Th e fi ndings indicate that a majority of respondents watch and have a favorable attitude towards Nigerian home video fi lms. However, in terms of preference between local and foreign fi lms, a small percentage indicated preference for the former. Th e study concludes that the high quality of production of American fi lms accounts for the favorable views held by respondents, even though it is apparent that these and other foreign productions no longer have a captive market in Nigeria.

The overall objective of this study was to find out if the views of audience members tallies with or is at variance with those expressed by the critics and experts. The study employed multi-stage cluster sampling and one thousand four hundred and forty copies of the study questionnaire were given out to respondents. The study found out that audience members have a favourable attitude to Nigerian home video films in spite of the emphasis on negative themes.

The situation is different with filmmakers utilizing the home video format. The latter have made Nigerian films come into its own easily displacing foreign films in the homes, movie theatres and television sets in the country. However, criticisms have trailed the Nigerian home video films. The paper takes the position that instead of the present emphasis on sex, violence, fetishism, witchcraft and its bedfellows, the stunning success of the films can be used to promote national development and positive aspects of our culture. The combination of the modern and traditional mode would result in greater effectiveness of the home video films and open up tremendous possibilities for the country and its people.

The study involved a survey of online respondents and Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) for Windhoek residents who did not 'like' the NAMPOL Facebook page. Similar to international studies that found that most public relations practitioners are using new media the same ways as they do with traditional media, this study, established that the public relations division of NAMPOL is not making use of the power of social media by actively engaging the community as equal partners on Facebook. This is despite spe...

The review of research presented here shows that there is a wide range of research taking up all major issues of public relations in the continent. For example, just as public relations research in the West has moved towards relationshipbuilding, Africa has developed its own perspective in this approach. The article traces the beginnings and historical development of public relations practice and research in Africa and shows some of the areas of particular originality in theory and research on public relations in Africa. The article concludes with suggestions for needed areas of research in the African context. Just as in other areas of human endeavour, public relations scholarship and practice in Africa is not very visible to the rest of the world. This means that its contribution to the practice is relatively unacknowledged and invisible. It makes the practiti...

The media are a critical player in disseminating such awareness, hence this study set out to determine how the Namibian print media framed the baby dumping phenomenon more so as scholars have detem1ined that what receives attention in the press is regarded as very important by audience members. The present study involved a content analysis of three newspapers: the government-owned New Era, and the privately owned tabloid, Namibian Sun as well as the highest circulating daily newspaper, The Namibian. over a period of four years (2011-14). From the findings, it was clear that the Namibian media showed a preference for straight-news reports about the phenomenon without any attempt at proffering solutions by su...

A purposive sampling technique was used to select the stories. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis (CDA) were used to analyse data and point out binaries and dichotomies inherent in selected articles. Thestudy found that balanced reportage of issues that affect San people is conspicuously absent. Much of the reportage is event-driven, lacking analysis and balance. Thestudy recommends new media discourses that shift from stereotyping to a discourse that restores and upholds the identity of San people.

This rewarding experience is in sync with the concept of media literacy as espoused by Brown (1998) and Zettl (1998) which has come to embrace production of traditional and new media content and away from its earlier fixation with critical analysis and appreciation of literary works and effective communication.

Commercials. An in-depth analysis of TV. Commercials of products in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage as well as laundry soap, communication facilities, baby product, confectioneries and transportation categories revealed that female characters were used as sex objects and were made to play the role of mothers and housewives. This portrayal does not, in the opinion of the authors, do justice to the many women who have made their marks in business and the profession hence the paper calls for a correct reflection of the role of women in TV. Commercials. More so since impressionable members of the society are likely to expect conformity with these portrayal thus doing damage to the cause of the womenfolk
