In recognition of World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (November 18-24), MSD Animal Health is dedicated to combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by focusing on three key pillars: prevention, early detection, and responsible treatment. Prevention involves comprehensive vaccination programs, biosecurity measures, and overall animal health management to reduce the needs for antibiotics. Early detection through advanced monitoring systems and diagnostics, identifies diseases sooner which prevents them from spreading and reduces the number of animals that need to be treated with antibiotics. When treatment is necessary, responsible antibiotic use is the only way to combine animal health, animal welfare and efficacy for future of a sustainable food supply. AMR is a multifaceted challenge that requires a unified effort. On Thursday 24th October, MSD Animal Health UK had the pleasure of meeting James Evans MS, the Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs in Wales, at our customers Elwyn and Claire Jones’ farm near Builth Wells, Wales. During the visit, the Shadow Minister gained insights into how our technology solutions provide farmers with the accessibility to real-time data that increases efficiencies on farms and allows farmers to utilise resources better. Elwyn showed the Shadow Minister how our SenseHub Cow-Calf monitoring system supplies him with data that assists with the reproductive and health performance of his commercial Limousin cross beef cow herd. The importance of testing and vaccination schemes for the control and eradication of disease in herds was also discussed. We thank the Shadow Minister for taking the time to learn more about the impacts we are creating for our customers and thank you Elwyn and Claire for hosting the visit!
🐄 Willow Tree Farm: pioneering tech-driven dairy farming 🐄 Willow Tree Farm in Yorkshire is navigating the challenges of labour shortages and market volatility in the dairy sector, as featured in our whitepaper, 'Time for Tech'. Run by Howard and Tom Pattison, this AHDB strategic dairy farm is focused on improving sustainability through enhanced production efficiencies. Since installing SenseHub™ Dairy in March 2022, they’ve made significant improvements to their 280-strong Holstein herd. 🐖 Meet Joe Wilson: precision pig farming pioneer 🐖 Joe Wilson, a feature farmer in our 'Time for Tech' whitepaper, is a third-generation pig farmer from North Yorkshire. Joe is leading the way in precision pig farming, managing a 750-sow breeding unit, and embracing technology to transform his business. As the first UK farmer to trial MSD Animal Health UK’s LeeO ear tagging system, Joe is tracking individual pigs from birth to slaughter. However, with a little planning ahead you can ensure a more stress-free Bonfire Night for you and your animals. Here's a few quick tips from the RSPCA and Blue Cross UK to help keep your pet calm: For dogs and cats: Keep them indoors, create a safe space with familiar sounds like TV or music, and let them hide if they need to. Also remember, microchipping is important in case they get startled and run. For small pets: Move hutches or cages indoors, provide extra bedding for them to burrow, and cover enclosures to muffle the noise. For horses: Keep them in familiar surroundings, clear their space of hazards, and inform nearby firework organisers so displays can be planned accordingly.
