The petals are rich in bioactive phenolics and hence, the development of efficient extraction is required for maximum recovery and bioactivity. In this study, the optimal conditions for the ultrasound-assisted extraction of peony phenolics were first investigated by comparing to conventional extraction and testing the data fit by mathematical models (linear, two factor interactions, quadratic) followed by investigation of cellulase pre-treatment combined with ultrasonication. High amounts of flavonoids, phenolics and tannins were extracted in 30 min under ultrasound conditions of 150 W, 40 kHz, 50 % amplitude, in 70 % ethanol with 50/1 solvent/solid ratio. A further cellulase pre-treatment at 40 ?C for different incubation times combined with ultrasonication facilitated the extraction of anthocyanins (720.48 mg/100 g DW), phenolics (3985.50 mg/100 g DW), flavonoids (2369.28 mg/100 g DW) and tannins (891...

A quantum-mechanical approach to aspartic acid optimized structure displayed negative charged sites, relatively high dipole moment, and hydrophilicity, which recommended it for interaction with iron cations and surrounding water electrical dipoles. A-IONPs were characterized by TEM, XRD, ATR-FTIR, EDS, DSC, TG, DLS, NTA, and VSM techniques. Theoretical study carried out by applying Hartree-Fock and density functional algorithms suggested that some aspartic acid properties related to the interaction can develop with nanoparticles and water molecules. The results of experimental investigation showed that the mean value of particle physical diameters was 9.17 ± 2.2 nm according to TEM image analysis, the crystallite size was about 8.9 nm according to XRD data, while the magnetic diameter was about 8.8 nm, as was det...

Temperature is a critical parameter of food industrial processing that impacts on the food matrix, particularly affecting heat-sensitive compounds such as anthocyanins. Due to the notable scientific progress in the field of thermal stability of anthocyanins, an analytical and synthetic integration of published data is required. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms and the kinetic parameters of anthocyanin degradation during heating, both in extracts and real food matrices. Several kinetic models (Arrhenius, Eyring, Ball) of anthocyanin degradation were studied. Crude extracts deliver more thermally stable anthocyanins than purified ones. A different anthocyanin behavior pattern within real food products subjected to thermal processing has been observed due to interactions with some nutrients (prot...

Thus, sewage-sludge-derived materials were obtained in order to be evaluated for CO2 adsorption capacity. Therefore, the char resulted after the sewage sludge pyrolysis was subjected to oxidation and chemical activation processes by using different quantities of alkaline hydroxide. One of the obtained materials, activated with a lower quantity of alkaline hydroxide, was also treated with acid chloride. Further, the materials were structural and texturally characterized, and material treated with acid chloride was used for CO2 adsorption tests, due to high surface area and pore volume. The handmade system coupled to a gas chromatograph allowed the adsorption efficiency evaluation using different feed gases (rich and poor in CO2) by completed purge of pipe line and on-line check. Additionally, the adsorption capacity, separation efficiency, and CO2 recovery were calculat...

An experimental setup was proposed in order to achieve the pyrolysis process, by varying the heating rate, (5C/min, 10C/min and 50C/min). The resulted products, namely i) char - SSPyChar, ii) oil - SSPyOil and iii) gas - SSPyGas, were investigated in terms of elemental content, high heat value (HHV), low heat value (LHV) and emission factor (EF). The pyrolysis oils obtained with lower heating rate, 5C/min and 10 C/min, presented higher HHV, in comparison with the oils obtained at 50 C/min, which were rich in water. These oils can have a negative impact on the environment, through their combustion due to their high content of N (6 wt%) and S (1.2 wt%), responsible for the formation of NOx and SOx. Pyrolysis g...

Conventional methods have been replaced by novel techniques, but they might remain attractive when combined with the latter. Anthocyanins extraction from fresh and dried red cabbage was investigated by maceration, ultrasonication, and with enzymes. Pre-treatments through drying determined an improved extraction with respect to fresh samples, freeze-drying emerging as the best method. Combined enzyme-assisted extraction with maceration resulted in higher yield by conducting several extractions (1078.8±12.5 mg/100 g DW). The kinetic studies revealed good stability of anthocyanins at 50 °C, while constant degradation at 80 °C. The rate constant k at 80 °C and pH 3.5 was 1.7 10–3 min–1 and the half-life time t1/2 was 6.7 h. Thermal analysis evidenced heat-induced changes in particular for extracts undergoing pre-heating. These results are valuable for optimal processing conditions of...

