An Alternative to Academic Education. Architectural Training in the Schools of Brussels Suburbs i... more An Alternative to Academic Education. Architectural Training in the Schools of Brussels Suburbs in the Second Half of the 19th Century — Following the London Exhibition, Belgium sought to improve its decorative production through the organization of periodic exhibitions and the formation of industrial art collections. Yet it was in the new Écoles de dessin created in the suburbs of Brussels in the 1860s that industry, interior design and the applied arts best united to reveal new methodological and operational possibilities. This paper shows how, by firmly defending the idea of the unity of the arts, these schools provided the impetus for a complex reform of the applied arts, whose ultimate goal was to drive innovation and progress.
