The middle and top leaders are very important to identify and develop new leaders within the organization. The authors reach three main conclusions: 1) The laissez-faire leadership style is related to the succession planning. Succession planning is positively influenced by leaders that adopt a passive leadership style. 2) There are some practices of leadership development that are related to the existence of succession planning in organizations. 3) The 360º feedback and coaching/executive coaching are related to the succession planning. These practices promote the human capital development, so it is assumed that succession planning may be related to the leader development. Theoretically they concluded that organizations should have a leadership pipeline in order to prepare leaders to assume leadership positi...

Design/methodology/approach The methodology used was qualitative, based partially on an integrative literature review (Torraco 2016). This paper aims to review, update and criticize the literature related to the competences approach in the organizational context and, on the other hand, to review, criticize and synthesize the literature, namely, the models and competences. Findings Difficulties in choosing and implementing a leader competency model led to the integration of competencies in a single model, seeking to simplify the choice and implementation process in organizations. The integrative model of leader competences arises from the literature review, more specifically from the analysis of the different approaches found. This model is grouped into four dimensions – intellectual competences, management competences, social competences and emotional competences. This research is a contribution to reduce the fragmentation of leadership and management theories and facilitates the choice and implementation of a leader competence model suited to the organization’s needs, contributing to the leadership effectiveness. Originality/value The integrative model of the leader competences allows the choice and implementation of a competence model with a wide range of competences considered as essential in the organizational context by several researchers. This model simplifies the process of identifying the competences that need to be developed, feeding the human resources development process within the organization.

The positive psychology approach warns of the importance of strengthening the forces. Leveraging the strengths is a way to achieve better results and even minimize the weaknesses of the leader. It is this assumption that positive psychology adds to the human resource development, which includes the leadership development. This chapter aims to propose a theoretical model about positive leader development supported by the positive psychology approach. This model comes from the literature to the evolution of leadership and organizational theories and the positive psychology. Positive leader development model seeks to enhance leadership development within an organization with a positive psychology approach. The literature shows the advantages of strengthening forces in the organizational context. So, it is necessary to systematize a theoretical model that facilitates the positive leader development in organizations....

The dimensions considered in the investigation are divided into three groups which are: i) Type of Organization (TO)-formed by the variables related to the characterization of the organization, ii) the profile of the leader (PFL)-consists of the variables related to the characterization of the leader, and iii) the leadership style perceived by the Leader (EL)-includes the variables of transformational leadership model of Bass and Avolio and used in the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), including the transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership. The existence of practices of leadership development is associated to the dimension of organizations, their level of importance, the existence of leaders succession planning and the use of coaching as a process to equip people with knowledge and tools to self develop and to become more effective. Leaders who promote the practice of leadership development prefer leaders that come from within the organization. The leadership style perceived by the leaders that promotes leadership development practices is the transformational leadership style.

We try to inspect if at the macro political level KM is made, and how. The research is interesting because given that we live in a Knowledge society, in the Information Era, it is more or less obvious that the political leaders should also do KM. However we don't know of any previous study on KM and world leaders and this paper wants to be a first step to fill that gap. As a methodology we use literature review: given this one is a first preliminary study we use data we found in the internet and other databases like EBSCO. We divide the analysis in two main parts: theoretical ideas first, and an application second. The second part is itself divided in two segments: the past and the present times. We find that rather not surprisingly, KM always was and is pervasive in the activity of the world leaders, and has become more and more diverse has power itself became to be more and more disseminated in the world. The study has the limitation of relying on insights and texts and not on interviews. But we believe it is very interesting to make this kind of analysis and such studies may help improving the democracies in the world.

Leaders and followers perceive that the predominant style is the Transformational Leadership. In order to understand the types of competences to be developed by leaders to enhance the different leadership styles, it appears that emotional competencies related to Relationship Management are those that have a linear relationship with transformational leadership. The Relationship Management is the ability to deal with the emotions of others and is composed of social competences, including Inspiration, Influence, Develop others and Change catalyst. According to both perspectives, these competences are also the least practiced by leaders in organizations.
