The discrimination they experience varies based on the continent of origin, with the population of African origin expressing the highest levels of discrimination. Other important variables that correlate with origin are race, religion, and social class. The population that identifies as Arab or black/African, the Muslim population, and lower-class individuals are those who report the highest rates of discrimination

In turn, migratory movements have effects on the economy in terms of economic growth in general, but also in the different markets (work, housing, consumer goods, etc.) and public services (education, health, social services, etc.). The purpose of this document is to offer an overview of these interactions between migration and the economy in the case of the Canary Islands. To do this, certain conceptual clarifications will be made initially involving the mutual determination of both processes, before later providing specifics with evidence on the Canarian case for the main issues considered: the economic reasons for migration, and its impact on economic growth, the labour market and the living conditions of the immigrant population. The final section alludes to the importance of the institutional framework that regulates these relations between migration and ...

It also exhibits many similarities with the permanent manifestation of this influx, even though the scant planning and weak response initially implemented in an effort to comprehensively manage this migration has placed the phenomenon at the forefront of the current affairs and debate in the region. As a result, a social context of enormous uncertainty due to the health and economic crisis, the direct and almost real-time knowledge of the outcome of many crossings thanks to social media, together with the confusion sown by how this mobility is being managed, all raise the need to reconsider its analysis in order to ascertain ...
The social perceptions of immigration and the attitudes that Tenerife society has towards immigra... more The social perceptions of immigration and the attitudes that Tenerife society has towards immigrants are essential aspects of the dynamics of intercultural coexistence. The Tenerife Immigration Observatory has conducted research that has shows that in general terms the society in Tenerife has a positive perception of immigration, although there is a generalized perception of comparative grievance, based on the idea that migrants are treated more favourably by public institutions

The small size of the islands, in geographic, demographic and economic terms, poses a unique challenge to managing the arrival of migrants, specifically if we consider the relative unpredictability of the phenomenon. This makes it necessary to consider certain key elements in order to understand how irregular maritime migrations toward the Canary Islands have evolved in the past decade.

In a context in which xenophobic parties have alarmingly increased their support base and where rumors and false or biased news are skewing the public debate on migration, it is particularly urgent and important that civil society, institutions and the media have substantiated and verifiable information. Promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge on migratory phenomena is one of the main purposes of the Tenerife Immigration Observatory.

Each seasonal variation is modelled by using an evolving spline function in such a way that a seasonal effect at a proportion of the seasonal period is defined as a non-fixed parametric formulation of this proportion. Subsequently, the areas under the splines are proposed as a useful tool to measure the changes in the magnitude of seasonal variations over time, and to compare the relevance of seasonal variations with different seasonal periods. Furthermore, two indexes are suggested to compare seasonal variations with the same seasonal period in different time series: a dissimilarity index accounts for the area between the splines corresponding to the seasonal variation for each series, whereas a complementarity index accounts for this area when seasonal effects have opposite signs. The proposal is illustrated by applying it to hourly series of energy demand in Canary Islands.
