The interdisciplinary contributions to this volume explore this question from the perspectives of "War and Peace," "Jesuits and Diplomacy," "Negotiating with Faith," and "Court and Diplomatic Celebrations". Special attention is paid to those art genres that were suitable for easy distribution due to their reproducibility, such as medals and prints. But also paintings, tombs and ephemeral festivities like fireworks served the manifestation of claims to power. The exemplary analyses provide a broad view of the political dimensions of early modern transcultural artistic exchange in Europe and beyond.

John V of Portugal became king in 1707 in a pivotal moment for the European balance of power. The Kingdom of Portugal was still demanding the same privileges as its powerful neighbours and the relation with Rome was considered a vehicle to obtain them. Arts and music had a special and unprecedented place in the king’s plans and this book approaches that dynamic from several interdisciplinary perspectives.
The unifying thread across this book’s chapters remains the omnipresence of Rome as a paradigm on several levels: political, religious, intellectual, artistic, and musical. Rather than providing an exhaustive analysis of the period as a whole, this study offers a fresh approach for English readers to this classic, but little known, topic in Portuguese national historiography.

Following the difficult decades that ensued after the rebellion against the political order of the Catholic Monarchy (the Restauração of 1640), Portugal had established itself firmly, under Pedro II (1683-1706) as an independent nation to be reckoned with on the international scene. João V went even further, though, transforming Portugal into a cultural powerhouse through his lavish patronage. This new book, which brings together studies by a new generation of scholars coming from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds , brings us a fresh interpretation of an intensely studied yet often misunderstood reign. The editor of the book, the Spanish art historian Pilar Diez del Corral Corredoira, offers readers a vast fresco of the relations between the courts of Lisbon and Rome on several levels, dispelling myths and shedding light on hitherto unknown, neglected, or misunderstood individuals, episodes, works of art, and diplomatic gestures. As Del Corral rightly points out in her introduction to the volume, João's youthful-and unfulfilled-dream of a two-year European tour hovered over his policies of support of cultural and scientific innovation. Unable to make it to the places he wished to have visited, the monarch made those places come to him. One key stage for Lisbon to become a major player on the European stage was Rome. Through the eight chapters of this book, we explore the mani-fold ways in which Rome served as a model and as a stage for João V's scheme of Portuguese aggrandizement. Through the importing of Roman cultural models , the sending to Rome of emissaries, artists, and musicians, and the receiving of Italian masters and their artistic, architectural, and musical practices to Portugal, the Portugal of João V became a meeting place, a veritable contact zone, between the Iberian and Italian peninsulas. In this sense, then, the desire to make of Lisbon a new Rome went beyond earlier attempts at symbolically linking up the two polities. The book is divided into two parts, one dealing with Rome and its importance as a theatre for the exercising and flaunting of Portuguese political and cultural power, and the other with how Italian influence played out on the ground in Lisbon. David Martín Marcos takes up the question of João's fashioning of Portugal in Rome through what were often intricate and complicated diplomatic overtures. These were not devoid of conflict and controversy, to © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2021 |

This book is intended to broaden the understanding of the connection between water and power through a series of case studies, which without being exhaustive, will provide information on the great versatility of this subject. This volume is organized in three thematic parts. The first part, with the title “Iconography and Politics”, deals with the use of aquatic iconography and the recreational use of water as an instrument of power. The second part of this volume is entitled “Beyond the Western”, and encompasses three studies that explore the concept and the control of water from America to the Philippines. The book’s third and final part deals with “Celebrations and Music” and compiles studies from an artistic, musicological, and even of marine biology points of view.

I wanted to study Ariadne's love story with Dionysos, who granted her inmortality, and I used an iconographical analysis in order to create an exhaustive catalogue of her in Attic pottery from 575 B.C. to 300 B.C. Besides the catalogue the outcome of my research was to gain a better understanding of Ariadne's role as a divinity in the entourage of Dionysos. I approached the topic analysing the different versions of her myth and the depictions on pottery and how pottery provides us also with new information not known through the literary sources. To sum up my conclusions, I believe Ariadne must be understood as a paradigm of three states of womanhood: nimphe, wife and lover.

To date, this is the only known testimony of the celebration at this venetian venue. The account not only attests to the importance of the marriage itself and the manner in which the celebration unfolded, but it also allows us to speculate about a series of connections between embassies, highlighting the existence of an efficient communication network among the Spanish legations, with its central hub in Rome.

André de Melo e Castro in 1707. It contemplates the circumstances surrounding the selection of his palace, the training of the members of his household, and certain aspects of Roman ceremonial by analysing the account books preserved in the archives of the Palacio Nacional de Ajuda (Lisbon). Until recently, historiography had only cited two palaces as residences of the diplomat during his long stay in Rome (1707-28): the Cavallerini and the Cesarini palaces. However, this study brings to light an earlier residence, the Buratti palace, and looks at the problems associated with the move to that residence, the decoration and furniture expenses, its implications in terms of the ceremonial deployed ad hoc, and the creation of a network of artisans and artists trusted by Melo.

