- When we work together, our impact is stronger. 💪 Together we can #GrowAGenerationOfReaders to ensure that no child is left behind.
Today, we’ve launched the results of our three-year Changing the Story Reading Programme with our charity partner, the National Literacy Trust. We're so proud to share that the scheme consistently improved pupils’ reading ability, with the percentage of participating pupils reading below the national average decreasing from 50.7% before taking part to 27% after taking part. The percentage reading above the national average increased six-fold (1.4% to 8.8%). The programme was created to tackle low levels of literacy and reading enjoyment among primary school children in 38 primary schools, with a focus on those eligible for free school meals. More than 26,000 Hodder Education Reading Planet books and Hachette Children's Group books were donated to the participating schools, along with other resources and teacher training delivered by our colleagues. Hachette UK’s aim with our charity and outreach work is to improve literacy for all and to ensure that it’s easy for everyone to access and discover reading for pleasure, and we’re absolutely over the moon to see these results and the tangible impact the programme has had on children’s reading skills and confidence. Last week, we revealed that children's reading enjoyment is at an all-time low, with just 1 in 3 young people aged 8-18 saying they enjoy reading in their free time. We're determined to turn this around as reading for pleasure brings huge benefits to a child's life outcomes. To support this, we’re expanding professional training for teachers and providing high-quality, curriculum-linked resources. Comics, in particular, are an effective way to engage reluctant readers, especially boys — the gender gap in reading enjoyment has tripled over the last year and fewer than 1 in 5 boys now read daily. Notably, young people who read comics are more confident in their reading skills, with 86% rating themselves as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ readers compared to 76% of non-comic readers. Join us on Thursday 23 January at St Matthew’s CofE School, Birmingham, for The Big Picture CPD, where we’ll explore how picture books and comics can foster reading enjoyment and literacy skills across Key Stages 1-3 and pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This evidence-based workshop, supported by Peters will equip you with strategies to integrate visual texts into your teaching and inspire a love of reading in your school. Yesterday we revealed that reading enjoyment levels among young people are the lowest we’ve ever recorded. But what if every child read for pleasure every day? The impact on our economy and future workforce would be huge. Research by WPI Strategy for the National Literacy Trust and British Land reveals a compelling vision for the future: If all school-aged children in the UK embraced daily reading for pleasure, we could see an increase of 1.1 million students achieving five good GCSEs by age 16 within the next 30 years. These academic achievements translate into a staggering boost in lifetime earning potential — £57,500 more per individual. This shift could contribute £4.6 billion to the UK’s GDP each year! Imagine a future where our workforce is not only more literate but also more creative, confident, and equipped with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex world. Together, we can achieve it. If your business is interested in supporting our work to #GrowAGenerationOfReaders, the first step is to become a signatory for our Vision for Literacy Business Pledge. Today National Literacy Trust launched the results of our annual survey of children's reading. In 2024 only 34.6% of 8-18 year olds were enjoying reading out of school. This is down from 43% last year and is the lowest figure ever recorded in the 19 years of the survey. The same research also explains why this is such an urgent challenge, as it demonstrates the relationship between reading for enjoyment and literacy skills and how important children themselves perceive it to be for their wellbeing and learning. Today National Literacy Trust has announced its own response - to work with 1.5 million children in disadvantaged communities to support their enjoyment of reading. We are also calling on Government to take a lead in addressing this issue, and coordinate a multi-sector approach, repositioning reading as an irresistible activity in the lives of children in the UK. Schools, libraries, early years settings, colleges, publishers, booksellers, authors, illustrators, health professionals, sports clubs and stars, social media platforms, influencers...all agencies that relate to childhood have a role to play in promoting reading to a new generation. We need to think imaginatively, do things differently, listen to children and work together.https://lnkd.in/e_Pw_neG
New research shows children’s reading enjoyment has plummeted to worst level in almost two decades: What does it mean for our future workforce? National Literacy Trust on LinkedIn - We're in this together 🙌. So many families, schools, libraries, charities, publishers, businesses, and more, are already inspiring children’s reading in such diverse and innovative ways. We're so grateful to partners like Bloomsbury Publishing Plc for partnering with us on vital literacy interventions. Our Vision for Literacy Business Pledge is already a 109 strong cohort of organisations committed to tackling the nation’s literacy challenge and improving the skills of our future workforce. When we join forces to amplify reach, influence and impact, we get closer to making reading for pleasure a national priority. Together, we're helping people change their stories.
Our latest research, published today, reveals a stark reality: only 1 in 3 8-18-year-olds enjoy reading in their free time, the lowest level since our surveys began nearly 20 years ago. The drastic decline signals an urgent need to ensure reading for pleasure becomes a national priority. It's time to #GrowAGenerationOfReaders.

Fill in the CILIP AI survey to help the sector find the answers to the biggest AI questions Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents risk, uncertainty, hope, and opportunity in our profession, and we are launching the AI survey to uncover where we stand on this new technology as library and information professionals. The survey aims to gain a sector-wide perspective on the biggest questions in AI right now, to better understand how to use and integrate this new technology: 1. Will AI take away jobs? 2. Is AI all hype and no substance – or somewhere in between? 3. Will AI create new opportunities and what could they be? 4. What is the top priority for AI right now in libraries? 5. Is my service ahead or behind the curve with AI adoption? 6. Is it time to create an AI policy for my organisation? 7. What do we as a sector need most to move forward in a world with AI? 8. How do we ensure AI is used ethically? These are big questions, and we need your help to answer them. Using the results of the survey, CILIP and the University of Sheffield will produce an open-access report to gain a clearer understanding of where we stand as a sector and as individual professionals in terms of AI adoption, use, and attitudes in the libraries and information profession. Add your voice and experience and fill in the survey today (closing date 15 December 2024)www.cilip.org.uk/ai-surveyThe survey combines a mixture of qualitative and quantitative questions to allow you to expand on your answers and share your opinions on AI adoption. Or you can simply contribute by letting us know what’s going on right now in your sphere of work - there's no need to have any experience of using AI - we want to hear everyone's thoughts. As a Trustee of the National Literacy Trust, I was very proud to host an important roundtable at KPMG UK this week to highlight the key role businesses play in supporting early language development, and to build support for the National Literacy Trust’s Early Words Matter campaign. A child’s early grasp on language and first steps to build communication skills are crucial for their future life chances. However, research KPMG UK undertook with Pro Bono Economics and NLT found that last year over 187,000 5-year-olds started school without the communication, language and literacy skills they need to thrive, with children from disadvantaged backgrounds disproportionately affected. The literacy gap also has knock-on costs for the economy. It’s critical that we address this issue for our future workforces. Our valuable roundtable was followed by a visit to the wonderful Children’s House Nursery in East London, run by the amazing Becky Dolamore where we saw first-hand how one of the National Literacy Trust’s early years programmes, Early Words Together, is working in practice - helping to empower families with advice to support their child’s development in those crucial first years. We were even joined by the Gruffalo! To shift the dial on big societal issues like early years language we need collaboration and nowhere has this been more evident than through the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge, which has been building incredible support over the past nine years.
