X-ray and electron-energy-loss data are in good agreement. Present theories of atoms and of solids, including some many-electron theories, do not explain these features.

We report here the synthesis and characterization of a carbon nanotube (CNT) catalyst support system enhanced with 'docking stations' along the exterior which limit the surface mobility of ultra small iron catalyst particles on CNT surfaces during Fisher-Tropsch synthesis.

The resultant mesophases, composed mainly of ~8-11 nm cobalt-nickel spinel nanoparticles were highly promising as low temperature hydrocarbon combustion catalysts investigated in a model reaction of propane oxidation.

It was found that unlike Mo-V-Te-Nb-O M1 phases, the Mo-V-Te-O M1 phases may be quantitatively transformed into M2 phases of the same chemical composition indicating that Nb stabilizes the M1 structure. The stabilizing role of Nb and Te was further observed in high resolution TEM studies of Mo-V-(Te-Nb)-O catalysts which indicated that structural order and the M1 phase domain size progressively decreased in this order: Mo-V-Te-Nb-O [ Mo-V-Te-O [ Mo-V-O. The cooperation between the M1 and M2 phases in propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile was observed only at low propane conversions suggesting that the M1 phase is the only crystalline phase required for the activity and selectivity of the Mo-V-Te-Nb-O catalysts in propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile at practical propane conversions.

The time-dependent, local-density-approximation method of computing photoabsorption cross section... more The time-dependent, local-density-approximation method of computing photoabsorption cross sections has been modified to compute finite-wavelength spectra. Electron -energy-loss spectra at a variety of momentum transfers have been obtained in the region of the 4d excitation in tellurium. This region of the spectrum exhibits strong collective effects. Comparison of the results of the calculation with the experimental results reveals a discrepancy in the energy of the 4d excitation at large momentum transfer (short wavelength). Comparison of the results of the calculation with other experimental work on the noble gases reveals other discrepancies and allows the identification of higher order multipole excitations.

Thrombin and histamine, two inflammatory mediators that increase endothelial permeability, can alter F-actin production and distribution. In this study, we use a newly developed image analysis technique to show that these two inflammatory mediators differentially alter F-actin structure. Methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were grown to confluence and treated with either histamine (1 M), thrombin (1 M) or the agonist's vehicle. The endothelium was stained with BODIPY-phallodin, and digitized images were taken of the treated cells. The digitized images of individual human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were imported into a F-actin image analysis program (FAAP) and converted to layers, each one-pixel thick. The program then determined the mean gray level (which corresponded to the amount of F-actin) in each layer starting from the outside of the cell (layer 1) and progressing in one pixel layer increments towards the center of the cell (layer 32). Results: Both inflammatory mediators increased endothelial F-actin production, however, the distribution of the actin was different. Thrombin increased the presence of stress fibers, while also decreasing peripheral banding actin. In contrast, histamine had no effect on peripheral actin compared to control, but did increase the presence of F-actin stress fibers. Conclusions: These results establish that thrombin and histamine alter endothelial F-actin production in different locations within the cell, which can be quantified using an image analysis program.

Good agreement is obtained with available data near 1 GeV and choices are made for the nuclear and nucleon charge form factors and among the phase parameter sets at this energy.
