Joan has landed on ITV, with the crime drama impressing viewers with its first episode but mostly thanks to the stunning performance of Sophie Turner as Joan Hannington.

The six-part TV series is inspired by the real life jewel thief's experiences in the 1980s, and examines how she came to be one of the UK's most notorious criminals and why. the first episode explores her difficult decision to put her daughter into foster care when their lives are threatened after her partner crosses the wrong people and abandons them.

Viewers came to understand Joan's reasoning for turning to a life of crime to get her daughter, Kelly, out of foster care. And Turner's depiction of Joan's emotional turmoil during this period moved viewers, who shared their thoughts on social media.

Viewers were moved by Sophie Turner's portrayal of Joan Hannington, with the first episode exploring her difficult decision to put her daughter into foster care when their lives are threatened. (ITV)

Many viewers said how impressed they were with the Game of Thrones star's performance, with one person writing: "Sophie Turner showing what an amazing versatile actor she is. You wouldn't even know it's her. Wow! Blown away!"

Another said they had already watched the whole show in one sitting after it was dropped on ITVX, and added: "Binge watched #Joan yesterday, Sophie Turner deserves all the awards! Best thing on TV for years! Well done to all involved!"

Turner may be well known for her performance as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, but that doesn't mean that everyone has seen her in the HBO hit as one person wrote: "Sophie Turner is brilliant, first thing I'm seeing her in and I really enjoyed the first episode!"

While another viewer, who had seen Game of Thrones, felt Turner's acting had improved since her big TV break as they said: "Sophie Turner was very good in #Joan I've only seen her in Game of Thrones and I didn't particularly rate her acting back then. But she is excellent in this, looking forward to watching the other episodes."

Turner is joined in the series by Frank Dillane, who portrays Joan's real-life husband and crime partner Boisie Hannington. The first episode depicted the pair's first meeting and their burgeoning romance as they came to understand each others strengths and flaws.

The TV show is based on Hannington's memoir I Am What I Am, which charts her experiences of child abuse, her struggle to gain custody of her daughter back, and how she rose the ranks of the criminal underworld with her husband in the '80s.

Joan airs every Sunday and Monday on ITV1 at 9pm, and all episodes are available on ITVX now.
