My recent work, "Educational Standards: How to learn from Black Lives Matter and Covid-19 as we reopen schools" resulted in a flurry interesting comment, causing me to question an axiom that I was taught, but to my detriment did not always abide: Did you ever get in trouble for something you chose not to say? For some reason, the comments on the work were addressed to areas that were not mentioned or included in the text. Comments on policy came from friends at the university level, district leaders and principals were concerned about inequities in funding, teachers wanted to talk teacher quality, and everyone wanted a discussion of the value America places on education. So, let us attempt to give voice to several of the important comments.

As a retired educator with over 40 years of experience as teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, consultant, and adjunct college professor, I've been thinking quite a bit about my professional experiences in schools and school systems. The surrounding community is primarily African American and of low socio-economic status. The school had a history of low academic performance and had been identified as being "in need of improvement". The current story is radically different. The presence of the IT Academy and improved instruction on the part of the faculty has resulted in dramatically increased student academic performance. Increases in student learning have propelled the school's ranking and changed the internal culture to one of optimism and high expectations for student achievement and post secondary opportunity. The IT Academy has further contributed to the school's success, generating a stronger sense of community and success.
