José Miguel Martínez-Carrión, PhD in History (Universidad de Murcia), Professor of Economic History at Universidad de Murcia, Murcia (Spain).

He served as Secretary-General elect of the Spanish Association of Economic History (AEHE) and as Editor Vocal of the Spanish Society of Agrarian History (SEHA). He belonged to the Executive Committee of Historical Demography Association (ADEH).

He is currently an Editorial Board member of Revista de Historia Industrial, Revista de Demografía Histórica and América Latina en la Historia Económica (ALHE) and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Historia Agraria and Investigaciones de Historia Económica-Economic History Research. He is a former editor of Historia Agraria/ Journal of the Spanish Society of Agrarian History (SEHA).

His main research interests focus on the social and economic history of the modern world. He started his first investigations in the field of historical demography. In particular, he analyzed the epidemiological transition and the demographic transition, changes in mortality patterns and family organization of peasant societies. His doctoral thesis focused more specifically on agrarian history; he analyzed changes in land ownership, land use, production and utilization of water resources, and explored the processes of specialization, intensification and diversification of agricultural economies Mediterranean. In recent years, he research on the processes of industrialization and addresses aspects of business history, particularly he analyzes the development of the Spanish food industry, and the international scope of entrepreneurial firms in the globalization process. The studies on the competitiveness of the Spanish wine industry in the world market and, in particular, of the Jumilla wineries stand out. Both are sponsored by the Seneca Foundation (Regional Government of CARM) and the DO Jumilla, respectively.

His cutting-edge research is focuses on the new anthropometric history. This field of research studies human welfare changes and the complex interactions that exist between nutrition, health, and economic growth. His studies on the human stature explore the nutritional transition and the impact of socio-economic processes in living standards, health, and biological welfare in the last three centuries.

Inequality and poverty through biological indicators and variations in height socioeconomic and environmental factors are the centerpieces of his current research. His research are being funded by National Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation Plan (National R&D&i Plan, MINECO, Government of Spain) and the Seneca Foundation (CARM Regional Government).
