The study was undertaken in order to fill a gap in the field of literary onomastics, in which more attention has so far been paid to characters’ names than to place names, and within the research on toponyms no universal method has yet been proposed that could be used to study the functions of these names in any novel. The proposal of such a universal method would enable the further development of research within this topic and the comparison of analyses carried out based on this method. In the long run, it might also have implications for research in the field of translating toponyms in the novel. The starting point for this study is the theory of two acts (which uses the act of naming and the act of using a name). The functions of toponyms in the novel are divided into two groups: permanent and momentary. In the course of the analysis, the anti-didactic function, which has not been identified in any previous studies based on the theory of two acts, was recognised.

Onomastic Investigations II, 2020

The aim of this article is to examine the functions of characters’ proper names in Feet of Clay b... more The aim of this article is to examine the functions of characters’ proper names in Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett. The novel is the third in the City Watch cycle and the paper is the third in a project devoted to the analysis of the whole series. The examination is based on the theory of two acts, an approach to the issue of functions of nomina propria in a novel which presupposes that an onym is a part of two wholes: the naming act and the act of using a proper name. On the basis of these two acts, two groups of functions are identified and defined (permanent and momentary). The ultimate goal of this study is not an analysis of this one particular novel and how it is influenced by the discussed functions, but putting the new literary onomastic theory to use and preparing material for comparative analyses of the functions in the original and those in translations into different languages. The aim of the whole project is to explore the nature of the functions and propose methods of translation that would preserve the functional stratum of onyms in translations of novels. The results of this study are used in another article to compare functions served by characters’ proper names in Feet of Clay and the book’s Polish translation.

Guards! and in its Polish translation. The study is based on the theory of Two Acts; thus the naming act and the act of using a character’s proper name in the novel are created. Both the names that lost their functions and those which acquired new functions are indicated and the activities of the translator that led to these changes are identified. The most important findings include: the two sets of characters’ proper names (in the original and the translation) being different, a few names acquiring in the translation functions they do not serve in the original, and a few more nomina propria losing their functions in the translation. However, it is important that no role (permanent or momentary) is lost completely.

Ma na celu przedstawienie podobieństw i różnic w funkcjach pełnionych przez nazwy własne bohaterów w powieści Feet of Clay i jej polskim przekładzie Na glinianych nogach. Do przeprowadzenia analizy wykorzystano teorię dwóch aktów, która dzieli badane funkcje na stałe i chwilowe, w zależności od momentu pojawienia się i czasu trwania.

The article belongs to a series of works devoted to comparative analyses of functions served by characters’ proper names in the originals and Polish translations of novels from the City Watch Cycle written by Terry Pratchett. Its aim is to demonstrate the similarities and differences of functions served by characters’ names in Feet of Clay and its Polish translation Na glinianych nogach. The analysis is based on the Theory of Two Acts, which divides the examined functions into permanent and momentary. The classification of roles depends on the moment the function emerges and its duration.
