Commercialising fusion energy and our groundbreaking HTS magnet technology
About us
We are developing the technology to deliver clean, secure and affordable fusion energy in the 2030s. Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019. We are the only private fusion company with over a decade’s experience developing the two technologies that offer the most efficient and commercially attractive route to fusion energy; the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. TE Magnetics, our dedicated HTS magnet business division, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting new applications, including science, renewable energy and propulsion on land, in water air and space.

- Our gyrotron has arrived! Inside the box is a crucial fuel-heating technology for future #fusion power plants, set to be installed this year on our record-breaking spherical tokamak, ST40. A gyrotron uses Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH), accelerating a beam of electrons to emit microwave radiation, which is directed through a waveguide to the plasma. Installed on ST40, it will generate 1MW of Radio Frequency (RF) power to heat the plasma and initiate and drive the plasma current. This addresses a key challenge for spherical tokamaks – limited space for a central solenoid, which can be reduced in size. The gyrotron complements our recently announced $52 million ST40 upgrade programme, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Our partners at Kyoto Fusioneering built the gyrotron in Japan and their CTO, Keishi Sakamoto, recently visited us, meeting with Ross Morgan, our Director of Strategic Partnerships. “We’re excited to work with our partners Kyoto Fusioneering to add this important upgrade to our record-breaking fusion machine and continue to operate ST40 to test and push new boundaries” said Ross. “The results from future experiments using the high-power gyrotron heating system will provide critical data to inform the design of future spherical tokamak pilot plants on our mission to commercialise clean and limitless fusion energy in the 2030s.” Dr. Satoshi Konishi, Kyoto Fusioneering’s CEO and Co-Founder, said: “We are honoured to contribute to Tokamak Energy’s ST40, which stands as a benchmark for public-private partnerships and international collaboration. This partnership, bolstered by strong UK-Japan collaboration, represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of fusion energy. Committed to delivering world-class gyrotrons and exceptional engineering support, we look forward to working together to achieve the shared goal of clean, sustainable fusion power.” It's all part of our mission to develop the technology that will deliver #fusionenergy to the grid. - We’re ending the week on a high after winning a bid to advance #fusionenergy development under UK Atomic Energy Authority's £200 million Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation (LIBRTI) programme. Part of the UK Government’s Fusion Futures initiative, LIBRTI focuses on pioneering fusion fuel advancements and stimulating the industry on the path to clean and limitless energy. Over its four-year span, the programme aims to demonstrate controlled tritium breeding, a critical step for future fusion power plants. Tokamak Energy, in partnership with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Birmingham, will conduct a range of lithium impurity, diagnostic and modelling experiments to help UKAEA advance tritium breeding technologies as part of the programme. It is one of 12 experimental and digital projects expected to run to March 2026, and we now look forward to getting started with our partners in the UK and U.S.#FusionforAll

"This will transform humanity in the future." Fusion reactions power the sun and stars. Could the same process also power a sustainable future here on Earth? As Warrick Matthews from Tokamak Energy explains, real progress towards this vision is already being made today. The company's innovative ST40 machine is a tangible example. In February 2022 a breakthrough occurred when, using just a small amount of deuterium fuel, ST40 achieved 100 million degrees Celsius plasma iron temperature. This is the threshold temperature for fusion to occur. 🔗 This month at RE:TV we're unpacking the vast potential of fusion energy. To learn more about the research advancing the scientific basis for commercial fusion, watch the extended interview with Warrick on our digital hub: https://lnkd.in/e7ZEK88F - Looking for a new challenge in 2025? - Lasers are helping us to unlock the secrets of #plasma. Our Thomson Scattering system, pictured here, has been described as ‘a fancy speed gun for electrons’. It fires a laser into the plasma, and as the laser light interacts with the electrons, some of it is scattered. By analysing the wavelength and intensity of the scattered light, we can calculate the electron temperature and density of the plasma - vital data for our research. We’re also developing a new laser-based dispersion interferometer system that will measure the average electron density across the entire plasma by analysing the phase shift of the laser beam as it passes through. We expect this to be an important technology for the next generation of #fusion pilot plants and power plants. These cutting-edge #laser technologies are helping to advance our understanding and control of fusion plasmas, bringing us closer to achieving clean, limitless #fusionenergy.#FusionForAll #Limitless #Innovation #CleanEnergyTransition
- 2025 is set to be a big year for Demo4, our flagship high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #fusion magnet system. Tokamaks use strong magnetic fields to confine and control a plasma. HTS #magnets, which are over five times more energy-efficient than conventional #superconductors, open the pathway to commercial fusion in a spherical tokamak. With operations set for the second half of this year, we aim to gain crucial insights into the performance and interaction of these groundbreaking #magnets in a tokamak configuration, paving the way for the next generation of energy-producing fusion pilot plants. In the first half of the year, our focus will be on completing the build and commissioning of the core #magnet and sub-systems.
