The research aimed to examine the feasibility of designing products with living organisms in the Amazon Forest context and to identify the necessary knowledge to accomplish such designs. For centuries, local artisans have transformed the fruits of Crescentia cujete into cuias-versatile and biodegradable recipients that hold significant cultural importance for local communities. The design experiment employed biofabrication, a biodesign technique involving collaboration with living organisms, to shape the tree fruits during their growth phase. The study started with a comprehensive literature review in Biodesign, Biology, and Anthropology. A mixed method approach followed, combining historical research on the production process of cuias, direct interaction with trees in a bioeconomy context, participatory observation of traditional artisans, and their integration. The historical records revealed that biofabrication with cuieiras is an ancient practice, establishing a connection between biodesign and indigenous knowledge. The experiments with the tree fruits contribute to understanding plant-human collaboration in nature, distinct from laboratory settings typical in biodesign. The designers' engagement with the trees fostered an intimate alliance that facilitated the design process, and form-giving involved a dialogue that acknowledges the dependence of form on ecological considerations. The discussion highlights the underappreciation of indigenous objects and techniques in design, the recognition of non-human agents in design, and the disparity between industrialized systems versus designing with living organisms.

Therefore, biodesign leans on knowledge acquired from other fields, especially sciences. A direct interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and designers happens very often in biodesign. This paper describes the findings of interviews exploring how biodesigners collaborate with scientists in their activities. The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with ten experienced biodesigners from Europe and South America. After collected, the information of the different interviewees was synthetized and compared, and a thematic analysis was made. The paper identifies and reflects on the designers’ methods to collaboration. It also shows the impact of such partnerships, their relevance to the design field and the specific contribution design brings to science. In addition to the expected impact of science in the desig...

These designs exclude certain groups, notably the homeless, but affect the whole population. Although generally considered ugly, fences, walls, grids and other barriers are nowadays being incorporated as part of the identity of many contemporary cities. The scale and intensity of this practice is what not only makes São Paulo aesthetically repulsive, but also contributes to a retraction of its public life, repressing possibilities of coexistence.
This thesis looks into the perception of the city through its physical symbols of segregation and control, especially in the public space. It does so by looking for the reasons why these designs exist, what São Paulo communicates through them and the effects they generate.
The design proposes the disclosing of the barriers: at the same time that their meaning is revealed, the opportunity to use urban areas or elements is re-established. This returns the public space to the people and provokes a reaction, making them aware of the segregation and the outcomes of its physical manifestations.

– as designs themselves. Observing that conceptual design objects are
always accompanied by stories, this thesis investigates how the story
mediates between designer, object and viewer.
After a vast background research was made into contemporary designs
and their stories, the topic was explored through text analyses, a survey
and a workshop. Further examined was how the writing of our thesis
(the “story”) intervened in the making and in the appreciation of our
objects.
The relevance of this thesis lies in the fact that, by bringing to light unspoken
conventions such as of using the idea of authenticity as a means
to give value objects, it offers new perspectives in the relationship between
objects and stories.

This experimental proposal had the following goals:

– register and spread design objetcs that are representative of the material culture associated to the reality of the brazilian Amazon Forest, in sustainable ways. Point on these daily sustainable objects their conceptual, cultural and aesthetical values.

– enable local designers and artists to observe objects under a conceptual point of view and to approach the Amazon Forest with a new mindset.
