Our research confirmed the indications of recent neurolinguistic research that foreign language teaching (FLT) must be based on enabling pupils to develop their linguistic abilities through participation in authentic, real life communication situations, or at least situations resembling real life. It also confirmed the fact that thanks to pre-training in neurolinguistics, teachers were able to effectively replace memorization and drilling with meaningful active learning methods and personalized activities. Personalization played an important role in building relationships and also had a significant impact on pupils' motivation and desire to talk, which in turn contributed to the improving pupils' speaking skills. Frequent repetition, which is important for storing information in long-term memory, was also evaluated positively. Good and friendly relationships, a good atmosphere in classes, a sense of security and a positive attitude of pupils towards the English language are also of great benefit to their language and communicative capabilities.

ICERI proceedings, Oct 31, 2023

For early childhood educators, an understanding of attachment theories is considered very importa... more For early childhood educators, an understanding of attachment theories is considered very important because children's relationship with parents or other caregivers greatly influences the overall later development of the child's personality. Several types of research confirm that a quality relational bond between children and their caregivers has a significant impact on a child's language development [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. Although genetics plays a significant role in the development of speech, several studies have confirmed the influence of the social environment and peer relationships on the further development of children and subsequently on their language learning. Attachment has been shown to have a significant ability to influence brain plasticity for language. Vocabulary diversity and parents' speech have been confirmed as strong predictors of children's later language and literacy development. In this context, attachment is one of the main determinants of children's vocabulary acquisition and is also our main variable. The aim of this review study is therefore to analyse studies on attachment theories and to determine how and to what extent these theories and constructs relate to children's early language development and later how they pave the way for early childhood education. We will focus on the verbally responsive interaction style, which the educator must consider as one of the basic manifestations of children's interaction.

First, they analyse the reform documents in terms of social competence development as one of the RE content requirements. Second, they seek a teaching methodology that applies a balanced approach to the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) while protecting RE pupils and their building of healthy human relationships from the potential threat of digital addiction. The authors based their teaching ideas on the findings from their research. To
explore the relationship between addictive Internet behaviour and social intelligence, they used a questionnaire including the Internet Addiction Test and the TSIS Scale. The Mann–Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. Data on 386 adolescent respondents revealed a statistically significant difference between males and females in social awareness, with males performing significantly better. A weak positive relationship (ρ = 0.240) was identified between social awareness and addictive Internet behaviour. In the discussion, the authors suggest teaching methods for developing social competence via RE without resisting the opportunities provided by ICT, while also avoiding an
increase in the risk of online social media addiction. They suggest that even denominational RE should prioritize cultivating healthy relationships not only with God but also relationships with other people, the outside world, and oneself.

As the analysis of the theoretical and research studies shows, it is evident that Service Learning and Global Education overlap in their learning outcomes and they both possess potential to contribute to the university internationalisation. The question is what the aims of internationalisation are in Slovak context (at the micro university level) and if they include greater understanding of a local context and diversity, as the courses are predominantly offered in English and via other foreign languages (depending on the current human resources situation) at the University. The authors present results from the first preparatory phase of a wider research-pedagogical project "Plurilingual and Intercultural Edulab Supporting University Strategy of Internationalization" (KEGA 004UMB-4/2019) at Matej Bel University in Slovakia. Its aim is to create a long-term sustainable model for the effective development of plurilingual, intercultural and global competencies of university students as well as teachers. The authors share with some specific ways how university courses using Service Learning may lead to development of these skills and to incorporate intercultural and multilingual dimension.

This process can be considered the first step toward successful learning of foreign languages. In the first part of the study the theoretical base of this issue is described, especially the notion of language intake as well as the broader concept of learnercentred language pedagogy. Various theories designate various factors as important in the process of language intake. The two sets of research data collected via observation of an experimental implementation of a new ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course show the most important factors influencing the successful process of language intake. In the end of the study, the author presents a list of cognitive, affective, cognitive and physical variables that were found while observing the learners during their learning (such as the learner's pre-knowledge and linguistic repertoire, motivation, emotional barriers, and rapport with the teachers, as well as adequate teaching form and positive climate).

They may be attended by both university students or secondary school students. The basic idea of such a course, in our case called "Global Encounters in Local Settings", is giving students space to create a service-learning project for a community. Students have to work in linguistically and ethnically mixed groups. Each group decides to about the focus of their project and the procedures of its implementation. Via these cooperative projects accomplished while using various foreign languages-suitable also for online learning space, the students can develop various transversal competencies, such as critical and reflective thinking, plurilingual and intercultural competence, problem-solving, teamwork skills, interpersonal and other social competencies, willingness to take risks and seek challenges, leadership development skills, time management and planning skills, inclusive approach, and active citizenship. The first version of such course was tested on several groups of university students in Slovakia (in 2020). The post-tests and reflections after accomplishing this course showed evident growth in the above-mentioned competencies.

Due to their developmental cognitive and moral immaturity, decisions about the intensity of their use of ICT lies on the shoulders of their educators who have grown up in a different, pre-globalized world. These adults are often not aware of their insufficiently substantiated approach to their use of ICT in teaching. To become sufficiently informed requires considering various viewpoints, ranging on a continuum from techno-sceptic to techno-utopian. Responsible decisions about the ethical use of ICT can be reached only after considering the issues of the power of ICT as well as the need of coherent research of young learners' needs and teachers' capabilities. The authors share the results of research in various countries. They propose some solutions to this ethical problem, ones they consider suited to reflexive education.