The main scope is to show the importance of the duchess as ‘embaxatriz’ and a relevant character in her husband’s mission (Arbeitspaar), through the analysis of several layers of the Duchess’ public life. Some of the events studied will prove the struggle to maintain spaces of power through ceremonial and precedencies in the midst of the War of the Spanish Succession.

None of them has a known author, and they are kept as part of the Prado’s eighteenth-century drawing collection. This article aims to establish the authorship of these drawings through analysis and comparison with other works in Portuguese
museums, as well as through an investigatinon of the artist’s early training in the drawing of Roman stone carvings. Further, these drawings are studied and dated in the context of the artistic production of their author as both draughtsman and engraver: he was none other than Francisco de Matos (1699-1783), better known as Vieira Lusitano.

Within the phenomenon of the Grand Tour this study analyses how those young Portuguese arrived to Rome, how did they participate of the structures for training such as academies, seminars, workshops or private tutoring and how did they find their place, if so, in such a competitive market. Besides the article sheds some light on the national academy of Portugal and how it provided accommodation and training for some of those talented musicians and artists and how it worked as a piece of the complex network of institutions and people that supported those generation of young people.

His particular choices as head of that institution, and his way of encouraging his pensionnaires had a tremendous impact on the production of those young artists. However that impact is usually measured within the frame of French and Roman art but not in a broader perspective more in consonance with the international status of the institution. Through the analysis of the correspondence between Vleughels and the Public Works Minister in Paris, this article addresses the relationship of that charismatic man with the two Iberian crowns. On one hand, the article deals with the rather unknown and short-lived Portuguese Academy in Rome, whose connexion with the French Institution was more about rivalry and strategic positioning than a proper institutional relationship. On the other hand, the article also tackles the turbulent relationship between Vleughels and the Spanish pensionnaires, which almost resulted in a diplomatic crisis, even if the Spaniards were supposed to enjoy a particular status at the French Academy thanks to the political alliances between
the Spanish and French monarchs.

Although our approach is undoubtedly limited, this volume intends to open the conversation so that other researchers decide to explore this fascinating subject and, above all, to give some examples of its wide interest to an audience unfamiliar with the matter. The authors who have accepted the challenge of writing for this issue have chosen themes ranging from the most local to the transoceanic, through the study of artistic materials, agents and commercial actors to the application of quantitative methods to create a relational database that sheds new light on primary sources. The number closes with an extensive interview with Luisa Elena Alcalá, one of the leading researchers and teachers on Viceregal art, who has kindly agreed to answer our questions about the future of art studies in Spanish America, the importance within the perspective area of the art market and other topics.

That journey caused strong divisions in his court and had an impact in his own role’s vision and in Portugal’s one in the European arena. A new hypothesis will be presented regarding the nature of that journey and its links with the European tradition that partially refutes the current historiographical approach of the topic. Furthermore this paper will deal with to the date unnoticed documents that shed some light on the topic from the French point of view and which also reveals new particulars about the royal stay in Rome.

The study starts with a summary approach to the proverb’s history in written sources, through the Medieval Age to Renaissance, in order to understand the deep dependence on texts of the first depictions in Sixteenth century art. The most striking trait of the Latin proverb’s representations is the geographical concurrence limited exclusively to the North-Centre of Europe. The main scope of this paper is to answer why this topic is recurrent in this particular area of Europe and also to explain the bipolarization of the images’ use, so to speak, from the moral warning to the erotic purpose.

The theater of the Palazzo di Spagna in Rome, seat of the Spanish Embassy in the Papal City, is r... more The theater of the Palazzo di Spagna in Rome, seat of the Spanish Embassy in the Papal City, is rather unknown. After the diplomatic breakdown with the Pope Clement XII Corsini in 1736, the newly elected Cardinal Troiano Acquaviva (1696–1747) became one of the most prominent figures in the Roman court. Besides his political mission, his main concern was to guarantee the stability of the new Bourbon King of Naples (Charles of Bourbon, son of Philipp V and Isabel de Farnesio).
Acquaviva was also a magnificent and generous patron of arts and music. He supported young Spanish artists as Felipe de Castro, but he also hired important theater specialists as Giovanni Battista Olivieri or renowned musicians as Giovanni Battista Costanzi. His artistic and cultural network was strengthened through his lavish celebrations and “conversazioni” that were the very core of the embassy’s life especially after he became also the minister of the king of Naples (1737). He commissioned the theater to fulfill the necessity of a more suitable space for the crowded celebrations he usually hosted. Based on scarce and recently unearthed documentary sources, this article provides for the first time a reconstruction of the commission and also a glimpse on the naturally extended artistic and musical network operating around the fabulous patronage of this eminent cardinal.

