As Professor in the School of Criminology & Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, I teach courses on terrorism, WMD and several other security-related topics. I'm also a senior fellow with the Joint Special Operations University, where I hold a security clearance with the U.S. Department of Defense and conduct research on insurgencies, emerging terrorist threats, transnational criminal networks and special forces training. And I teach a course on terrorism and CT at the Fletcher School for Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University, as a visiting professor during the Spring semesters.

During my tenure at the United States Military Academy, (2001-2010) I taught courses in terrorism, counterterrorism, information warfare, international relations, comparative politics and sub-Saharan Africa. I also served as Director of Terrorism Studies, and led research initiatives and education programs for the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, covering topics such as terrorist recruitment, training, and organizational knowledge transfer. For much of this time, General (ret.) Wayne Downing was the Center’s Distinguished Chair – please visit the Foundation established in his honor, and consider making a donation: http://www.generaldowning.org

Beyond my work for UMass Lowell and JSOU, I serve as Co-Editor of Perspectives on Terrorism, an internationally-acclaimed journal of peer-reviewed scholarly research. I've also published 20 books and dozens of articles in journals such as Terrorism and Political Violence, Contemporary Security Policy, Crime and Delinquency, the Journal of Strategic Security, and Democracy and Security.
