Has Heartstopper been renewed for season 4? (original) (raw)

Heartstopper season 3 has landed on Netflix, taking Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring's (Joe Locke) love story to new levels as they express their love, face difficult challenges and take their next steps as a couple.

The series, based on Alice Oseman's comics of the same name, has all but caught up with its creator's work, as season 3 adapts volumes 4 and 5 of her comic as well as novella This Winter. With one volume to be released and one novella left —titled Nick and Charlie— the teen drama could well return for a fourth season, but how likely is it?

Here is everything that we know so far, and what Oseman has said about the prospect.

So far, Netflix has not confirmed if Heartstopper will return for a fourth season, and its future will depend on if the new season does well with subscribers. The good news is that is likely to be the case, because the show is one of the streamer's most popular franchises.

Once the new season has been out for a while, it will be more obvious how well it has done with viewers in terms of how many hours are viewed within its first few weeks. If it does work then Netflix are likely to renew the show, and we will know more as time goes on.

If the show does return for a fourth season then it will likely be the final outing for the series, because Oseman's original work will soon be finished too.

Heartstopper season 3 (Netflix)

Heartstopper has not yet officially been renewed for a fourth season, but if it is it will likely be the final one. (Netflix)

The author and comic creator has confirmed that the sixth volume of the comic will be the last and she is currently working on the final volume, telling The Guardian in September: "I'm only 50 pages in, but I know what’s going to happen, what all the dialogue is going to be, and now I’m just sitting down and drawing it, which is my favourite bit.

"I’m really excited about what’s going to happen towards the end of the story, but it’s also very bittersweet. I also feel it’s absolutely the right time for it to end. It’s very sad, but it’s time.”

So if the Netflix series is renewed there will be just one comic and one novella to adapt until it has run its course, though it could, of course, also incorporate Oseman's first book Solitaire which is about Charlie's sister Tori and her experiences.

While it is no doubt sad for Oseman's fans to learn this is the case, it will also be a comfort to know that Nick and Charlie's story will end exactly as she intended it to.
