This research statement complements the podcast with the same title and is construed as a steppin... more This research statement complements the podcast with the same title and is construed as a stepping stone towards a sustainable support model for practice based researchers, supervisors and examiners within the FilmEU alliance and, most importantly, beyond it, opening up the debate on the opportunities and challenges facing the topic. For this task, four relevant players from the artistic research arena were interviewed: Till Ansgar Baumhauer, Nico Carpentier, Michelle Teran and Florian Cramer. FilmEU includes Lusófona University, Portugal, Baltic Film and Media School, Estonia, LUCA, Belgium, and IADT, Ireland. In order to create a model with long-term impact for practice and artistic-based research, the alliance is pursuing a common and transdisciplinary research culture on artistic research within the field of Film and Media Arts. The film and audiovisual sectors play a crucial role in the European societies, and by extension,... more The film and audiovisual sectors play a crucial role in the European societies, and by extension, also in Portugal. This paper proposes a conceptual change centered on mapping the film and audiovisual (AV) industries in Portugal as a creative sector instead of a cultural one. We argue that this approach enables a more rigorous measurement of the value of these industries in the creative economy, besides allowing for more accessible connections between the creative industries and other areas. This conceptual change is based on an innovative approach to the “creative trident.” We argue that the value of the film and AV sector must be rooted in a flourishing creative workforce, and we propose that entrepreneurship education can be a path forward in unlocking the sector’s tremendous creative potential. We suggest an innovative research agenda to link all these elements in the context of the audiovisual and film creative industries.

The core idea of (the original formulation) of stakeholder theory is that business is (and should be) expected to serve society in ways that goes beyond economic objectives. If this is true for commercially oriented companies, the more it is for those organizations, such as universities, that pursue the common public good. This paper discusses the results of a large survey conducted in 2006 on the perception Portuguese... more This paper discusses the results of a large survey conducted in 2006 on the perception Portuguese movies' audiences have of their own locally produced films. Audience's reception of locally produced films is marked by the rejection of the consumption of these objects as a result of a bias against locally produced cultural artefacts. The prejudice shaping this relationship, not only demands for new cultural and social politics, but also raises a number of questions on local and European media industry's ability to cope with its own audiences' expectations. Finally, broader considerations are made on the different ways contemporary audiences are shaping media technologies, and their respective cultural artefacts, through their own use and reception of those technologies and artefacts.

Considera-se que o espaço mágico imposto pelo tabuleiro de jogo é mais do que um espaço de confusão entre real e artificial mas antes se apresenta como uma cortina ou interface entre o corpo próprio do participante e a simulação digital inerente ao sistema computacional.

Foi realizado um estudo experimental, exploratório, com componentes descritivo-qualitativos e quantitativos em grupos de pacientes diabéticos (um grupo controle, outro que testou o aplicativo em Smartphone e outro que o testou em TV digital) de vários níveis socioeconômicos na cidade de Poços de Caldas, MG. Verificou-se a tendência de melhora dos indicadores de alfabetização, principalmente entre os que testaram o conteúdo na TV digital, observou-se que o nível mais alto de alfabetização ajuda na recepção da informação, e que os meios digitais ajudam a melhorar os níveis de alfabetização em saúde.

Se realizó un estudio experimental, exploratorio con componentes descriptivo-cualitativo y cuantitativo en grupos de pacientes diabéticos (un grupo control, otro que probó la aplicación en Smartphone y otro que probó en TV digital) de diversos niveles socioeconómicos en la ciudad de Poços de Caldas, MG. Hubo una tendencia de mejora en los indicadores de alfabetización, especialmente entre quienes probaron contenidos en TV digital, se observó que el mayor nivel de alfabetización ayuda en la recepción de la información, y que los medios digitales ayudan a mejorar los niveles de alfabetización en salud.

The paper presents an empirical approach based on the study of two local communities and analyses whether interactive social technologies are capable of allowing a greater social involvement and a higher production of social capital, social participation and sense of belonging, encouraging original forms of interaction and social cohesion within communities. In the field of disability, this potential is still immersed in a set of barriers and hindrances, arising from the lack of accessibility of this medium and the lack of representation of voices in research and development processes. This problem seems to be exponentiated in the field of Intellectual Disability (ID). The present study describes insights from a case study developed with 14 institutionalized adults with severe ID, with two complementary aims: (a) explore the effectiveness of a PAR gaming approach in the empowerment and well-being of adults with ID living in an institutional setting; and (b) explore the feasibility of promoting accessibility in games through PAR. Nowadays, the potential of games to promote well-being and social inclusion is already widely doc... more Nowadays, the potential of games to promote well-being and social inclusion is already widely documented by research. Yet, how this potential can reach out to underrepresented communities, namely those with very specific accessibility needs, ensuring their participation is still somewhat unexplored. The present article discusses accessibility, participation, and inclusion as three pillars to address the relationship between gaming and Intellectual Disability (ID). Through this approach, more participatory models of game development and research are proposed, including the operationalization of the social model of disability and the relevance of the context. Therefore, it proposes concrete models, where accessibility is part of the creative process, to better include the voice of the player with ID into gameplay, and ensure a final media object that, more than accessible, narratively represents the experience of having this disability.

In the field of disability, this potential is still immersed in a set of barriers and hindrances, arising from the lack of accessibility of this medium and the lack of representation of voices in research and development processes. This problem seems to be exponentiated in the field of Intellectual Disability (ID). Nowadays, the potential of games to promote well-being and social inclusion is already widely doc... more Nowadays, the potential of games to promote well-being and social inclusion is already widely documented by research. Yet, how this potential can reach out to underrepresented communities, namely those with very specific accessibility needs, ensuring their participation is still somewhat unexplored. The present article discusses accessibility, participation, and inclusion as three pillars to address the relationship between gaming and Intellectual Disability (ID). Through this approach, more participatory models of game development and research are proposed, including the operationalization of the social model of disability and the relevance of the context. Therefore, it proposes concrete models, where accessibility is part of the creative process, to better include the voice of the player with ID into gameplay, and ensure a final media object that, more than accessible, narratively represents the experience of having this disability.
