The week just flew in at BT Sourced, its already Friday and our last sustainability week session closed out what was a really impactful number of days. The goal for the week was to unpack the fundamentals around climate change, circular economy, human rights and diversity, equity and inclusion so that we all have a common understanding, and no one is left behind on our journey. Today’s topic was Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and our Services Procurement Director, Tim Butler facilitated, joined by OSITA MADU - Senior Diversity and Inclusion Specialist, BT Group, Reshma Sheikh - Managing Director, MSDUK and Carrie Nelson, CSMP, CSP - RVP, Customer Success, Candex. .... and what a day it was!!! InclusivityEducation, along with 5 other businesses, was awarded grants all thanks to Fiserv and MSDUK who are driven toward supporting minority owned businesses through the #backtobusiness initiative. What was even more exciting was that we had an opportunity to talk about dyslexia and highlight the impact it has on individuals' education, careers and personal lives. While assistive technology is helpful, at Inclusivity Education, we believe that it is even more beneficial to develop literacy so that dyslexic children and adults (because it's never too late) can acquire sustainable, life long skills that will enable them to succeed in all areas of life. Literacy is a life skill, we learn through the written word, professional communication is channeled through the written word, helping our children with school work is based on being comfortable with the written word. Our mission is to ensure as many children and adults develop literacy skills through explicit and direct instruction based on the science of reading. According to the British Dyslexia Association and the International Dyslexia Association , traditional phonics approaches are not suitable for those with reading and spelling difficulties, we have the solution through the #OrtonGillingham Approach and it has proven itself repeatedly. Inclusivity Education is growing and we are inviting schools, companies, local authorities, thought leaders and change makers to join us. Thank you to Fiserv for this opportunity and to Lorraine Deschamps MBE for your encouragement. Finally, thank you to Raj Pattani for your continued support and mentorship. Vincenzo's Response: 1. Partnership Introduction: "My partnership with Feras Al-Moubayed began with a shared vision to enhance Deaf accessibility in businesses. Feras and his team at Deaf Accessibility have been incredibly supportive throughout this journey." 2. 🌟 A Heartfelt Thank You! 🌟 I want to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible opportunity to speak at the MSDUK and ESDP Conference 2024 last week. I'm incredibly proud of the success we achieved together. Seeing so many companies eager to learn about BSL Awareness and breaking barriers for Deaf people was truly inspiring. Key Takeaways: 1. Daily Challenges: Deaf people face difficulties at banks, shops, and more, simply because staff aren’t trained in Deaf communication. 2. Mental Health Impact: Lack of Deaf awareness can turn simple tasks into stressful experiences for both Deaf individuals and staff. 3. Misunderstandings: A group of Deaf friends once told airport staff they were Deaf, and they brought wheelchairs—highlighting the lack of understanding about different disabilities. Additional Insights for Companies: 1. Developing Awareness of Deaf Access Needs: Understanding the unique challenges Deaf individuals face in various settings. 2. Exploring the Impact of Lack of Access: Discuss how inadequate access can affect the health and well-being of Deaf people. 3. Basic Facts About Signed Languages: Providing insights into the different signed languages and their significance. 4. Technological Advances: Examining tools and technologies that can aid communication and accessibility. 5. Preferred Terminology: Learning which terms and phrases are respectful and preferred by the Deaf community. 6. Empowering Deaf Individuals: Strategies for better support and empowerment through access and inclusion. 7. Basic British Sign Language (BSL): Teaching some introductory BSL to facilitate better communication. Benefits of Training: Deaf Awareness Training saves time, improves service, and helps companies follow the law; Like at Nespresso UK, where staff are now confident in assisting Deaf customers. Wow, what lovely feedback! "It was a great conference, and so many people said that their favourite talk was from Feras! Great; to be involved! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼" I am so inspired by Feras Al-Moubayed at MSDUK’s fantastic supplier diversity event the largest in Europe. Feras, your story and what you have accomplished are wonderful, and kudos to Vincenzo D'Aniello from Nestlé and Nespresso UK for making a difference to Feras’ business and your customers! The highlight for me was definitely connecting with brilliant minds and seeing everyone championing supplier diversity. A special shoutout to Vincenzo for your unwavering support you are a true inspiration! Thank you, Gurmit, for being such an encouraging host. You created a welcoming environment that allowed me to share my story authentically and passionately. And finally, thank you to all for welcoming me! With over 300 attendees, I was just one Deaf person in the room. One isn’t enough. I hope next year we’ll see more Deaf people welcomed into this incredible space. Together; let’s commit to removing barriers and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and understood.- +2
