Research paper thumbnail of Beyond restoration ecology: social perspectives in Latin America and the Caribbean

ecosystems in the context of a region whose identity
is still under construction, Latin America and the Caribbean,
immersed in a social, economic, ecological and political
crisis, whose roots originate historically and politically
in colonialism and in the prevailing model of capital
accumulation. For the first time, insights and practical
experiences on restoration are gathered from most Latin-
American and Caribbean countries. Furthermore, this
book offers a social approach to restoration, which will
likely become preponderant in this field and in this region.
The authors claim that a Latin-American knowledge
of restoration is under construction and that this discipline
can be a significant tool to empower local populations,
which might, in turn, lead to a collective action of
change.
Case studies from 11 countries of the region were compiled,
involving multiple voices that emerge beyond generalist
principles and with a bottom-up approach. The main
idea of the book is to open a debate about the identity of
ecological and social restoration in this region.
This book is targeted to restoration specialists, volunteers,
environmental managers, researchers, politicians and
NGOs working on the complexity of socioecological restoration
in a region with unavoidable social problems. It is
intended for people with similar concerns to those of the
chapters' authors. This work tries to integrate a movement
on the rise, almost silent, born with its own narratives of
successes and failures that do not hinder its development.
Finally, the determination and commitment of Latin-
American and Caribbean social actors to restore not only
natural values but also social, ethical and cultural ones is
remarkable.

Its extreme poverty and marginalization levels are among the country's highest, superimposed in a context of severe ecosystem degradation. We evaluated the social-ecological resilience of two indigenous communities of this region engaged in agroecological projects by integrating the Resilience Assessment and MESMIS methodological proposals, using qualitative and quantitative indicators. The most critical aspects were the low quality of forest fragments, crop losses through hurricanes, lack of access to information, low socioeconomic infrastructure and lack of gender equity. On the other hand, formal and informal social organization is a major strength. Crop losses due to drought or pests are not significant, but a more critical situation is foreseen in the face of climate change. Local efforts drive the main strategies to maintain a minimum level of resilience but will not be sufficient if unaccompanied by structural changes.

Three different densities—64, 144, and 208 crayfish per m2—with and without shelters were used. Growth; survival; metabolic rate; tissue glucose; and total lipid, triglyceride, nitrogen, and energy content were measured. Animals stocked at 64 and 144 per m2 with shelter reached the highest body weight; those in groups without shelter had elevated levels of glucose (p < .05). Animals stocked at 144 per m2 retained the most nitrogen and energy (p < .05). Overall, the combination of medium density with shelters produced the best performance.

However, information about their interactions with root feeding insects is limited. Here, interactions between Trichoderma harzianum and the root-feeding insect Phyllophaga vetula, which is a common insect pest in maize agroecosystems, were examined. RESULTS Aplications of T. harzianum and P. vetula to the root system increased and decreased maize growth, respectively. Induced tolerance against the herbivore attack was provided by T. harzianum maintaining a robust and functional root system as evidenced by the increased uptake of Cu, Ca, Mg, Na and K. Herbivore tolerance also coincided with changes in the emission of root volatile terpenes known to induce indirect defense responses and attract natural enemies of the herbivore. More importantly, T. harzianum induced de novo emission of several sesquiterpenes such as β-caryophyllene and δ-cadinene. ...

It explores the case of an indigenous cooperative whose presence allows members market for their products; however, its agreement with a major supermarket chain increases their dependence and vulnerability. Despite facing chronicle shortage of financial resources and a violent context, the cooperative has strengthened social capital and response capacity, building on traditional community norms. Agroecology is conceived beyond farming practices and contributes to food sovereignty, education and natural resource conservation.

the indigenous Non-Government Organization Xuajin Me´Phaa 15
produces hibiscus and other organic products. The sustainability
of hibiscus production was evaluated by comparing organic
and conventional systems. The organic system showed lower
yields, higher levels of soil organic matter and erosion control,
and a higher benefit:cost ratio due to premium prices. A social 20
capital index was constructed considering aspects of community
organization, its level being higher amongst organic farmers.
The relationship between agroecological projects and
social capital is discussed under a context of severe environmental
and socioeconomic vulnerability
