnear & Ken Kwok retire from the Committee after serving their 3 years term. We would therefore like to thank our retiring members for all their contributions whilst on the committee. We would also like to thank John Corcoran for his leadership as the Chair between 2024 and 2026, and look forward to him continuing on the Committee as the Past-Cahir. Finally, during the 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 (1st to 7th June), as a volunteer-driven organisation, the British Tunnelling Society and British Tunnelling Society Young Members would like to once again express their heartfelt appreciation to both committee members and wider contributors who generously give their invaluable time and expertise to support and advance the wider tunnelling industry through BTS, as well as ITA-AITES, initiatives. Hydrogen power is here! Earlier this month, we joined industry leaders at the Tilbury Thames Hydrogen Hub event – an exciting initiative showcasing hydrogen live in action across the port and wider Thames Estuary. The #LowerThamesCrossing recently secured 2,500 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen from GeoPura, which will be used to replace 12 million litres of diesel and save over 30,000 tonnes of carbon. We’re excited to be part of the momentum building behind hydrogen, and watching as it accelerates the UK’s journey to #NetZero.

Throwback to our recent hydrogen showcase at the Port of Tilbury where industry leaders came together to see hydrogen in action across ports, maritime, construction and transport. The event highlighted what hydrogen is already delivering commercially today, from production and refuelling through to large-scale deployment in real-world applications. Consortium Parliamentary Reception highlights national importance of the Lower Thames Crossing. In March, parliamentarians and representatives from infrastructure, construction, and logistics got together with suppliers from across #Kent, #Essex and the UK to highlight the national economic importance of the #LowerThamesCrossing as work on the project gets underway. Simon Lightwood MP, Minister for Roads and Buses, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the scheme and the vital role infrastructure investment plays in supporting economic growth and improving connectivity across the UK. Veterans and military leavers - Are you looking for your next career opportunity? Enrolment starts this week! A free construction training programme at the #LowerThamesCrossing Skills Hub in #Gravesham is helping ex-military personnel transfer their skills into civilian careers in construction and infrastructure. Delivered by The Skills Centre in partnership with the Lower Thames Crossing and Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE), the programme offers: Green CSCS Card Level 1 Health & Safety Award Level 1 Certificate in Basic Construction Skills Manual Handling training Personal wellbeing support Participants will also receive tailored career guidance, confidence building support and opportunities to network with other ex-military personnel already working in industry. Construction of the Lower Thames Crossing is now underway and we’re committed to helping local people gain the skills needed for long-term careers across the project and wider industry.
