About us
Sussex occupies a unique position in the recent history of British thought, art and literature. It has helped shape our modern world. One hundred years ago writers, artists and designers recognised Sussex and its landscape as a place of inspiration and an escape from the city. It suited their radical ideas, alternative lifestyles and independent spirits. Today Sussex is studded with galleries, museums, artists’ houses and performance venues: thirteen extraordinary spaces that explore historic and contemporary stories of ‘making’ while reflecting the essence of modern creativity. From the writings of Virginia Woolf to the paintings of Eric Ravilious and the photographs of Lee Miller, Sussex Modern represents a rich assembly of artistic endeavour and talent. A changing programme of exhibitions, events and performances spotlights the best and most exciting contemporary work. In this century Sussex has also inspired a new generation of creative pioneers. Working with the soil and climate, a modern winemaking industry has grown from the landscape and rapidly built an international reputation. With its high latitude, warm and dry maritime climate, and range of soil types Sussex has the right characteristics and long seasons for grapes to mature to full ripeness. Widely awarded for their excellence, nine thriving wineries welcome visitors for wine tours and to enjoy both still and sparkling varieties. With the creation of the South Downs National Park in 2010 the county has opened up new ways to experience, enjoy and learn about its landscape, nature and history. The high chalk downs, cliffs and pebbled coastline are a distinctive feature of this quintessentially English countryside and offers plenty to explore, especially on foot or by bike. Together the art, landscape and wine of Sussex make for a fascinating and refreshingly modern experience – one that stimulates the senses and rewards the curious. All just an hour or so from the capital.

- We’re delighted to announce that Weald & Downland Living Museum is the latest cultural organisation to join Sussex Modern. As an independent museum that rescues and conserves historic buildings and teaches traditional crafts, it is constantly evolving, safeguarding skills for the future while sharing 1,000 years of untold stories. You might also recognise the museum’s Court Barn as the filming location for BBC’s The Repair Shop! Across 40 green acres, visitors can explore more than 50 historic buildings that have been relocated from all across the Weald and Downland area of Sussex and its neighbouring counties, furnished as they would have been in the past and brought together in a village-like setting. The museum also runs a series of courses ranging from craft workshops to MSc degrees in building conservation, as well as a packed calendar of interesting events including open air theatre, exhibitions, walks, talks and seasonal activities. While you’re visiting Weald & Downland Living Museum, be sure to tie in some other nearby attractions in this beautiful patch of Sussex. Stay overnight at THE PIG Hotel in the South Downs or Woodfire Camping, visit the gardens and exhibitions at West Dean College, go wine tasting at STOPHAM VINEYARD LTD, Ashling Park Estate or Tinwood Estate or immerse yourself in Chichester’s vibrant cultural scene: check out contemporary art at Pallant House Gallery or see a play at Chichester Festival Theatre. A 500-acre tapestry of innovative gardens, temperate woodlands, meadows and wetlands in the heart of the Sussex High Weald, Wakehurst is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year, with regular events and–currently–the UK’s largest art installation: Planet Wakehurst. Wakehurst is also an important centre for UK biodiversity and global conservation. It’s home to the Millennium Seed Bank—the world’s largest store of seeds from wild plant species—and the gardens are a living laboratory, uncovering nature-based solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. Engaging with new audiences in Eastbourne eventbrite.co.uk - COMING SOON // Nick Brandt: The Day May Break + SINK / RISE 3rd February - 29th May 2024Newlands House Gallery, Petworth Newlands House Gallery continues to challenge and inspire with its consistently thoughtful programme of modern and contemporary exhibitions. Opening on 3rd February, this new showcase of Nick Brandt's haunting photographs explores themes of environmental destruction and climate change by portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. With a strong focus on the global rising sea levels and its devastating legacy, Brandt’s newest chapter, SINK / RISE, features hypnotic scenes captured underwater off the coast of the Fijian islands last year. Writing in The Guardian, Nick Brandt says: ‘Do we resign ourselves to our fate, to allow climate breakdown to overwhelm us, and for countless many to see their homes and land eventually sink under the rising waters? Or do we rise up and do our damnedest to minimise the damage?’ Book your tickets here:https://lnkd.in/eqU63e6iPhoto: Ben and his father Viti, Fiji, 2023 by Nick Brandt#sussexmodern #sussexexhibitions #petworth #climatechange
