Meet Our Senior Stars! Don’t overlook our golden oldies - older dogs are full of love, loyalty, and wisdom. These senior pups may have a few more grey hairs, but they still have so much to offer! - Miss Minnow has had a tasty Friday! Our harbour seals start off their journey being tube fed a milk formula and fish mix, this tube goes down their throat and into their stomach. Feeds sometimes start at 7:00 and finish at 23:00. The next stage consists of either hand feeds or assisted feeds and this starts when the harbour seal is at least 4 weeks old and has adequate dentition (when they would begin eating solids in the wild, as shown by their mothers) - We aim for the seals to hand feed which is what this video shows as it’s a more independent and less stressful way of feeding compared to assisted feeding which requires our team members to be in close contact with the seals in bite proof protective clothing and equipment. The goal is to get the seal to self feed as soon as possible. We find that harbour seals struggle with independence a little more than grey seals so sometimes it can take a few months, but they always get there with gentle encouragement which can look like a number of things - We leave the seals with an array of fish options, whole mackerel/herring, fillets, chunks, strips, sprats, all to try to peak the seals interest. ❗Seals are dangerous animals❗Despite looking cute, Miss Minnow here is more than ready to use her teeth if we don’t read her body language correctly and take the necessary steps in order to feed her safely. DO NOT approach seals in their natural habitat and be safe and considerate towards wildlife when you are out and about 🙌 💜 #Wildlife #Seals #SealRescue #TGIF #AnimalRescue #AnimalCharity #WildlifeRescue #ScottishSPCA #SSPCALeadingTheWay #RescueProtectLead
- In March this year, the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill was passed in the Scottish Parliament after years of campaigning by us. The Bill includes a range of measures that will give greater protection to wildlife, including a ban on the use of all forms of snares and ban on use of glue traps. We have long been opposed to the use of glue traps, which are trays coated with a sticky adhesive typically used to trap rodents and animals classed as vermin. Sadly, we are still coming across cases of these traps being used. If anyone finds a trapped animal in distress or spots a trap or snare they suspect is illegal, please don’t hesitate to contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.#MuirburnBill #AnimalTrap #StopAnimalCruelty #WildlifeProtection #AnimalCharity #ScottishSPCA #SSPCALeadingTheWay #RescueProtectLead

- After 37 years of dedicated service to animal welfare, Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn will wear his uniform for the final time today as he embarks on his next challenge – retirement. Before he joined The Scottish SPCA, Mike worked with animals and was an elephant keeper at Edinburgh Zoo. Mike started with The Scottish SPCA in May 1987. In his role he initiated and started the special investigations unit, which investigates organised dog fighting, badger baiting and the unscrupulous trade in pets to name a few. He also assisted in implementing animal welfare legislation in Jersey, North and Southern Ireland, Canada and Catalonia. He even wrote the first Inspectors instruction manual that was approved by Crown Office. Mike has been responsible for all uniformed staff within the Society, all Parliamentary issues relating to animal welfare, and dealt with all animal welfare related Government consultations, including giving evidence to both Scottish and Westminster Committees. Mike says it is the right time for him to step aside. In March this year, after decades of campaigning, hard work and advocating for change, the outright ban on all forms of snares in Scotland was introduced as the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill was passed in the Scottish Parliament. A legacy he should be proud of. The Bill also gives us enhanced powers to support Police Scotland in tackling crime by allowing SSPCA inspectors to search, seize and examine evidence in cases where they’re already on location helping a live animal. A truly momentous change that will improve the lives of countless animals, and one Mike, has been driving forward for over 30 years! It’s not just the charity who recognises the achievements of Mike. In 2006 he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 80th birthday honours lists for services to animal welfare in Scotland. He is also an Honorary Associate of both the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the British Veterinary Association. Mike is well-respected throughout the Scottish SPCA and has many stories to share. One of his strangest cases was that of Jimmy the crocodile who was found in the boot of a car! Of course, Mike had to make the sacrifice of booking a flight to Madrid with a colleague and then drove to Torremolinos in Spain to see Jimmy safely placed in a park there. Despite retiring, Mike will continue being an independent external animal welfare advisor on the welfare and ethics committee of Scotland's largest scientific animal research company and also a member of the Scottish Government’s Scottish Animal Welfare Commission. Thank you from each and every one of us for all you have done for the animals across Scotland. We wish you all the very best on your retirement.
- It's a Spider Sunday story! Say hello to Oslo, a Curly Hair Tarantula, and Cairo, a Blue Baboon Tarantula! it's not often we get Spiders into our care but unfortunately these two came in due to a change in owner's circumstances which meant they could no longer look after them. They have both doing great since being rehomed from our Edinburgh Rescue and Rehoming Centre earlier this year! We spoke to the new adopters to see how they were doing - "Oslo is so laid back and does not mind being handled at all. In fact happily climbs onto my hand when I reach into the vivarium I keep Oslo in. He has dug out a hole in the substrate under a little wooden shelter and spends time there but is often out and about patrolling the vivarium." "Cairo on the other hand is rarely seen and spends the majority of the time in the hole that has been dug out under bark refuge. I was lucky to catch Cairo out in the open for this photo! I don’t mind only seeing Cairo occasionally he is such a gorgeous spider I really appreciate when I do. Cairo is not handled as Blue Baboons are both fast and very venomous!" We’re Scotland’s only all animal rescue service. We will make Scotland the best place for an animal to call home. We’re working 365 days a year. We don’t receive any government funding, It costs us £63,000 every day to continue the work that animals across Scotland depend on. Despite this challenging time, thanks to the generous support of people like you we’ve been able to continue our work helping animals in communities across Scotland.
