Still Not Fair in 2014

A gendered issue we need to be more aware of is the cost difference that men are paid to women. Women don’t make as much money as men even if they are working in the same field. I believe by bringing attention to this inequality we may be able to change the outcome and the gap between what men make and what women make may alter.
The purpose of this blog is to enlighten people of this gender inequality issue that one might not be aware of in our day and age. Ignorance is the biggest reason why action has not been taken to fix this issue. As a small group of individuals we might not be able to make much progress in this matter however if we continue to spread the word and bring knowledge of this issue to others, we might be able to make a difference.

For example, if one person that reads this discusses this blog with their hr representative at their work then that alone might change how some things are done in their workplace. If a male and female employee are currently making unequal pay for doing the same task without seniority factoring into the equation then something needs to be done to ensure the female employee makes more so she is equal to the male. Perhaps a little bit of a raise is in order? This is just one thing that could be accomplished with this knowledge that men and women are still not receiving equal rights especially in the work place.

I am currently taking a gender studies course and this blog was written for an assignment. However, you need to know that assignment or not this issue is really important to me and it should be to all you ladies reading this as well. We have worked far too hard to still not make as much as men even if we have the same education and the same seniority rights, we won’t make what they do. You know it isn’t fair. Gender inequality needs to stop, especially when we’re trying to make a living for our families. According to our text book for this class, Women’s Voices and Feminist Visions Gender inequality is defined as, “the devaluation of “women” and the social domination of “men”. It is not the result of functions and social history. It is not the result of sex, procreation, physiology, anatomy, hormones, or genetic predispositions. It is produced and maintained by identifiable social processes and built into the general social structure and individual identities deliberately and purposefully” (128). Take a good look at that definition and the paragraph following it. Gender inequality literally is out of our control and has nothing to do with who we are as women. Instead, it exists solely because of society and how our society views these “social processes” (128). That’s why this mission, this assignment is so important. We cannot change how society views us as workers, mothers, women, if we don’t do something to bring awareness to the inequality.

Aside from talking to your HR representative about unequal pay, what do you guys think you could do to make a difference in regards to this subject?

International Transgender Day of Remembrance
St. Louis Candlelight Vigil: Thursday, Nov. 15th @ 7PM
Washington University in St. Louis, South 40 Clocktower
Reception to follow in The Gargoyle in Mallinkrodt Center

Come together to mourn the people murdered in the past year due to anti-transgender violence. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Several St. Louis religious leaders will be present to speak but the event is not inherently religious. Local transgender musician Adhamh Roland will also sing.

Following the meeting at the South 40 clocktower, we will then proceed into into The Gargoyle in Mallinkrodt Center where our guests will speak. Open to all and wheelchair accessible.

If you have questions, or need more information, email PRIDEWU@GMAIL.COM

At long last, UMSL got the LJ community.
I went to UMSL in 2001-2002. Used to be a graduate student, international one. My major was political sciences.
Hope to find class-mates here.
How is the university doing now, btw?

Current Location: Bucharest

I've been receiving cards in the mail asking me to call to update my information in the UMSL Alumni Directory. I'm fine with doing that, but I'm afraid the call will also include donation solicitation and hate dealing with that. Has anyone received a request to call and if so, was it anything like that?

I just transferred to UMSL from Webster which I really liked the people there but the school...not so much. I noticed there was talk about the UMSL Dems in which the meeting is tomorrow during a meeting I have sadly. I keep missing the meetings but I really want to come! Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thanks for finally putting up an UMSL community.
