Early identification and correct management of patients at risk of developing DVT improves their health. Objectives: The study sought to determine the risk factors and socio-demographic profiles of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) of patients referred for Doppler ultrasound imaging at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital (DGMAH). Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was used to determine the risk factors and associated demographic profiles of DVT among patients referred for Doppler ultrasound imaging at DGMAH. The study used quantitative methods. A total of 135 patients participated. Patients completed a structured questionnaire to assess risk factors of DVT. They were then assessed for DVT using an ultrasound scan and results were documented. The information from the questionnaires and results was coded and entered in...

A number of students struggle to complete the research component, which is a requirement for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Aim: To evaluate and uncover factors hindering research performance at a South African university, with a plan to implementing strategic and focused remedial action. Methods: Postgraduate students in the School of Medicine were enrolled in a crosssectional descriptive study. Using self-administered questionnaires, students were requested to provide information on barriers hindering research performance. Raw data from questionnaires was captured and analysed using STATA software. Results: A total 125 questionnaires were returned however some participants did not answer all the questions. The major reasons for non-performance were cited as; lack of prior research experience with only 14 per cent having had prior research exposure. Regarding association of research methodology (REME) course attendance with students starting research activities, 90 per cent of those that had attended the REME course, had started research activities at the time of this study. Research supervision was cited as inadequate by 48 per cent of respondents, while 61 per cent cited excessive workload as factor another factor hampering research course attendance and research participation. Most students indicated the need to have research taught and incorporated in the Masters curriculum, with time ring-fenced for research activities. Conclusion: Prior research exposure and attendance of a research course were important factors influencing students' participation in research and should be encouraged. The institution should strive to improve supervisory and mentoring support as well as provide bio-statistics support. There is a need to ring-fence time specifically for research activities in order to counter brought to you by CORE View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk provided by Stellenbosch University: SUNJournals Kisansa and Lubinga Challenges faced by medical postgraduate students in performing research 60 the workload issue as a deterrent to research activities.

The most common variation of the coeliac trunk other than the non-classical pattern was a hepatosplenic trunk, which was present in 3% of the study population. A normal right and left renal artery was present in 88.2% and 83.7%, respectively. The most common variations of the renal arteries were bilateral hilar arteries seen in 3.4% on the right and 9.1% on the left. Renal artery variations were more prevalent on the left than on the right. Concurrent variations of both the right and the left renal arteries were present in 2.4% and variations of both the coeliac trunk and renal arteries were present in 5% of the study population. Conclusion: The most common variation of the coeliac trunk in this study is comparable to other studies in non-African populations. Concurrent vascular variations between the renal arteries and between the coeliac trunk and renal arteries may co-exist.
