unclutter_365 (original) (raw)
I've been clearing out an attic and gave an old (and probably dodgy) gas heater I found in there to a guy via Freecycle. I also chucked out four storage boxes, two cardboard boxes, three suitcases, two old bags, and a hideous burgundy rug.
I found a handhooked rug that I used to love in there, too, so now it's adorning my den floor. :)
The decluttering projects for this week: Finish off the attic and declutter the wardrobe.
Today I donated a bag of socks and two books.
Today I chucked out the following:
- A cooler icepack, last used when I was twelve.
- A gift set of toiletries, donated to charity.
- A Japanese gift bag.
- Two peg bags.
- Eleven aprons (the kind that go from waist to knee and are too short to be useful IMO), given to a potter.
- Three cake tins, recycled.
- One dismantled baby's cot, given to a friend with a baby.
- One chest freezer, given to a friend. Unfortunately I found a deceased mouse under it.
Today I donated to the charity shop the following shenanigans:
- A tea set consisting of a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl, six cups, six saucers, six side plates, and a cake plate. They were lovely but I drink all my tea out of enormous mugs, frankly.
- A laptop cover that I didn't like the look of.
- A framed print of a Benin palace guard. I'd had this thing for donkey's years - it was leftover stock from a shop I used to run. I liked it but not enough to keep it.
- A DVD.
- Two magazines.
- Three CDs.
- A pair of bookends.
- A book stand.
I made a list of the areas of the house remaining to be decluttered. First up: the staircase. I removed a bag of groceries, a packaged window blind, a backpack, six dog collars and leads, and a handheld hoover. All either chucked out or put away where they're supposed to go. :)
Today, an old record player and its enormous speakers, and four sacks of glass bottles, went to the recycling centre.
Today I got rid of one brand-new ironing board cover (unwanted gift) and a vintage sugar shaker (annoying design). Out, random items, out!
Today I decluttered a box of books, some DVDs, a pair of flip flops, a storage box, an old mobile phone and its charger, and a soap dish.
Today, I've binned 25 ancient - and I mean ancient... Windows 2000! - bootleg software CD-ROMs and given away five books.
Six sacks of my dad's clothes are in the back of a friend's car on their way to the charity shop.
Charity shops are brilliant for decluttering at all times, but especially when going through a deceased person's belongings. It definitely eases the pangs of giving away a loved one's things to be able to think that they are going to help someone else.
