Such a simple medium has great capability and, as is well known, a tenacious ubiquity; our offices, practices, and lives are filled with paper. We will see how the attributes of paper help us in both social and cognitive ways, particularly as a medium for drawing.

In a knowledge age, those aspects will be the distinguishing characteristics in a global work force and must be a goal of our educational pursuits. Design/methodology/approach: This paper examines research supporting the inclusion of character strengths in education for a borderless global future. Findings: Presently, most education and work deals with information and data. Technology has made data/facts/information more accessible but less unique for any given learner, worker, or place. At the same time, education has focused on simple distribution of content, knowledge assessment, and testing instead of the development of rich knowledge and non-cognitive skills. We see this in our reliance on testing and achievement, and, by and large, in a generation of students knowing what but not how, a generation less creative and more prone to set answers, a generation often lacking character strengths an...

A suburban independent public school district in Minnesota provided student responses to the Torrance Creative Thinking Test (TTCT) Figural Form A. The sample included 996 8th and 748 11th grades students. One-way ANOVAs were used to analyze the differences between males and females in the two study samples. Results of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences on the majority of the subtests between males and females in favor of the females among both the 8th and 11th grade students. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the fluency subtest between males and females among the 8th grade students. The results also revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in the fluency and originality subtests between males and females among the 11th grade students. Educational implications and suggestions for future work were presented.

The research venue was an upper level undergraduate course in computer graphics. Work in the course focused on the use of digital imaging software (Adobe Photoshop) and the creation, manipulation, use and understanding of images. Graphic design students manipulated images to address a series of complex topics. This study began with a hypothesis: computers may extend our cognitive abilities, inspired at least in part by the work of McLuhan.

The critique methodology and practice is how design skills are developed around the world within a studio. It is there that work is presented by the designer, criticized by the learned and other learners, and its virtues and failures are debated.
