📢 Fast-growing life sciences startup Scottish Brain Sciences is the first anchor tenant at ONE BioHub - a key industry innovation project in the Aberdeen City Region Deal led and co-funded by Opportunity North East Limited with significant capital funding from the UK Government Scotland, The Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise. 🤝 Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes MSP joined ONE chair Sir Ian Wood KT GBE, Deborah O'Neil, chair of ONE Life Sciences, and Scottish Brain Sciences’ founder and CEO Craig Ritchie and chair Mark Cook for the announcement. 💡 Founded in 2022, Scottish Brain Sciences is accelerating the development and implementation of new diagnostics and therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease and other related conditions. ONE BioHub will be home to its clinical trials centre, which will comprise offices, a laboratory, and consulting rooms. 🤝 The Scottish and UK Governments each provided £10 million towards the construction of ONE BioHub, which opened last year. 💬 Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said Scottish Brain Sciences will help to "realise the region’s ambitions to grow its life sciences cluster while developing and accelerating solutions to the greatest health challenges we face.” 💬 Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: "Economic growth and job creation is at the top of the UK Government agenda, so it's great news that Scottish Brain Sciences has chosen the partner-funded ONE BioHub as its clinical trials centre.” 💬 Prof Craig Ritchie, founder and CEO of Scottish Brain Sciences, said: “The establishment of Scottish Brain Sciences at ONE BioHub goes way beyond a simple tenancy. We are delighted to join a thriving neuroscience and life sciences community in the north east of Scotland. As well as being able to offer cutting-edge research to the local population, we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the universities, NHS, and other life sciences companies in the area.” 💬 Sir Ian Wood said: “I welcome the decision by Scottish Brain Sciences to locate their clinical trials centre in this market-leading facility, which will encourage other pioneering companies to follow suit. The move also underlines the impact of the private and public sectors partnering and investing to drive economic transformation and once again demonstrates this region’s ability to deliver meaningful economic change, impact and value.” 💬 Dr Deborah O’Neil said: “Scottish Brain Sciences is an exciting, high-profile company and reflects the region’s strengths and focus on tackling modern epidemics, including Alzheimer’s disease. This is the first of a series of tenant announcements we expect to make during 2024 and will catalyse further interest in lab and office space within ONE BioHub.” #Aberdeen #lifesciences #ONEBioHub #ABZDeal- +1

💡 North east entrepreneur Chris Herd joined Opportunity North East Limited and founders from across the region’s growth sectors at ONE Tech Hub this week to share his experience of a successful startup. The session explored the do’s and don’ts of VC investment, or in Chris’s own words ‘How to avoid f***ing up your company’. 📈 In six years, Chris has grown the technology management platform Firstbase.com to eight figures in revenue, secured some of the world’s leading companies as customers, and raised $70 million in investment. 💬 Chris shared insights in an open forum including the reasons for seeking investment and how to choose the right investors, the critical role of timing in building high-performance teams and putting the customer first at every stage of startup and scaleup. There was lots of Q&A on the day and Chris stayed on to meet founders 1-2-1 and will come back to meet more founders next week. A few of the many valuable takeaways are highlighted below: 👉 Raise money and get back to work: Raising the investment is not the success point, it's revenue and growth 👉 Invert your mindset and attitude: Investors are lucky to buy into your business rather than think you are lucky to secure investment - create FOMO 👉 Founders and CEO's must stay connected to the customer and product: customers are the best source of funding growth 👉 Understand the game you are playing: VCs want you to grow or die fast. You should want the same thing. 🚀 ONE is building entrepreneurial ecosystems in the region’s growth sectors to support founders and business leaders in starting and scaling innovation-led businesses. 🙏 Thank you, Chris, for taking part of this founder-focused customer-centric support, inspiring and giving back to the community with your story and being so generous with your time and experience. #OpportunityNorthEast #entrepreneurship #TransformingourRegion -

🚀 North east Scotland is a powerhouse of Scotland’s £11 billion food and drink manufacturing industry. Home to farm and fishery-to-fork supply chains, global brands and ambitious startups. The sector plays a crucial role in the national industry output and is poised for even greater achievements. 📈 Over the past eight years, Opportunity North East has boosted sector growth with its funding and resources, building a team of specialists to support startups and scaling businesses with entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and market development. The creation of ONE SeedPod adds a new dimension. 💬 "Food and drink is the north east's largest industry after energy, supports 22,000 jobs and annual turnover of £2.4 billion, and is growing three times faster than in the rest of Scotland," explains Stanley Morrice MBE, vice chair of ONE and chair of the ONE Food, Drink & Agriculture board. “Our aim is to continue to grow the sector through entrepreneurship by inspiring, challenging, and supporting the ambitions of business leaders. I’m very confident about what we can achieve together.” 💡 ONE SeedPod is more than an innovation hub. It will be the first of its kind in the UK, offering a dynamic blend of commercial manufacturing and innovation space combined with unparalleled access to food and drink industry expertise, market insights, and networks, all under one roof. 💬 "ONE SeedPod is a springboard for ambitious businesses," explains long-standing food industry entrepreneur David Kilshaw OBE. He chairs the board of Food Hub (NES) Ltd, the not-for-profit established to develop ONE SeedPod. "It offers a platform to both start-up and scale production in food-grade manufacturing units, a space to develop new food products in the NPD kitchens, innovate processes and digital technology in the pilot plant space, and a stage to showcase products online and in person in the demonstration kitchen. It will be home to a vibrant community for entrepreneurs, founders, and business leaders, to access tailored support to accelerate growth." 📍 With its striking design, inspired by the region's rural vernacular, and its iconic pink cladding, ONE SeedPod will be a landmark in the development of the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem alongside ONE Tech Hub and ONE BioHub - the ONE-led innovation hubs for #digitaltech and #lifesciences. 💬 Mr Kilshaw adds "ONE SeedPod is a unique home for the food and drink entrepreneurial ecosystem that ONE is building to accelerate growth, increase productivity and create new, high-value jobs in the industry. The project partners are investing in the growth potential of new and established businesses by creating the home for practical support to the sector." 📰 Read more in today's The Business in The Press and Journal with perspectives from Scotland Food & Drink, Scotch Whisky Association, Martin Gilbert and others. #OpportunityNorthEast #TransformingOurRegion #foodanddrink #ONEFoodDrinkAgriculture #ONESeedPod
