This paper hypothesises that there is a causal relationship between the actors involved in social change and the end product-the progress of democratic transition and whether revolution from below or from above is more likely to bring about the transition. By examining Pacting Theory as a democratic transition theory, this paper will analyse the role of the military in Egypt's democratisation process. The interplay of the military powers and relinquishing those powers to a civilian government will have implications for social movements theory and the approaches to democratic transition theory.

Moran's American Genesis examines the Scopes trial in particular and the antievolution movement in general through the prisms of gender, region, and race. The diversification, of both ideology and strategy, of antievolutionism and the current impact of antievolutionism on scientists in academia are also discussed. Overall, despite a few problems, American Genesis deserves a place on anyone's list of the top 10 books on the Scopes trial and the antievolution impulse in America.

It is in this vein of thought that each contributor explores Islamic contributions to the field, addressing the theories and practices of the Islamic civilization and of Muslim societies with regards to international affairs and to the discipline of IR. The inclusion of Muslim contributions is not meant to create an isolationist, judicious divide between what is Islamic and what is not. Instead, this study supports the inclusion of that knowledge as a building block in the field of IR. An outcome of the Co-IRIS team (International Relations and Islamic Studies Research Cohort), this study draws together the combined expertise of scholars of Islam in international affairs.

If we take culture as an example and more specifically the question of identity and identity politics in the Middle East, we will find that the current modus operandi in political science research is distancing itself from objective knowledge because of the increased focus in the field on quantification. Whether one analyzes the work of Telhami on Identity in the Middle East, or Lynch's "The Arab Uprisings Explained", one will find that they all reflect on the academic conundrum that the field is facing.

However, Western liberal democracies were fearful of the implications of an Islamist political platform. This chapter examines the relationship between church and state in De Tocqueville’s and Rousseau’s writings as authors who shaped the ideology of one of the strongest Western liberal democracies, the United States of America, with a focus on their respective views of the role of religion in public life. Thus the chapter analyzes whether post-enlightenment Western European liberal thought excludes religion from the public arena. The implication of negating this binary divide between church and state is important because it allows room for variation and an indigenous look at democracy and what it means. Questioning the universality of Western liberal democracy and its rigid attachment to Enlightenment ideology and how this relates to Islam and Islamically oriented governments is the focus of the chapter.

It was created by a group of researchers interested in developing and sustaining a body of knowledge that addresses the theories and practices of Muslim civilization and societies with regard to international affairs and the discipline of international relations. IR as a field is not a unilateral project but an intellectual platform. The aim of Co-IRIS is to explore Islamic contributions to the field. The inclusion of Muslim contributions is not meant to create an isolationist, controversial divide between what is Islamic and what is not. Co-IRIS was created to act on the inclusion of that knowledge as a building block in the IR field. It is premised on the idea that knowledge is fluid: people adopt and utilize thoughts and ideas regardless of faith, gender, nation, and so on. The mainstream idea that all knowledge presented by the West is from an Orientalist perspective, or that there is a clash of civilizations, are both notions antithetical to our mission. Co-IRIS was previously known as IRIS Research Cohort when it was created by Nassef Manabilang Adiong on December 29, 2012 through various social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+. His blog/website and Twitter feed served as temporary e-places where he formulated his thoughts and disseminated information. It was his aspiration to introduce Islamic contributions to the field of IR because he observed a tremendous non-recognition among IR scholars of theories and practices of international relations from Islamic scholars, particularly in the West. His dream is to find shared values and a mutual understanding between IR and IS. Up until he found avenues and academic tools for a starting point to materialize his aspirations, he was able to edit a book, create a section conference, and organize meetings with people with similar passions and interests. Firstly, through exchanges of correspondence with Dr. Raffaele Mauriello and Dr. Deina Abdelkader and then, at a meeting in Rapallo (Italy) from 30 October to 02 November 2013 held as part of the annual Exploratory Symposia organized by the European International Studies Association, Co-IRIS was born. Courses and programs exploring the complex entanglements between faith and global politics have likewise mushroomed around the world. Despite this ferment, reflections on teaching religion and international relations have so far lagged behind. This forum seeks to remedy this general silence. It brings together a diverse range of scholars from a multiplicity of national, religious, methodological, and theoretical backgrounds who teach across a variety of different geographical settings including North America, Europe, and East Asia. Contributors reflect on three broad themes. First, how do we engage with the contested character of religion as a category of analysis and practice, and with the multidisciplinary nature of its study? Second, how does the context within which we operate—be it geographical, cultural, institutional, or historical—influence and shape who, what, and how we...
