- Today, Alice Bond, WorldGBC’s Policy Research and Engagement Manager joined a panel today in the Blue Zone at COP29 Azerbaijan to talk about climate action plans and WorldGBC’s NDC Scorecard tool. Here are some takeaways from the session: 🌆 WorldGBC’s NDC Scorecard tool is being developed in collaboration with our Green Building Council network, which will give local stakeholders the opportunity to engage with the process and play a role in their national plans to drive emissions down in the #builtenvironment🏛️ Government must facilitate engagement with industry so non-state actors can deliver plans 💰 It is imperative that the policy and finance communities collaborate to deliver investible #NDCs that can support transition plans 🌎 It’s time to deliver global ambition with local action by developing #NDCs that are actionable and implementable Thank you to everyone who participated in the panel: Gulnara Roll (Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC)), Abdelmuti Ahmed Murad (Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure), Hassen EL Agrebi (National Agency for Energy Conservation), Nigel Tonks (Arup). - The scale of the climate challenge is too big for organisations or even countries to tackle on their own. Collaboration at a local, regional and global level is essential to get us back on track for a 1.5C trajectory. So WorldGBC is pleased to enter a new era of our partnership with the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), announced at COP29 Azerbaijan today, for #sustainable and resilient buildings. Both our organisations have established networks that combine regional experience and strong public-private sector connections. This enables us to drive collaboration on advocacy, policy development and capacity building to deliver the outcomes we know are urgently required for a resilient and inclusive future – particularly in communities most vulnerable to climate change. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the GlobalABC to further the political progress we’ve seen in the last few years on the built environment. Our collaboration includes the Buildings Breakthrough, elevating ambition on national climate action plans (NDCs) and supporting the development of national roadmaps for buildings. - Today world leaders are gathering for the start of the #G20Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These heads of state have the opportunity and the responsibility to build on progress from #COP28 and galvanise policy negotiations at COP29 Azerbaijan. In a statement coordinated by We Mean Business Coalition and #Mission2025, and supported by WorldGBC, networks connecting more than 38,000 businesses around the world deliver a powerful message to G20 leaders. We urge them to meet the moment and deliver the policies for an accelerated shift from #fossilfuels to a clean energy future, to unlock the essential private sector investment needed through a #COP29 outcome that commits governments to: 📒Publish the plans: Submit #NDCs that are 1.5C aligned, sector-specific and backed up by clear plans and investment policies. 💰Move the money: Catalyse finance to meet the needs of developing economies through financial reform and a high-ambition finance goal in Baku. Read the full statement here: https://bit.ly/3YSIa5AIt’s time for world leaders to #BeBoldOnBuildings at #COP29, at the #G20 Summit and beyond. The world is counting on you. #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29
- 🌎 The majority of countries still lack sustainable building codes. Some don’t even mention the building and construction sector in their climate plans. While many more have committed only to superficial change. That’s why at COP29 Azerbaijan, we’re calling on governments and industry to #BeBoldOnBuildings in their national climate action plans (#NDCs) and policies. No matter how well laid the plans, they are only effective if they are implemented. So it’s essential to develop an enabling environment with a clear policy framework and roadmaps to ensure effective implementation of every NDC. WorldGBC, alongside the Green Building Council (GBC) network have developed the Zero Carbon and Climate Resilience Readiness Framework to support the journey towards decarbonising the #builtenvironment and achieving energy efficient and resilient buildings. No single pathway will work for everyone. So, over the past year, our Americas Regional Network have been using the Framework to guide national-level discussion and consensus for actions between the private, public and financial sectors. Through this collaboration, they have identified the priority areas relevant for their countries including water, carbon, resilience, health and biodiversity, and are developing readiness actions accordingly. Find out more about the framework and how your local GBC can support your decarbonisation and resilience journey: https://lnkd.in/dDjKddG6Together we can #BeBoldOnBuildings.#BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29
- The building and construction sector is insufficiently resilient to the impacts of #climatechange. If building resilience is improved, people will be better protected from heatwaves, droughts, coastal flooding and sea level rise, cyclones, strong winds and cold. So, how can we achieve this? The building and construction sector is NOT on track to halve emissions by 2030, but the sector has immense potential for #climateaction. We need more policy ambition to address the urgency of #climatechange. Our Policy Briefing paper outlines the successful outcomes for COP29 Azerbaijan negotiations from a building sector perspective. Read our full paper here: https://bit.ly/4e4uJ8aWe’re calling on Parties to be bold at #COP29 and commit to actions in the below areas: 🏛️Enhance ambition with policy action 💰Enable action through climate finance 📊 Strengthen resilience with adaptation planning 🌆 Increase commitments to the Buildings Breakthrough Let’s #BeBoldOnBuildings together. #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29
- With real estate being responsible for a large proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, there can be no substantial movement towards #netzero without major progress on sustainability in the #builtenvironment. Audrey Nugent, WorldGBC’s Director of Advocacy and Campaigns, spoke on a panel in the Blue Zone today at COP29 Azerbaijan hosted by the Financial Times. The Buildings Breakthrough and NDCs can be a powerful tool to align national and commercial targets. 💰 #NDCs can provide businesses with the long-term confidence they need to invest in resilient supply chains and protect assets to ensure their long-term viability. 📈#NDCs can bring new opportunities for market expansion, by promoting and accelerating the transition in both mitigation and adaptation. 🏛️Businesses can demonstrate their commercial intent is aligned with national climate plans to increase the pace of progress. We must ensure decision-makers at #COP29 hear our call to action and act now to #BeBoldOnBuildings.
