I am proud for PLS to join thousands of individuals and organisations within the creative industries in standing firmly against the unlicensed use of creative works to train generative AI, and the very real and growing threat to livelihoods this represents.
Publishers' Licensing Services’ Chief Executive, Tom West, signed the Statement on AI training, an open letter opposing the unlicensed use of creative works in generative AI, along with thousands of creators and creative industry organisations from across the world. The Publishers Association, Publishers' Licensing Services (PLS), Independent Publishers Guild, The Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society, Association of Authors’ Agents and The Society of Authors have joined with more than 10,500 creators – writers, musicians, artists, photographers, actors and more – from around the world to highlight the unlicensed training of generative AI models on creative works. This is a critical time for creators globally and in the UK we eagerly await the government’s next policy move domestically. This action from some of the people behind the books, films, music and art we love serves to shine a light on the threat to the creative community from AI companies using content without transparency, permission and fair compensation. That is why, as organisations that represent authors and the publishing sector, we have signed the statement. A lovely week in Quebec for the IFRRO World Congress and General Assembly, and catching up with friends and meeting new faces. With many members across the world now facing common challenges, such as pressures on copyright caused by AI, the community that IFRRO has developed over its 40 years has never been more important. A safe journey home to all those who attended.
