Axiomatically, local education used the Process Writing Approach in producing writing composition. Unfortunately, the researchers thought that it is not sufficient to fulfill the component of good writing. By using the theory of scaffolding pioneered by Vygotsky, the researchers agreed to include vocabulary learning to scaffold the existing Process Writing Approach followed by application or practices. During application, the researcher as the teacher will provide a module where the experimental group will do writing exercises by using the new learned vocabularies. The researchers will use mixed method research where questionnaires of vocabulary and writing strategies are distributed where the results are the determinants of VAW module development.

Process writing, as distinguished from ‘Product Writing’, is playing a large role in ESL classes. Writing is seen as a communicative act with an intended purpose and audience. The teacher and other learners help the writer find a topic and revise drafts of a written piece until it conveys the intended meaning. While working to make their meanings clear, learners are assumed to acquire competence using the style, syntax, grammar and surface features of the language. During the writing process, students engage in pre-writing, planning, drafting and post-writing activities. However, learners do not necessarily engage in these activities in that order because the writing process is recursive in nature. Language rul...

Writing intervention modules can be effective add-ons to existing writing lessons to help students who are struggling with writing to cope with the demands of this difficult skill. Despite many writing interventions developed, little has been explored on including self-regulation strategies explicitly into these interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the development of a self-regulation strategies-based writing instruction module for secondary school students. The writing module adopted the Self-regulation Strategies Development model (SRSD) as its theoretical foundation and utilised a qualitative design through content analysis as data collection method. The six units writing instruction module was developed using the Kemp model as a design framework, including a need analysis, whereas the content validation was done through experts' panel evaluation. The results from the content validation suggest that the module can be used in the classroom to guide teachers to help them develop their students' self-regulation skills to help them cope with ESL writing. Future research suggestion includes testing the module's usability in real classrooms.

Sustaining the quality of teaching and learning of listening skills has become more challenging for everyone. Listening is one of the fundamental skills to acquire knowledge in an academic setting. Every instructor and learner need to perceive that listening is not an innate skill, understand the processes involved in listening comprehension, and integrate strategies while listening. The present study explores Metacognitive Awareness of Listening Strategies (MALS) and students’ perceptions about learning listening skills during remote learning. The current study was conducted through a multimethod research design where both quantitative and qualitative data were involved. Two instruments were utilised, which are the Metacognitive Awareness of Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) and the online discussion board. The participants were chosen based...

It has forced education systems worldwide to find alternatives to face-to-face interactions. Language instructors have made attempts to explore and utilise e-learning tools to enrich their teaching and assist learners in improving their language learning. This paper, therefore, attempts to shed light on the effectiveness of adopting e-learning tools in ESL speaking class and their perception of it. Fifty-three pre-university students from the Foundation Programme of the Preparatory Centre for Science and Technology were involved in this study. Data analysed in this paper were derived from a threaded online discussion via Dotstorming. The structured interview questions were carefully designed based on the objectives to elicit the students’ opinions on the topic of interest. To explore the effectiveness of e-learning in developing the students’ speaking skills, scores of In...

In this study, PBL cases are delivered to large groups of up to 150 students facilitated by a single course instructor within pre-university science courses. Lecture time is reduced using inverted classrooms (IC) with minimal effect on content. It is a multi-subject research made up of 4 smaller research involving the application of IPBLC in the teaching of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The researchers were responsible in researching and developing an IPBLC module for teaching 150 students each, wherein the impact of hybridizing PBL and IC on students’ achievements, learning attitude and conceptual learning of the subjects involved are investigated. Focus group interviews were used as a qualitative approach to gain an in ‐ depth understanding of the issue at hand. This r...

The problem of ESL pupils in Malaysia includes the hitches in understanding word implication and meaning, vocabulary as well as writing skills. Apparently, there is a difference between writing in the first and the second language. This paper proposes a method of writing with a module i.e. the VAW Method which is concentrating on vocabulary enrichment in order to develop young learners’ writing skills. The VAW method contains of vocabulary enhancement (V), application and practice (A) as well as Writing (W). It is expected to assist learners on developing the skills of writing academically. However, this method or module can only be implemented successfully by utilizing the cognitive process theory and most prominently the scaffolding theory in the process of writing. In education, scaffolding can be defined as a variety of instructional techniques practiced by the practitione...

Research paper thumbnail of The Development of an SRSD-Based ESL Writing Instruction Module for Malaysian Secondary School Students

Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2020

The disparity of the English language performance between the Malaysian rural and urban students ... more The disparity of the English language performance between the Malaysian rural and urban students remains a crucial issue, yet much is to be known about factors that actually influence the students' English proficiency across levels, especially those who live outside the cities. The objectives of this paper are to identify the Multiple Intelligence profiles and the significant intelligence of the urban and rural pre-university students at a public university in Malaysia, and to investigate whether there is any difference in the English writing test scores between the two groups. A demographic questionnaire, Multiple Intelligence Profiling Questionnaire (MIPQ III) and a Paper 800/4 (Writing) Question 2 of Malaysian University English Test (MUET) March 2016 question were used in this study. Sixty pre-university students were purposively selected for the
