ABSTRACT The influence of the grain refining method on some mechanical properties of non ferrous ... more ABSTRACT The influence of the grain refining method on some mechanical properties of non ferrous casting, by analyzing published data, is presented. Grain refining methods are grouped into: cooling rate control; nucleant agents addition; and mechanical agitation. Grain size decrease influence on the reported mechanical properties can be grouped into: decrease; improvement; and no observed influence. This analysis shows that there is a relationship between the grain refining method and the mechanical behavior of the studied alloys.RésuméOn présente l'influence de la méthode d'affinage du grain sur les propriétés mécaniques d'alliages non ferreux coulés, en analysant les données publiées. Les méthodes d'affinage du grain sont basées sur le contrôle de la vitesse de refroidissement, sur l'addition d'un agent de germination ou sur l'agitation mécanique. L'influence de la diminution de la taille des grains sur les propriétés mécaniques rapportées peut être classée en trois groupes: diminution, amélioration et pas d'influence observée. Cette analyse montre qu'il existe une relation entre la méthode d'affinage du grain et les propriétés mécaniques des alliages étudiés.ZusammenfassungDer Einfluß der Methode der Kornverfeinerung auf einige mechanische Eigenschaften von Nichteisen-Legierungen wird mit einer Analyse veröffentlichter Daten dargestellt. Diese Methoden der Kornverfeinerung werden gruppiert in: Steuerung durch Abkühlrate, Zugabe von Keimbildungsförderern und mechanische Anregung. Der Einfluß einer Verringerung der Korngröße kann eingeteilt werden in: Abnahme, Verbesserung, kein Einfluß. Diese Analyse zeigt, daß ein Zusammenhang besteht zwischen der Methode der Kornverfeinerung und dem Verhalten der mechanischen Eigenschaften der untersuchten Legierungen.

Au-Pt alloys in pre-Hispanic times in the
South American region Tumaco-La Tolita
(North Ecuador, South Colombia) is
reviewed in this paper. Two Au-Pt alloys
were made using small pieces of pure
gold and platinum in an attempt to
simulate some pre-Hispanic artisan
alloys. A “sintering” process (950°C,
cold and hot hammering) was done with
metallurgical considerations. The results
were analyzed with optical and scanning-
electron microscopy and compared
to the available microstructures of some
similar pre-Hispanic composition
alloys.
