Research paper thumbnail of The impact of tailored text messages on health beliefs and medication adherence in adults with diabetes: A randomized pilot study

Research in social & administrative pharmacy : RSAP, Jan 30, 2015

Efforts to improve adherence have resulted in limited effects; approaches leveraging mobile technology have emerged, but their focus has mainly been limited to simple reminder messages. The purpose of this pilot study was to test the effectiveness of tailored text messages focusing on improving medication adherence and health beliefs in adults with diabetes. Adults aged 21-64, with uncontrolled diabetes, and taking at least one anti-diabetic medication were recruited and randomized into 2 study arms: daily tailored text messaging for 90 days or standard care. Comparing baseline and endpoint survey responses, changes in theory-driven health beliefs and attitudes were assessed. The impact on medication adherence was evaluated using pharmacy claims by calculating the percent of days covered (PDC). A total of 75 subjects were consented, and 48 were ran...

Research paper thumbnail of Mobile health monitoring to characterize depression symptom trajectories in primary care

This study examined whether using repeated mobile health assessments to determine symptom trajectories is a potentially useful method for classifying depression severity. 344 primary care patients with depression were identified and recruited as part of a program of mobile health symptom monitoring and self-management support. Depression symptoms were measured weekly via interactive voice response (IVR) calls using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Trajectory analysis of weekly IVR PHQ-9 scores from baseline through week 6 was used to subgroup patients according to similar trajectories. Multivariable linear regression was used to determine whether the trajectories predicted 12-week PHQ-9 scores after adjusting for baseline and 6-week PHQ-9 scores. The optimal trajectory analysis model included 5 non-intersecting trajectories. The subgroups of patients assigned to each trajectory had mean baseline PHQ-9s of ...

An observational study was conducted among 115,538 diabetes patients, aged ≥60, in an integrated health care system with uniform access to care. Compared with Whites, Asians and Filipinos were more likely to be underweight but had substantively lower prevalence of falls, urinary incontinence, polypharmacy, depression, and chronic pain, and were least likely of all groups to have at least one geriatric condition. African Americans had significantly lower prevalence of incontinence and falls, but higher prevalence of dementia; Latinos had a lower prevalence of falls. Except for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), Whites tended to have the highest rates of prevalent diabetic complications. Among these insured older adults, ethnic health patterns varied substantially; differences were frequently small and rates were often ...