Plastic waste disposal affects the environment, since they are not easily recycled and, during the recycling process, they can produce waste ash, heavy metals, or potentially harmful gas emissions. In the plant design for plastic converting into fuel, the chemical reactor is one of the advanced equipment in the field of chemical and process engineering. This study emphasizes the feasibility of pyrolysis process for valorisation plastics by producing energy-efficient products. In this respect, samples of polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene were used as models and subjected to pyrolysis processes at 450 C, in the presence of two types of mesoporous silica materials, MCM-41 and SBA-15, using a modern developed reactor. The use of mesoporous materials increased the calorific value of the obtained oil and gas, thus improving the economic potential of the process end ...

In this respect, four polymers (low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, propylene and polystyrene) were used in the pyrolysis process. The experiments were carried out by using an in-house plant, which allowed a maximum test temperature of 450 C. The product oil and the derived gas from the pyrolysis process were evaluated using different techniques, such as elemental analysis (EA), calorimetry, gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Furthermore, for a comparative study two catalysts, zeolite and lignite, were also used for the pyrolysis process, in order to observe their influences on the final products. The higher heating value obtained for the oil was in the 40.17-45.35 MJ/kg range, acceptable for the use of these oil as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. Also, the sulphur content from th...

This is supported by their content of phytochemicals which provide a variety of pharmacological properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the content of antioxidant compounds with polyphenolic structure from seven different red cabbage samples, as well as their antioxidant and antihaemolytic activity. The mean values of total anthocyanins and flavonoids of the investigated ethanolic and acidified ethanolic extracts were 1228.81 mg 100g-1 DM and 2402.27 mg quercetin 100g-1 DM, respectively. The results indicate a positive correlation of anthocyanins with flavonoids. We report strong antioxidant activity of the crude extracts as measured by relevant assays such as Folin-Ciocalteu and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Good positive correlations were found between FRAP and flavonoids, and between phenolics and anthocyanins, respectively. We also describe the cytoprotective effects of the ethanolic crude extracts against free-radical induced oxidative damage in erythrocytes. The present study demonstrates the high content and activity of antioxidant compounds in red cabbages from different geographic regions. In addition, it provides the first scientific evidence for a protective role against cytotoxic effects of reactive oxygen species in erythrocytes linked to different sample sources.

Extraction with 80% aqueous ethanol leads to an increased anthocyanin yield. The level of phenolics and anthocyanins in bulbs is highly variable and was found higher in the Red of Turda cultivar. The highest value of 99.66 mg/100 g FM was obtained for red onion dry skins. Strong acidic conditions favoured the better stability of anthocyanin extracts during 10-day storage. The first order rate constant value of anthocyanin degradation during storage calculated at different pH increased almost 17 times when pH increased from 1.0 to 9.0. Results of thermal analysis performed by differential scanning calorimetry showed that temperatures over 45°C already induced anthocyanin degradation in extracts. These results may become useful for establishing the appropriate conditions of processing and storage of anthocyanin-based foods. The obtain...

In addition to the unlabeled peptide, we gained in-depth information from the study of two labeled analogs, characterized by one or two residues of the helicogenic, nitroxyl radical-containing TOAC. All three compounds were prepared using the SPPS methodology, which was carefully modified in the course of the syntheses of TOAC-labeled analogs in view of the poorly reactive α-amino function of this very bulky residue and the specific requirements of its free-radical side chain. Despite its potentially high flexibility, our results point to a predominant, partly amphiphilic, α-helical conformation for this peptaibiotic. Therefore, not surprisingly, we found an effective membrane affinity and a remarkable penetration propensity. However, chalciporin A exhibits a selectivity in its antibacterial activity not in agreement with that typical of the other members of this peptide class.

In the present paper we emphasized on the importance of occupational risk assessment in exposed workers from a significant bakery unit of Sibiu. Quantitative determination of risk factors showed high values for temperature (28.7°C) and flour dust (2.32 mg/m 3) in the workplace atmosphere. The physical overstressing on locomotion consists in reiterative movements and orthostatic preponderant work, while the three shifts/day working time represents the peculiarity in this industrial sector. We conclude that these employees (bakers, pastry workers) are exposed to significant occupational risks. There is limited data in national statistics of a certain occupational or occupation related pathology in this field.
