The aim of this presentation is to propose a global model to predict the surface tension of binary solvents at various temperatures using a combination of the Jouyban-Acree model and Abraham solvation parameters. Methods: Available surface tension data of binary solvents at various temperatures were collected from the literature. The Abraham parameters of the solvents were computed using Pharma-Algorithm and the data were analyzed using SPSS 11. The mean relative deviations (MRDs) between experimental and predicted surface tensions were used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. Experimental solubility of dexamethasone was obtained in binary aqueous mixtures of ethanol, meth... more Experimental solubility of dexamethasone was obtained in binary aqueous mixtures of ethanol, methanol and acetonitrile at 298.2 K. The effects of micellization and pH were also investigated on the solubility of the drug. Experimental solubility data in the binary solvent mixtures were correlated by three co-solvency models, i.e. Yalkowsky, CNIBS/R-K, and the modified Wilson model. A new principle has also been investigated with the purpose of modelling drug solubility in the binary solvent mixtures using Polarised Continuum Model (PCM) by using the hybrid functional B3LYP method and 6-311++G** basis set. By matching experimental data with PCM modelling, we investigated the outcome of drug solubility in various mass fractions of binary solvent mixtures. Here we report the solute-solvent interaction energy as free energy of solvation (∆G sol), total electrostatic energy, dipole moment, total Gibbs-free energy and dielectric constant (ε) of dexamethasone in various mass fractions of ethanol + water mixtures.

The aim of this work is to explore the feasibility of EBC to measure tobramycin concentration using a synthesized sodium dodecyl sulfate-capped silver nanoprobe as a pilot study. In this study, EBC was collected from healthy volunteers using a lab-made setup after inhalation of 150 mg tobramycin to obtain a full concentration-time curve. Tobramycin concentration in EBC was measured by a synthesized sodium dodecyl sulfate-capped silver nanoparticle probe using λ522/λ400 UV absorption ratio on UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Tobramycin was detectable in EBC 4 h post inhalation with a limit of detection of 0.5 ng/mL. Mean (SD) Cmax and AUClast were 31.5 (6.8) ng/mL and 53.2 (25.5) ng.h/mL, respectively. Results demonstrate the possibility of investigating the bioequivalency of inhaled formulations of tobramycin employing EBC samples.

Method: A wound dressing was developed from electrospun nanofiber containing ascorbic acid and caffeine. In vitro drug release was performed at 25°C and 32°C. Wound healing activity of the nanofiber mats was tested in vivo using rat model with skin excision. Antifungal activity of the dressing was tested on Candida albicans using the disc diffusion method. Results & conclusion: Zone of inhibition was 6.7 mm for caffeine dressing; however, inhibition zone increased to 16.7 mm for samples containing both caffeine and ascorbic acid. Animals treated with ascorbic acid showed collagen deposition and very few fibroblast cells. Blood vessels and fibroblasts were increased in caffeine-loaded dressings compared with the ascorbic acid group. The findings of the present work suggest the benefits of topical ascorbic acid and caffeine for its high wound healing effects.

A recent report has suggested that oxaliplatin chemotherapy is associated with elevated DPD levels and chemoresistance pattern. As a newly developed chemotherapeutic agent, 17-allyloamino-17-demethoxy-geldanamycin (17-AAG) can be effective in combination therapy with oxaliplatin and capecitabine in colorectal cancer (CRC). DPD expression level can be a predictive factor in oxaliplatin and capecitabine-based chemotherapy. We evaluated DPD in mRNA and protein levels with new treatments: 17-AAG in combination with oxaliplatin and capecitabine in HT-29 and HCT-116 cell lines. Methods: Drug sensitivity was determined by the water-soluble tetrazolium-1 assay in a previous survey. Then, we evaluated the expression levels of DPD and its relationship with the chemotherapy response in capecitabine, oxaliplatin, and 17-AAG treated cases in single and combin...

This study was designed to investigate the combinational therapeutic effects of curcumin (CMN) and Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Male Wistar rats were divided into 8 groups: NAFLDinduced rats, NAFLD-induced rats + CMN, NAFLD-induced rats + UDCA, and NAFLD-induced rats that received CMN + UDCA. CMN (200 mg/kg) and UDCA (80 mg/kg) was administered orally for 14 and 28 consecutive days. Biochemical and histopathological analysis were conducted in all the groups. It was seen that co-administration of CMN and UDCA significantly reduced fatty degeneration, cellular necrosis, edema, and immune cell infiltration compared to non-treated NAFLD-induced rats. Whereas, combinational therapy caused a significant decrease in levels of SGOT and SGPT enzymes and expression of p53, caspase III, iNOS and bcl-2 mRNA and proteins, in variant with the treatment of CMN and UDCA, respectively. Co-administration of CMN and UDCA was also associated with the restoration of the levels of serum TG and HDL-C however, had no effect on LDL-C. It also resulted in an in TAC, GSH-PX, and SOD and decrease in MDA level. Our study concludes that combinational therapy of CMN and UDCA is effective for the treatment of NAFLD, as compared to their solo treatment.

In the life sciences, surface area is gaining importance in the characterization of materials during their development, formulation and manufacturing. The chemical activity, adsorption, dissolution, and bioavailability of a drug may depend on the surface of the molecule. In order to meet manufacturing challenges and develop new and better performing products with improved qualities, knowledge of surface tension is of utmost importance. An attempt has been made in this paper to review the application of interfacial tension in the key domains of pharmaceutical applications.