Our assumption is that the university has the potential to provide all its students – not just those in linguistic study programs – with a stimulating learning environment that develops their multilingualism. This chapter presents some qualitative results of one phase of a wider project aimed at raising the internationalization level of university education, namely the implementation of a new course Global Encounters in Local Settings in which the students develop their multilingual competence through genuine, meaningful communication with their foreign counterparts. The course is based on authentic tasks integrating the content of different fields of study with learning languages as well as several academic or transferable skills. After the teacher’s introductory instruction, the ethnically mixed teams of students collaborate on creating real-life mini-projects, using a service-learning strategy, focused on fulfilling a selected community need. During the implementation phase, students write reflective diaries about their learning. At the end of the term, they report on the results before the whole class. A qualitative examination of the course’s effectiveness via a quasi-experiment during both terms in 2020 showed that students’ multilingual competence was enhanced. Another positive result was the breakdown of the previous isolation of foreign students from domestic ones thanks to these mutual activities.

It stresses particularly the need and the teaching methods of the plurilingual preparation of students through which the student acquire new knowledge of simultaneously more new languages based on the existing language competences. The first part of the study characterizes current approaches to plurilingual courses as well as the specific needs of the age category of young adults learning languages. The author presents several teaching methods that support the effectivity of modern plurilingual instruction, aimed at multiple targets (at language skills, higher cognitive skills and acquiring knowledge of specialized content). The last section provides an overview of some results from the longitudinal research (in several phases from year 2000 to year 2015) of courses implementing the listed aims and teaching methods.

It is clear that future teachers will increasingly be expected to have a wider range of professional teaching skills, but also transversal skills and competences. For this purpose, a Slovak research team at Matej Bel University prepared an experiment by transforming a traditional foreign language CLIL course into a new course Global Encounters in Local Settings, aimed at developing not only pre-service teachers’ multilingual and intercultural competences, but also a variety of other transversal skills and competences (critical thinking, intercultural competence, time management, teamwork, plurilingual and interpersonal communication skills and others). The innovative components in the new course are student-centredness, service learning and the collaboration between domestic and foreign students. GELS pilot teaching was launched in February 2020 and has been repeated during four following semesters (up to December 2021), despite severe pandemic constraints. The author presents some results from the verification of this pedagogical innovation in the teachers’ university training curriculum. It has been tested by three quantitative-qualitative research methods: pre-term and post-term questionnaires, content analysis of students’ seminar work, reflective individual diaries and group reports. Although the results from all of them are briefly stated, this focused on the results from the last mentioned analysis – diaries and group reports. The results of the data analysis show that this innovation has proved to be feasible and effective in achieving an increase in students’ transversal skills, especially project management skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, ICT skills, time and project management, tolerance and flexibility, critical and reflective thinking skills and open-mindedness.

At the same time, the process of reflection is presented as a prerequisite for the innovative teaching and learning strategies used in the process of transversal competence
development. The main intention of this volume is to show why it is important for the current higher education institutions to pay more intensive attention to equipping their students with transversal
competences. By mastering transversal competences, we do not simply mean skills training. The ambition of this book is incomparably greater than to offer some methodological how-to training or know-how practical advice leading to forming some isolated competences. The book also aims to address the following questions:
1. Which transversal competences reflect the current era of digitalization and innovation?
2. What is the interconnectivity between the development of critical and reflective thinking skills and transversal competences?
3. How can transversal competences be fostered in the higher education environment?

existential prerequisite for the further sustainability and
competitiveness of any university. The degree of internationalization of the university is reflected not only in the top-down emphasis on well-thought-out internationalization strategies but equally in the bottom-up activation of individual teachers and teams. So far, this area appears to be
underdeveloped. Our publication tries to bridge this gap. This handbook is intended for teachers involved in the teaching
of courses in foreign languages or in the teaching of culturally or
ethnically mixed groups of students. This handbook could help
teachers increase their professional competencies by focusing on the
salient issues of the international teaching environment. In other
words, it has an ambition to help university teachers to incorporate
an intercultural dimension into their teaching.

For her comparison of research on teachers in several central European as well as Western countries, the author used a three-dimensional analysis of research into the teaching profession, based on three conceptual themes: chronology of research studies and their categorization in terms of topics and methodology. “The diachronic view enabled the author to capture the changes and trends in teacher research at two key stages. The problematic pre-democracy period is described very objectively and correctly in the cultural-historical and political context of such conditions, in which the pedeutologic research was carried out. The author has managed to capture the key historical moments and especially their political and ideological context that severely interfered with the concept and results of pedeutologic research and determined its direction and published outputs. Socio-political transformation after 1989 not only affected the educational system and education reality, but created new challenges and opportunities for research on the teaching profession.” (A. Seberová, reviewer) “The author presents the findings and analysis of how the research on teachers developed, not only its themes and methods, but particularly major changes in pedeutological thinking and independency of research.” (B. Kasáčová, reviewer)

At first it lists various concepts used for the idea of integrated teaching of content and languages and the theories upon which CLIL was built. Then it presents information about the earliest developments in CLIL, showing examples of how some initiative teachers started to teach content directly in a foreign language (bilingual/immersion programmes) and, later on, how the current form of CLIL developed. The recent history of CLIL is presented via brief data on some countries as well as via activities on European level

It was formed during the four
years of cooperation under the APVV-0026-07 project title The Profession of Preprimary Teacher and Primary Teacher within a Dynamic Concept. The aim was to concentrate the theoretical knowledge about the profession and empirically examine the profession with a focus on the professional activities characterizing and fulfilling the concept of the term "profession". The research aim was to: examine the aspects that are not obvious to the eyes of the expert, nor the lay public. To identify and analyze what the teachers do behind the closed doors of their classrooms, workrooms, or at home during their off-school hours. What makes this project so valuable is the fact that the research process, the creation of the research tool, as well as the processing of the results were done in an international cooperation. The authors tried to identify, what the professions have internationally in common, as well as to find the difference points of these two professions, and how do the national specifics manifest.
