This study uses the conflict theory put forward by Lewin, which divides inner conflict into three, namely approach-approach, approach-avoidance and avoidance-avoidance conflict. The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret the form of inner conflict in the main character in the short story Sumidagawa by Nagai Kafu. The benefit of this research is to contribute to the development of science, especially in Japanese literature in Indonesia. For general readers, it is hoped that this research article can introduce Nagai Kafu’s work as a reading reference, especially for the Sumidagawa short story, as well as a means for readers to appreciate contemporary works of Japanese literature. This research method use a descriptive qualitative analysis method to analyze each form of the main character’s inner conflict in each storyline of Sumidagawa short story. The data source for this research comes from the Sumidagawa short story by Nagai Kafu which is contained in the Aozora Bunko digital library along with an Indonesian translation book entitled Sungai Sumida which is included in the Collection of Japanese Short Stories by Hanafi (2017). The results of research on Chokichi’s inner conflict based on Lewin’s conflict theory show that he experiences a form of approach-avoidance conflict and avoidance-avoidance conflict. This form of inner conflict is represented in Chokichi in the form of desires that are not in line with reality, disputes that are not in line with the will, and confusion in dealing with a problem.

The Journey of the Wounding Heart :Trauma Healing Therapy in the Novel Malika's Sofa by Yoshimoto... more The Journey of the Wounding Heart :Trauma Healing Therapy in the Novel Malika's Sofa by Yoshimoto Banana Yoshimoto Banana's novels are referred to as 'self-help' literature. As a result of Yoshimoto's impactful role in literature, it has the power to be of use in self-healing. One of them is Yoshimoto Banana's novel which describes the search for meaning within oneself by reconnecting with nature called Marika no Sofa (Malika's Sofa). This novel tells the story of a female doctor named Junko sensei and Malika, her patient who has many personalities. The symptoms of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) are shown by Yoshimoto in this novel, and it shows an interesting part that is highlighted how Yoshimoto offers a method of trauma healing by traveling and dialogue. In addition, in this study, the friendship connection and empathy emotion between the therapist and her patient are seen from the imago dialogue approach in Alfred Adler's therapy. And then, followed by the natural therapy method using green trees approach. The researcher chose to use the concept of shinrin yoku (forest bathing), which is an immersion in the natural surroundings to have a good physiological effect and provide relaxation on the mind and body. Junko sensei and Malika's trip to Bali can also be interpreted as a desire (motivation) to leave old wounds in the healing stage. Both of them rediscovered something that had been missing in their lives for a long time, it is to feel and live a full life like humans.

The conflicting relationship between their physical and mental states results in a fissure where symbolic and physical violence become the main drive for diaspora to survive. This violence comes not only due to these diaspora’s own inner conflicts, but also due to the discrepancies between their native and internalized culture with the external norms and values that surround them in their current stay. The theme of diaspora and violence has been recurrent in American cinematic representation. As the most recent example, an independent film entitled Everything, Everywhere All at Once delves into this issue by incorporating a storyline of a Chinese-diasporic family in the United States who encounters various problems regarding their cultural differences to their surroundings. This article seeks to examine the cultural dynamics only of Evelyn, Waymond, and Joy in the film’s storyline amidst the abundance of multiversal plot points that serve as the pivotal exposition in the film. The analyses are textually grounded based on Homi Bhabha’s notion of liminality and contextually on the differing conception of violence in Chinese and American contexts respectively. This article draws from a Taoist concept of Wu wei to interpret the latter point. This study finds that the film represents diasporic characters within a liminal space that forces them to produce their own “maneuver” in order to survive. The parental problems that Evelyn has with Joy as well as her familial and ideological problems with Waymond are found to be propelled by such culturally-laden maneuvers. The film then can be read as an allegory of Chinese-American diaspora’s liminal experience in the United States. This allegory contains an ethical stance where the idea of non-violence (wu wei) becomes the utopian message of the film.

Moreover, it also examines Indonesians' perceptions of these literary translations at that time. The study shows that attention to detail was lacking in the translation process because of the restrictions in place during the period of emergency of the military administration and the limited space available in these magazines. However, none of this diminishes the essence of the stories that were translated. Although they contained a lot of propagandistic elements that were insisted upon by the Japanese military government, the most important factor in determining the final form in which they were published was the role of their translators and editors. Since the magazine was published in two languages, readers from both Japan and Indonesia each gained new knowledge about and experiences of the culture and thinking of the other through the literary works that were translated. Ultimately these works were a medium of cultural exchange between the two nations during the war.
