The model will be empirically estimated, and parameter estimates used to analyze the structure of the fertilizer industry. A disaggregated model for the various nutrients and products, showing the linkages and interrelationships of the nutrient types in system, provides explicit analysis of the energy-cost fertilizer price ratios. A disaggregated model allows for greater accuracy in the measurement of explanatory variables and provides detailed information for explaining future trends in fertilizer consumption.

Unlike some computer systems, ANSER is geared to serve the needs of many interests. The system is designed to meet the needs of a diversified clientele including farmers, county agents, rural development specialists, agribusinessmen, local political figures, and other decision makers. These clientele share a common need for up-to-date assistance in making knowledgeable decisions. The scope of ANSER is broad-based and comprehensive. By studying systems developed in other states, extensive planning by personnel in the college of agriculture has been done to ensure that the system has appeal to the diverse clientele of agricultural economics (Diesslin; Harsh; Kendrick, Thompson, Murray; Payne). This paper (a) describes the design philosophy upon which the system's development was based, (b) outlines the software development effort, (c) describes the hardware selections, and (d) explains how clients will use the system.

The recent farm financial crisis has exacerbated rural poverty problems, and many farmers who were not in poverty a few years ago are now in poverty. Policy options for dealing with rural poverty among those farmers who only recently became poor, as well as policy options for dealing with the persistently poor subsistence farmers, are discussed. Implications and options for dealing with poverty within the rural nonfarm sector are also stressed. Copyright 1988 by The Policy Studies Organization.

An animated instructional module is described for illustrating key production economics concepts.... more An animated instructional module is described for illustrating key production economics concepts. The module uses three‐dimensional production surfaces and two‐dimensional contour maps. Two graphics programs are used together to construct diagrams that neither program could produce alone. Module sequences are based on the “classical” two‐factor, one‐output model, using a production function consistent with textbook diagrams. Although primarily for upper‐division undergraduate or beginning graduate production economics courses, the instructional module provides a useful instructional supplement for advanced students. A free disk copy of the module for use on a personal computer is available from the author.

Agricultural economists are placing increased emphasis on economic theory and on increasingly sophisticated quantitative techniques. Implications of these trends for the future of agricultural economics research are discussed.
