Are football managers as efficient as coaches? Performance analysis with ex-ante and ex-post inpu... more Are football managers as efficient as coaches? Performance analysis with ex-ante and ex-post inputs in the Premier league There is a controversy on sport performance literature about what type of inputs might explain more deeply the performance of sports clubs (inputs specification controversy). By one side, several papers have analysed sports teams' performance using the match-related statistics or wages as inputs, well-known as ex-post inputs. By other side, some authors have criticized the use of these ex-post inputs, and recommend the use of ex-ante inputs, as the market value of the players. We have analysed the performance of football teams estimating technical efficiency with three different inputs specification. The methodologies employed were data envelopment analysis (DEA) and a bootstrapped DEA. Our sample is composed by English Premier League football clubs, during three seasons (2012/13-2014/15). The DEA results indicate that the correlation between the three models is positive and significant. The DEA bootstrapped results help to restate the robustness of the estimations and endorsed the inputs choices. The correlations of the estimations with market value and match-related statistics are the most striking (90 and 94%, DEA and bootstrapped DEA), which indicate that the existent discussion related to the use of match-related statistics as input is unjustified, because it does not affect significantly the efficiency' estimations.

We begin the analysis constructing a composite index of resilience for the 17 regions of Spain in the different periods of recession and recovery from 1977 to 2015. We use the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to obtain the index of resilience. In a second stage, we will analyze the factors that could contribute to the regional resilience. In order to segment regions, multiple factor analysis was chosen due to its strength in defining homogeneous groups of objects, or regions in our case. We will choose variables linked with determining the capacity of recovery of regions. In concrete, we will use variables related to capital (human, social, public, productive) and productive structure of regions. Moreover, we analyze the differences between our index of resilience and the Martin (2012) index. The findings suggest that those regions with productive structure focus on market services show a higher index of resilience in periods of recovery and those focuses on industry are more resilient in periods of crisis.

This paper examines the female distribution of employment by sectors in the EU 28, thereby contributing to the literature on the effects of the recession and subsequent austerity measures on female employment. An input-output model and structural decomposition analysis are used to assess the contribution of factors such as technological change, productivity change and final demand change. The latter had a positive impact over the period of analysis by creating new job opportunities for women, especially in the public service sectors, whereas productivity growth had a negative impact, particularly in the private service sectors. These changes have resulted in a reduction in the level of gender sectoral segregation; change in household expenditure again is the main driver of this reduction. Changing trends in labor requirements and gross capital formation have the opposite effect; thus, these trends increase the level of sectoral...

The results show that a more active intention to export has some predictive value for success in foreign markets. Other contributory factors include professional experience, firm size, geographical location and institutional support.

Research paper thumbnail of Agricultural productivity in the European regions: Trends and explanatory factors

European Urban and Regional Studies, 2011

This paper examines the spatial distribution of agricultural productivity in the European regions... more This paper examines the spatial distribution of agricultural productivity in the European regions for the period 1990-2000, using a twofold descriptive and explanatory approach, which allows us to overcome the drawbacks of conventional convergence analysis. The spatial distribution of agricultural productivity is summarized in a regional typology that enables us to evaluate the different trends of the European regions. The various inequality indices and estimated density functions reveal a decrease in regional agricultural productivity disparities, while intra-distribution mobility is found to be relatively limited during the study period. Additionally, the results obtained from the regression analysis are in line with those obtained at the national level. Finally, our nonparametric approach allows us to assess the role of variables such as economic development, agricultural structure and productive specialization in the dynamics of the distribution under analysis.

Research paper thumbnail of Cosmetic or Cutting? The impact of the modulation of EU direct payments on farm profitability in the Navarra region of Spain

The study analyses the effects of CAP direct payments and their modulation on farm profitability ... more The study analyses the effects of CAP direct payments and their modulation on farm profitability for a sample of 369 farms in the Navarra region of Spain. Cost-revenue ratios are calculated in order to highlight the impact of CAP direct payments, modulation and the valuation of own production factors at opportunity costs on farmspecific profitability. A multinomial logit model is employed for explaining the resulting profitability and relationships to farm characteristics. The results suggest that the rate of modulation, introduced by the 2003 reforms, will have a very minor impact on farm profitability and will exert little pressure on farms to restructure. Farms that can be profitable without any direct payments while valuing unpaid land and labour input at their opportunity costs are significantly more likely to be large, extensive, specialised in cropping and based in a non-mountainous less favoured area. Direct payments account for a smaller share of the gross revenue of profitable farms. Overall, the analysis highlights that the 2003 reforms do little to remedy the poor distributional efficiency and targeting of direct payments.
