This article represents the first research on this species in the mentioned region. Most of the research activities were conducted in 2016 during the preparation of a MSc thesis titled: ‘Predicting the potential distribution of invasive species A. altissima due to climate change in the Bregalnica Region’. At all sites of A. altissima in the Malesh Region, GPS coordinates were taken. Basic bio-ecological features of the highest individual trees were noted, and core samples for determining the age were taken for laboratory analyses. All collected data were imported in an attribute database to be displayed on a map using QGIS software, thus giving us a detailed picture of the current distribution of the species in this region. The principal findings show that the Municipality of Pehchevo has a larger area covered with A. altissima than the Municipality of Berovo, both settled on the Maleshevo Mountains. The invasive alien plant was found in urban and peri-urban areas, as a part of the ruderal vegetation (pioneer species), along main roads, introduced as an ornamental species, afforested for erosion control or planted by mistake by local population instead of other species (Juglans sp.). The largest specimen (with DBH of about 51 cm, a height of 15 m, and age of about 65 years) was found in the village of Pancharevo. The species appear to thrive up to the elevations of about 1000 m a.s.l.

Thus, observed are morphological and ecological features of the woody plants and their current state in this urban environment. The investigation relates to a seven-year period (since the establishment of the Park in 2012 up to late 2019). After the field research and the inventorisation of the woody plants in the Park, 82 taxa were identified, represented in 1,318 individuals. Most represented tree species is the hybrid Platanus × hispanica Mill. ex Münchh. with 103 individuals (7.81% of the overall urban dendroflora). Most frequent tree including infraspecific taxa is Fraxinus excelsior L. (including F. e. ‘Globosa’, F. e. ‘Jaspidea’, and F. e. ‘Pendula’) with a total number of 146 individuals (11.08%). Concerning other growth form, the mini and small tree roses of hyb...

For thousands of years this region has been populated; much of the landscape has been distorted and on certain vulnerable sites not much of the primary vegetation is left. There are information from the famous Turkish traveler Evlija Celebija from couple of centuries ago, that the area along the river Vardar was covered with dense forest. Today this area is the most vulnerable area to desertification. The purpose of this study is to assess the possibility to do a forestation of the nonforested vulnerable areas with the most common autochthonous tree species and to assess the best suitable places for the reforestation on the area of the Republic of Macedonia. The study area is very diverse in sense of the growth conditions for the trees. For this study dozen tree species are chosen from different climatic zones in which they normally thrive. For identifying the natural potential of the site, three main factors were chosen: soil with geology, slope and vegetation zones. These factors were integrated into a GIS landscape model created through multi-criteria decision process. Finally, suitability maps for afforestation of different tree species were created.

Many Member States will struggle to meet this target, with around half of EU river catchments currently reporting below standard water quality. Diffuse pollution from agriculture represents a major pressure, affecting over 90% of river basins. Accumulating evidence shows that recent improvements to agricultural practices are benefiting water quality but in many cases will be insufficient to achieve WFD objectives. There is growing support for land use change to help bridge the gap, with a particular focus on targeted tree planting to intercept and reduce the delivery of diffuse pollutants to water. This form of integrated catchment management offers multiple benefits to society but a significant cost to landowners and managers. New economic instruments, in combination with spatial targeting, need to be developed to ensure cost effective solutions – including tree...

On the other hand, reservoir sedimentation also provides valuable information on erosion intensity and sediment transport within a drainage basin. A reservoir can be considered as a large scale experiment, as the outlet of a giant erosion plot. With the application of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), the bathymetric measurements of the sediment in the reservoirs became much easier. The measurements done with GNSS supported echosounder are completed much faster with considerable accuracy. Because the time needed for the measurements is much shorter then besides the measurements of the established profiles also some additional measurements can be done. Namely this new method gives the opportunity for total measurement of the reservoirs on profiles and contour measurement. The case study was done on the reservoir "Gradče" which is a small reservoir with total storage of 1.8 106 m3.The reservoir siltation was measured twice (1984 and 1991) while the latest measurement was done in 2013 with echo-sounder with GPS support. Then the total deposited sediment was calculated and the deposition rates were calculated. It was concluded that until 1984 the deposition rate was 2.5 time higher than the later period (1984-2013).The used measuring method, combination of contour and cross-profile measurement, showed promising results.
