THE 4th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE LANGUAGE, SOCIETY, AND CULTURE IN ASIAN CONTEXTS, 2016

One can affect the other. In Asia with its Eastern cultures, the use of language becomes very considered in social life. Asian people are stereotyped as supremely polite, especially in verbal communication. This generalization is preserved from the habits of Asians for not speaking directly to their interlocutors. It is believed that Asians tend to generate indirect expressions to avoid conflicts with other people. Practically, this kind of courtesy is expected to be seen in the use of foreign languages, for example in English. English origins from Western cultures which is known for its directness. Although Asians have a different culture regarding the directness and indirectness in conversation, it is certainly good to show that Asians are valuing and exalting human relationships by managing their interaction. It is important to take the indirectness not as a weakness but a language variety. Looking at this issue, English teachers in Asia as the facilitators of second language learning need to teach how the choice of words can affect the whole interaction. If the teachers are required to teach the cross-cultural values of Western and Asian society behind the use of polite language, how do the students themselves view this phenomenon? This paper presents the students' perception on the teacher's language in the classroom and the uniformity on the use of polite language. Several ways for English teachers to teach polite language by integrating it into the teaching materials are also proposed. This paper aims at raising the awareness of the English teachers in Asia to preserve the Asian identity by introducing mannered English during the classroom interaction and to create effective communication using global language to take a hand in globalization.

This complete and appropriate learning can be demonstrated by the teaching modules used by the teacher. In fact, teachers still encounter problems in compiling teaching modules that suit the needs of students in the current era of digital technology. This obstacle is also experienced by high school English teachers in Sidoarjo. One of the challenges is the lack of innovation in using and implementing information and technology-based English learning media. Therefore, with this community service, the authors aim to increase the high school English teachers' innovation through training on teaching module development with EdPuzzle integration. The success of this program was measured from a questionnaire filled out by the teachers. As a result, teachers who previously did not know what Ed...

Regarding this, consideration must be given to the change from online to face-to-face learning and its effects. The current study focuses on the learning and teaching that students liked best during the pandemic. This will help improve face-to-face education by making it more relevant to their needs. A survey was given to a random group of students at a private university in East Java, Indonesia, and they were asked what kind of education they liked. The results show that the students asked about their preferences wanted different things-for example, using online learning environments to access resources and take exams, getting better interaction, and having their teachers help them use electronic learning tools. For this, the primary parties in education could consider these findings to create a balance between face-to-face and online learning, most likely in the form of blended learning to create a viable educational system for the future.

It will be much simpler for students to communicate verbally and in writing if they have a strong command of the English language's vocabulary. Considering this issue, this research aims to investigate the correlation between how often Senior High School students watch English content on YouTube and how well they know their vocabulary. In this research, the method is quantitative and the design is a correlation. This research population was eleventh graders of a Senior High School in Sidoarjo, while the sample was 45 students majoring in science. The first data collection instrument was a questionnaire used to collect data on student habit of watching English YouTube content. The second instrument was a vocabulary test used to collect data on students' vocabulary mastery. Both results of data collection were analyzed and calculated using Microsoft Excel 2013 and SPSS version 26. This research found that the r-count was higher than the r-table. The r-count was 0.528 while the r-table was 0.294. It indicated a significant correlation between the two variables. The more often the students watch English YouTube content, the greater their vocabulary mastery. Then, H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected.

Student teachers in a Micro Teaching class were invited to assess the AR-based learning activities designed to aid vocabulary comprehension. Questionnaires were distributed to gather perceptions on the potential usefulness and suitability of the AR product for classroom use. The results affirm that AR holds great promise in enlivening and enriching English language lessons, as student teachers provided numerous creative ideas for its implementation. Valuable recommendations for product improvement were also obtained. As English teachers strive to develop effective teaching media, they should consider how such technology facilitates meaningful learning objectives. This research offers insights into the positive impact of AR in language education and highlights its implications for improving students' language proficiency in specific domains. Highlig...

Although it is considered as a normal phase, errors can lower students' confidence to be active EFL learners in the class. Accordingly, they need teachers’ appropriate corrective feedback (CF) to produce effective communication in the target language. Thus, considering the significant contribution of grammar knowledge and teachers' feedback on students' English proficiency, this paper aims to explore the perception of 12 EFL teachers’ practices and 91 students, both of whom are involved in an English writing class, about CF. The instruments used to collect the data was closed- and open-ended questionnaire. The results indicate that teachers vary their CF in terms of frequency and types. In addition, students show a different perspective on the effectiveness of CF in writing class. Also, teachers need to become...

As some teachers’ speech included managing classroom, giving instructions, and providing feedbacks, it is inevitable that a teacher would use the power and make the students uncomfortable. To soften the speech or lessen the impact to the students, a teacher could use some strategies of politeness inside the classroom. Seeing how linguistic politeness manifested by teachers could generally affect the students’ esteem, this study aimed at observing face-threatening and face-saving utterances produced by six lecturers during 6 different lessons in a state university. Combining Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness and Yule’s concept of face, this study would also contrast the language production by lecturers of different gender and different length of teaching experience to find out if they were correlated.
