On your marks, get set, RACE! Last week, QinetiQ hosted the Powerboat Challenge for local schools at our marine technology facility in Haslar, Gosport. Eleven teams from across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight were all given identical motors, propellers and a battery, before having to construct and then race their chosen seaworthy designs around QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin. The creativity on display was impressive, with teams clearly articulating their design rationale, also reacting well to on-the-spot challenges, based on their performance in each heat. Some did end up in the QinetiQ repair shop after sinking but this only sparked further enthusiasm as students sought a solution to improve performance. Now in its 15th year, QinetiQ seeks to highlight science, technology, engineering and/or maths career options to the next generation, with aims of inspiring the naval architects, hydrodynamicists, marine and system engineers of the future. The fastest boat of the 2024 Powerboat Challenge was designed by Cowes Enterprise College an Ormiston Academy, while the Judges Favourite Award went to Bournemouth School for Girls for their enthusiasm and team spirit. Huge thanks to this year’s judges: Lorna Wagner, Sharon Jones, Captain Mark Hamilton, Lt McDermmot, Richard Froude and QinetiQ’s own John Bonnar and Andrew Peters. The BBC South team also attended this year’s event, getting to witness the students’ enthusiasm and expertise, first hand: https://lnkd.in/eb5ih7mQ
Gosport: Aspiring engineers build and race model speedboats bbc.co.uk - After presenting our Half Year Results to the market this morning, Group CEO Steve Wadey and CFO Martin Cooper unpacked what the figures mean for the company, our priorities for the second half of the year and trends we are seeing across the defence industry, with members of the media.
British defence company QinetiQ is planning to expand in the U.S. as the country ramps up defence spending, its chief executive Steve Wadey told me in an interview after the company posted revenue above expectations. In recent years, QinetiQ has grown in the U.S. through acquisitions. It now generates about $500 million a year in the country and employs around 1,500 people. “The U.S. market is really important and attractive. We see good long-term prospects in America,” Wadey said, adding that Donald Trump’s win in the U.S. presidential election is unlikely to hinder QinetiQ’s growth because the company is well-aligned with U.S. defence priorities. The plans include expanding the company’s presence in Huntsville, Alabama, a hub for aerospace and defence companies, popularly known as “Rocket City” after giving birth to the rockets that first put men on the Moon.https://lnkd.in/ds-_wUHX
