In addition, the visual dimension, often a unifying factor in manuscript compilation, offers a series of text-image anomalies that raise questions about the role of gender in the construction of the codex.

Although feminist scholars have, for some time now, paid increasing attention to the topic of med... more Although feminist scholars have, for some time now, paid increasing attention to the topic of medieval literary production by and for women, lay female patronage of Old French religious translations has received relatively little attention compared with other topics such as women’s book ownership or the reading habits of female religious communities. In an attempt to fill in one small gap in the history of female patronage, this essay examines the manuscript context of two thirteenth-century vernacular religious texts dedicated to two neighbouring Picard ruling countesses: the paraphrase/gloss on the Paternostre dedicated to Ide de Boulogne and the allegory of the redemption known as the Dit des Quatre Sereurs written for the countess of Ponthieu. The two texts share not only the fact of female patronage and geography; they also share a family connection (two brothers, Renaud and Simon de Dammartin, married the two counties’ heiresses) and a codicological relationship, for they both occur in the related compilations Paris, BnF fr. 12467 and Paris, Arsenal 3142. Given the limitations of an essay such as this, I will focus on these two texts in their manuscript contexts, and in particular on Arsenal 3142, as interesting cases of the intersection of female patronage of religious texts and manuscript production in the thirteenth century.

Le manuscrit PARIS, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fonds français 24430 recèle le plus ancien ... more Le manuscrit PARIS, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fonds français 24430 recèle le plus ancien exemplaire conservé des Vraies Cronikes de Tournai -désormais indiquées « les Cronikes » -, version française du 13 e siècle des origines légendaires de la ville 2 . Ce manuscrit est fascinant sous plusieurs égards et dans le contexte qui est le nôtre, il devient encore plus intéressant, car il fut probablement réalisé à Tournai même. Ce manuscrit date en outre des alentours de 1300 ; il est très proche de l'époque de la composition des Cronikes 3 . A la fin des Cronikes, on trouve la date de 1290.

Abordant également la question de la réception des textes médiévaux à la lumière de leur mise en ... more Abordant également la question de la réception des textes médiévaux à la lumière de leur mise en recueil, Kathy Krause s’intéresse à l’insertion d’un texte long, le Roman de la Violette, dans quelques recueils. Son étude démontre que la cohérence de ces manuscrits tient au contexte historique et géographique dans lequel ils ont été composés plutôt qu’à des considérations littéraires et génériques. Ainsi, l’unité du volume relève davantage des motivations personnelles de son commanditaire que de la nature des pièces qu’il contient.

The thirteenth-century Old French prose text known as the Fille du comte de Pontieu recounts a ta... more The thirteenth-century Old French prose text known as the Fille du comte de Pontieu recounts a tale unlike almost any other in Old French literature. The plot includes the heroine’s rape on route to Compostela, her attempted murder of her husband, and her subsequent apostasy after being sold to a Saracen sultan. In addition to recounting an unusual tale, the Fille du comte de Pontieu is one of the earliest examples of vernacular prose narrative, and is often labeled the oldest French prose novella.1 The combination of form and content have assured this short text a notable place in histories of medieval French literature. However, much of the critical attention garnered by the text has not taken into consideration the fact that the Fille du comte de Pontieu exists in two distinct yet nearly contemporaneous versions: one version is an independent text found in only one manuscript; the other occurs as an episode in a Crusade chronicle.
In addition to the question of the chronology of the versions, there is also the related question of the relationship between the Fille and the text that contains the B version, the Estoires d’Outremer. Scholars have never questioned the assumption that the Fille was an independent text inserted into the Crusade chronicle. However, no one has actually examined the texts with an eye to determining, if possible, whether this is in fact the case. An examination of the codicological and stylistic evidence, while affording no definitive answers, does provide several intriguing insights about both the relationship between the two thirteenth-century versions of the Fille du comte de Pontieu and the relationship of the Fille to the Estoires.
