In the World Health Report 2000 WHO introduces ethical issues in the elevation of health systems ... more In the World Health Report 2000 WHO introduces ethical issues in the elevation of health systems responsiveness performance. Although we consider this a positive step, the parameters considered in the Report are in some cases unsustained by extensive research. This is the case of autonomy, which is postulated as a "universal expectation". As we think that this is culture-linked issue we argue that such kind of universal categorizations lacks substantive empirical evidence. We undertook a short review of a small intentional sample of international literature, in order to demonstrate that regardless of the philosophical status of autonomy as a principle or category there is not background enough to postulate it as a universal expectation. We propose international collaborative research to define the issue, using qualitative research methodology.

El primero, hasta el año 2001, en el que hubo un predominio de la transferencia de las pautas disciplinares hacia el Sur, y el segundo, comenzado en el año 2002 con el desarrollo del Sexto Congreso Mundial de Bioética, en Brasilia, organizado por la Asociación Internacional de Bioética y la Sociedad Brasilera de Bioética, y que tuvo como tema central "Poder e Injusticia". Si bien este acontecimiento respondió a trabajos desarrollados por sus autores desde años anteriores, fue en esta oportunidad que tomó forma pública la existencia de una mirada latinoamericana sobre la bioética, cuyo eje estaba situado en el plano de la justicia y que rechazaba por inapropiadas las propuestas estadounidenses centradas en los temas "micro" de las relaciones interpersonales e interprofesionales en el ámbito restringido de la atención de la salud y en los dilem...

The proposal by Rhodes to rethink many of the fundamental notions underpinning medical research e... more The proposal by Rhodes to rethink many of the fundamental notions underpinning medical research ethics, which includes an hypothetical proposal for citizen recruitment to participate in research, raises several interesting points for debate, some of which have already been tackled by other commentators (London 2005; Miller 2005). I'll comment some issues pertaining to (a) the social lack of trust on the research system, (b) the need to grant an adequate communication between participants and researchers, and (c) some prerequisites that should be accounted for in relation to the conscription hypothesis.
