Since language is a human construction, it tends to be biased as it is mainly men's construction. Using gender perspectives, this paper attempts to discuss the imbalance in gender representations found in the examples given in an English learner's dictionary, that is, the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 3 rd Edition. A learner's dictionary is chosen because it is where one can find and learn the meaning of words. The results show that linguistically speaking, English is still a highly patriarchal and gendering language where men are portrayed better than women. Women tend to be subjugated under men's domination. Sexism and patriarchy still overshadow the meanings of words characterizing men and women. This means that men are still considered to be dominating women, despite the fact that the feminist movement has been going more than thirty years. Consequently, English language teachers should balance the gender bias by providing addtional materials that are gender neutral.

Such culturally bound terms need to be defined in a special way so that they can be understood well by people from different cultures and often require more extensive coverage than that provided in a general language dictionary. A dictionary of cultural terms is an ideal vehicle for this purpose, and an online version of such a dictionary can give greater flexibility in design and content. A single database may be used to supply material for such dictionaries, meeting the needs of a variety of users. This paper proposes a concept for an online Australian English cultural dictionary database, covering three key areas: the selection of culturally bound terms, data fields and display options. The design and principles of this database may also be extended to create databases for cultural dictionaries of other languages and cultures.

Every lexicographer always strives to write definitions which are not only accurate but also comprehensible to dictionary users. Nevertheless, as shown in this paper, the definitions used in the current LSP dictionaries have not been able to suit the needs of their users. Therefore, it is necessary to create a typology of definitions for LSP dictionaries which can be referred to by lexicographers when writing definitions. The typology is created by implementing the lexicographical function theory which focuses on satisfying user needs. The typology takes into account both text production and text reception functions, as well as encyclopaedic and foreign language competences of the users. The proposed typology is expected to serve as a model which can be referred to by lexicographers when deciding on how to write definitions for LSP dictionaries in general, and ESP dictionaries in particular.

This is revealed by the poor utilization of the access routes found in current Internet finance dictionaries. Consequently, users cannot effectively and efficiently find answers to their lexicographical problems. Firstly, there are Internet finance dictionaries which lack technological features and can simply be called meagre Internet dictionaries. Secondly, there are Internet finance dictionaries which utilize so many technological features that users incur high lexicographical information costs. In order to create better access routes, a sound theoretical foundation has to be established. This article shows that the implementation of the modern theory of lexicographical functions, which focuses on the users, results in a better design for future Internet finance dictionaries. With the proper theoretical basis, lexicographers will be able to create state-ofthe-art dictionaries that can provide effective and efficient solutions to lexicographical problems.

A mistake in identifying the users can make a dictionary simply a display without benefiting from it. This article starts with a review on how to draw up the profiles or characteristics of dictionary users proposed by Bergenholtz and Tarp (1995), Atkins and Varantola (1998), Denisov (2003), Tarp (2004), Bergenholtz and Nielsen (2006) and Tarp (2008). A theory on market segmentation process from Kotler and Keller (2006) is also discussed to widen the perspective on determining dictionary user profiles. Finally, thirteen variables are proposed in drawing up the profile of dictionary users.

ESP teachers and book authors need to know what words are considered technical vocabulary when creating ESP learning materials. LSP lexicographers need to know how to determine technical vocabulary when deciding the entries for LSP dictionaries. This paper examines four methods which have been used for determining technical vocabulary. These four methods are called vocabulary classifications, keyword analysis, term extraction, and systematic classifications. A financial text taken from the Chartered Financial Analyst book is used to analyze the merits and demerits of each method. Realizing the problems with those four methods, this paper rounds up with a proposal called a hybrid method for determining technical vocabulary. This hybrid method does not only present a better way to determine technical vocabulary but also expand the concept of words in order to obtain a more comprehensive coverage of the items that constitute technical vocabulary.
