There is universal agreement on the valuable role arts education (and specifically music) plays in the total education of the child. However, this statement appears to have little impact on decision makers when it comes to training primary generalists teachers to have a quality impact on arts/music education. Given that pre-service teachers must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach music in their future classrooms, how then do universities provide the necessary training in undergraduate programs when the time for arts/music training continues to be eroded? With the time made available how does one ensure efficient use of this time? What do students need to equip them to be able to teach music in their classroom? What is the balance needed between theoretical and practical knowledge and skills? This paper reports on data obtained via an email questionnaire to student teachers who had completed their one semester of music education in their first year of training, and had now completed a four-week practicum in schools in their second year of training.

Design/methodology/approach – The authors examined publicly available data for Devens, Massachusetts, and obtained additional data from Devens Enterprise Commission and a survey of 29 local organizations. Findings – Of the 43 indicators adopted by Devens eco-industrial park in 2012, 29 demonstrate progress, seven show lack of progress, six point to a potential progress, and for one no information was available in 2000 to evaluate progress. Most progress has been made in the areas of transportation, business and economic sustainability, governance and natural resources. Research limitations/implications – For some proposed indicators no data were available to evaluate progress (e.g. waste generation, recycling, compositing, and landfill diversion) yet these are among the key measure...

This is what hegemonic monopoly capitalism looks like after decades of neoliberal rule. Ok-that's rhetorical, but it is also accurately descriptive. In this issue, we are publishing a paper that was originally published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health (IJOEH), a journal that had a similar scope and orientation as New Solutions. That is, until its publisher, Taylor & Francis removed the editor, Dr. David Egilman, without notice or consultation with the journal's editorial board. IJOEH regularly published peer-reviewed research papers detailing industry support for manufacturing doubt about science that provides evidence of human and ecological harm caused by our modes of production and consumption. In taking over the IJOEH, Taylor & Francis has chosen to reposition the journal away from its stated mission and scope, and has done so without consultation with the IJOEH editorial board, which has contested all of this. Reposition to what? Obviously, to something that would not provide scientific evidence of corporate harms against humanity. The role of science with its processes such as peer review is not to win political battles. It is to discover and understand dynamics and processes, whether in the natural, social, or medical sciences. Researchers generate and test theories that form foundations for the approaches and designs used in scientific inquiry. We challenge ourselves against drawing foregone conclusions. Research of occupational and environmental exposures and conditions that can harm human health and generate unsustainable living conditions has proven to be quite a nuisance for interests that profit from the substances and conditions that can cause such

ABSTRACT The tobacco control movement has been successful in its efforts to regulate environmenta... more ABSTRACT The tobacco control movement has been successful in its efforts to regulate environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in recent years. Since 1993, 21 states and over 3,000 municipalities have passed clean indoor air laws that prohibit smoking. While the tobacco control movement has enlisted a variety of allies in its policy efforts, including civic organizations, business associations, consumer groups, and the medical community, it has been less successful in forming coalitions with organized labor. As the U.S. economy becomes more service-oriented, tobacco control advocates have an opportunity for greater collaboration with organized labor. Worksite smoking restriction policies have been a difficult issue for unions when the focus is on employee smoking. The dynamics are different when smoke is an occupational hazard generated by customers, as opposed to an on-the-job behavior of fellow union members. Controlling the former fits more neatly into the mission of the union, while the latter can be politically sensitive. The instrumental role of flight attendants in the passage of smoke-free airlines legislation in the late 1980s illustrates the potential for employees and unions to advocate for tobacco control as a workplace health and safety issue. As state/local efforts continue to address ETS, it is useful to look historically at smoking related worksite harms and efforts to control them. This paper utilizes original case study research on labor unions and tobacco control to examine the evolution of ETS as an occupational health issue and identify factors that contribute to labor union involvement in successful smokefree worksite campaigns.

Research paper thumbnail of The Impact of Health and Safety Committees: A Study Based on Survey, Interview, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration Data

At a sample of 13 firms, interviews of HSC members were conducted. Committee attributes and perceptions about committee effectiveness were compared with the number of OSHA complaints and serious citations. There were fewer complaints and fewer serious citations at firms with HSCs that were perceived as effective. Results of the study suggest that the objective attributes of the committee may be less important to its success than the commitment of management and labor to solving workplace safety problems.
