Nowadays, phytotherapy offers viable solutions in managing respiratory infections, disorders known for considerable incidence in both children and adults. In a context in which more and more people are turning to phytotherapy, finding new remedies is a topical goal of researchers in health and related fields. This paper aims to identify those traditional medicinal plants that show potentially antibacterial effects against four Gram-negative germs (Chlamydia pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Moraxella catarrhalis), which are considered to have high involvement in respiratory infections. Furthermore, a comparison with Romanian folk medicines was performed. Methods. An extensive review of books and databases was undertaken to identify vegetal species of interest in the context of the topic. Results. Some traditional Romanian species (such as Mentha × piperita, Thymus vulgaris, Pinus sylvestris, Allium sativum, Allium cepa, Ocimum basilicum, and ...

Therefore we performed an assessment of the most used parabens (methyl - and n-propylparaben) investigating their estrogenic burden. Systemic exposure dose via cosmetics was estimated using two approaches: ConsExpo modeling and bio-monitoring data. The endocrine-disrupting effects (uterotrophic assay) were selected as the paraben’s critical endpoints and using the assumption of the dose addition for combined effects of parabens, due to their toxicological similarity to estradiol, exposure was calculated in terms of estradiol and compared with the physiological ranges. Rezumat Parabenii sunt larg utilizaţi cu rol de conservaţi in produsele de ingrijire personală, dar actuala legislaţie in domeniul produselor cosmetice (Directiva 76/768/EEC) nu are in vedere si potenţialele lor ...

Research paper thumbnail of Phytotoxicity of Inorganic Arsenic Assessed by Triticum Test

Results confirmed that arsenite was more toxic than arsenate, as it inhibited the rootgrowth of germinated wheat seeds at a lower concentration. The arsenic species uptake in germinatedparts of the wheat grains was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The obtaineddata confirmed that the metabolism of arsenic species in the plant root have different mechanisms forAs(III) compared to As(V), as the curves of the growth inhibition versus exposure show different patterns. Keywords: inorganic arsenic, Triticum assay, phytotoxicity, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Particular efforts were made to find the best system of solvents for liquid-liquid extraction. nhexane/ izoamyl alcohol (97:3 v/v) proved to be suitable for the extraction of fluoxetine from biological samples, comparing to n-hexane, chloroform or ethyl acetate. Good extraction yields were obtained from human urine and bovine serum. The spectrophotometric method was validated through all necessary parameters, according to ICH guidelines. The absorbance intensity vs. concentration plot was linear over the range 40-400 μg/mL fluoxetine, with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The detection limit was found to be 0.07 μg/mL and the quantitation limit was of 0.23 μg/mL. The method is suitable to measure fluoxetine in biological samples, and can successfully be used to monitorize therapeutic levels of fluoxetine.

Optimum detection of venlafaxine was obtained on a 56 cm (effective length) x 50 μm capillary, using a nonaqueous electrolyte solution system consisting of 7:3 methanol-acetonitrile with 15mM ammonium acetate, capillary temperature 25 0 C and hydrodynamic injection, detection at 230 nm. The method is simple, accurate and reproducible and was successfully applied for the assay of toxic levels of venlafaxine in biological samples (human serum). Rezumat Lucrarea prezintă dezvoltarea si validarea unei metode rapide si sensibile de dozare a venlafaxinei folosind tehnica electroforezei capilare neapoase (NACE).

Research paper thumbnail of Metabolic and Metabolomic Insights Regarding the Omega-3 PUFAs Intake in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Dietary factors, including omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs), were reported to influence T1DM. Therefore, a better understanding of the potential role of ω-3 PUFAs in the development and progression of T1DM will help to improve the clinical management of the disease. In this review, we explored the current understanding of molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways induced by ω-3 PUFAs and the beneficial effects of ω-3 PUFAs intake in the prevention and treatment of T1DM, as well as the underlying possible metabolomic (lipidomics) changes.

Results on U937 cell suspensions revealed the depolarization of the cell membrane induced by the three antidepressants. The maximal depolarization effect was registered after 15 minutes of cell exposure and was concentration-dependent, in a non-monotonic manner. The effect was also dependent on the tested compound, fluoxetine presenting the strongest depolarizing effect compared to sertraline and venlafaxine. The erythrocyte susceptibility to lipid peroxidation and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were assessed on red blood cells isolated from patients with depressive disorder. Our results revealed that antidepressant treatment induced the antioxidant defense, by decreasing erythrocyte susceptibility to ...

This is often accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation, driven by the activation of various molecular pathways such as STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), IKK (IκB kinase), MMP9 (matrix metallopeptidase 9), MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinases), COX2 (cyclooxigenase 2), and NF-Kβ (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells). Multiple intervention studies have demonstrated that lifestyle changes can lead to reduced inflammation and improved health. This can be linked to the concept of real-life risk simulation, since humans are continuously exposed to dietary factors in small doses and complex combinations (e.g., polyphenols, fibers, polyunsaturated fatty acids, etc.). Inflammation biomarkers improve in patients who consume a certain a...
