About us
The Runnymede Trust is the UK's leading independent race equality think tank. For more than 50 years, we have worked tirelessly to build a Britain in which we all belong. Proudly independent, we speak truth to power on race and racism without fear or favour. We are not swayed by political agenda, profit or popular opinion. We are authentic, led by an ethnically diverse team, we draw from our lived experience and that of our wide and inclusive community and partnership networks. From broadening the curriculum to exposing the Windrush Scandal, our work is rooted in challenging structural racism and its impact on our communities. - 'The conversation shouldn’t be about whether children should be strip searched or not. It should be a given that children should be protected. Their right to privacy, their dignity, their welfare should always be paramount' 🚨 Black children are four times more likely to be strip searched by police. Strip searches are traumatic, humiliating and harmful, especially for children 🗣️ Our CEO Dr Shabna Begum spoke to Novara Media about the urgent need to end the police's power to strip search children
- *UK racist riots: A message from our CEO* Dear friends, colleagues and supporters, I wanted to reach out and offer my solidarity and warmest wishes as we arrive at the end of an incredibly difficult week. We are grateful to all those who reached out and who have supported our response, and our work. I am also grateful to the wonderful team that has worked around the clock this week to make sure that we are able to respond to the crisis with the strength and boldness that was needed. Please do see this list of some of our outputs and contributions during this time: • Our statement in response to the riots ➡️ https://ow.ly/qpNy50SUQgx• Our open letter to Keir Starmer, with over 80 signatories ➡️ https://ow.ly/4HtU50SUQgy• We have contributed to media discussions, including a piece by our Head of Policy, Alba Kapoor in The New Arab about the gaslighting of communities of colour during this time ➡️ https://ow.ly/mGI350SUQgt• I wrote in the Tribune about the role of the media in the framing of the events, ➡️ https://ow.ly/6lZU50SUQgv• Contributed to a piece in The Independent about the myth of 2-tier policing, ➡️ https://ow.ly/YaFL50SUQgu• And took part in a panel discussion about online and mainstream media's role in inciting the events on Al Jazeera English's Inside Story. ➡️ https://ow.ly/G7gS50SUQgzAside from the shocking violence, it is fair to say that we have been frustrated with the political and media response. There is of course a need to protect communities but we are mindful that focusing on a policing and criminal response is insensitive to the reasons that inspired the racist rioting in the first place and can in some ways, and in the long-run, cause more harm to communities of colour who have traditionally been over-surveilled and over-policed. We also remain concerned with the mainstream framing of the events and how racist rioting has been able to set an agenda that discusses immigration, integration and 2-tier policing in ways that relies on victim-blaming the very communities that have been impacted by this violence. Finally, an ask; we are really grateful to our friends at Oxfam and Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust who gave us an emergency grant to produce the attached short video that we are sharing across our socials which speaks to some of the issues raised above and which has an important and defiant message; we will not let racism win. We hope that you are able to share and support the video across your socials and platforms. We will continue to work to support all those communities affected by the violence and to challenge the normalisation of racism. The violence may recede but anti-racist work is more important than ever; we are always grateful for the support we receive from our friends and funders now and in the future. If you are able to support our ongoing work please do donate to us here ➡️ https://ow.ly/pqBI50SUQgwWith solidarity, Dr Shabna Begum