It addresses the complex political and social environment in which the ambassador had to fit in as the representative of the Catholic Monarch and how this feast was the first representation of his power after two years of diplomatic tensions with the Pope.

in the 1730, in Rome. My approach is based on the Correspondance des directeurs de l’Académie de France, namely in Nicolas Wleughels’ letters with the Duke d’Antin, the French minister. Interestingly, this primary source not only sheds light on the logistic aspects of their accommodation or their mission and conflicts in Rome, but it also allows us to better understand the interesting formative programme, mainly designed by Wleughels, they attended there.

XVIII) without any institutional support and who were able to gain royal support afterwards. Through the study of those pioneers it is possible to understand the roots of the Spanish Academy in Rome and it sheds some light also on the San Fernando's Fine Arts Academy in being (Madrid). Reconstructing the way those artists lived and worked in Rome is the first step to grasp the Spanish role in the transnational phenomenon of the Grand Tour.

Abstract: This article deals with the study of the official document of the dowry of Cecilia Fernández de Heredia. This document reveals the richness of her dowry and it allows us to take a new look at the History of Collections in Spain. Valentín Carderera was the first who paid attention to this painting collection, but now due to the discovery of the original official document we know more about the paintings. Furthermore, this article provides the evidence to refute the belief that there were two important collectors in Modern Era Saragossa; the Fernández de Heredia collection and the Miguel Marín de Villanueva one. In fact, the documental and genealogical analysis shows they are one and the same.

Although peace between Spain and Portugal was re-established when the Treaties of Utrecht were signed, the two countries remained wary of each other, and the double betrothal, or “the exchange of princesses” as it was known, was a means to heal old wounds. María Bárbara de Braganza was to become queen of Spain through her marriage to the future king Fernando VI, and Mariana Victoria de Bourbon would become the Portuguese counterpart through her betrothal to José I. Even though these royal weddings came after a failed engagement between the Spanish princess and the French king, Louis XV, the Spanish initiative was highly acclaimed in Lisbon.
Among the various written and figurative manifestations proclaiming this important celebration are two drawings for a commemorative medal designed by Francisco Vieira de Matos (1699-1783), aka Vieira Lusitano, one in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and the other in the Museu de Évora. Until now it has not been possible to determine whether the medal was ever minted, but the drawing has gone largely unnoticed by scholars, who never associated it to the double wedding, even though historiography specialized in numismatics suggested it as such.

He put into words his wish to returning to Rome the city where he has studied. That quote comes from a letter part of the rich epistoclar exchange over the years between both friends. The aforementioned correspondence is known to us through Bottari's Raccolta. It allows us to understand the professional and friendship network built by Vieira during his stay in Rome.

Several years later, de la Vega still remembered the old master in the well-known Lettera a Giambattista Ponfredi that shows the respect that he still treasured. That encounter, to the date, has been neglected by the scholars, but there is no doubt of the seminal role it played in the development of their professional lives, since both parted to Rome thanks to Vieira’s suggestion. This article deals with the impact of that encounter, why it happened in Seville and how is it possible to spot Vieira’s influence, namely in Felipe de Castro.

This chapter deals with the first generation of Spanish architects pensioners in Rome, mainly with Domingo Lois Monteagudo and his ecclectic work during his stay in Rome supported by San Fernando's Fine Arts Academy. Monteagudo's "taccuino dei disegni" is the starting point to study not only its contents but also the circle where it was created. His drawing notebook allow us to go deeper in the understanding of the strong influence exerted by the Académie de France in the training of young artists and also its role as a melting pot in the central years of the Eighteenth-Century in Rome. The notebook serves as an excuse to reconsider the influence of French artists as well as Piranesi in the development of the decorative arts especially through ornamental drawings.

Different strands of historiography have pointed towards the possibility of these companions being nymphs and maenads, but Ariadne, the god‟s only known companion, remains generally overlooked. This paper deals with her and her meaning in the entourage of Dionysos. [There is a full translation to English as "Ariadne.Dionysos wife and lover" in the Articles section of my profile]

The fascinating process of assimilation and adaptation of Italian artistic and musical models by ... more The fascinating process of assimilation and adaptation of Italian artistic and musical models by the Lisbon court throughout the 18th century is one of the most relevant phenomena of the Portuguese cultural history, with repercussions that extend to most of the territory. Through the works preserved in the National Library of Portugal, this exhibition aims to present to the general public how this fruitful creative association between the most Western country in Europe and the Italian peninsula, heart of the Mediterranean, has been undertaken. The itinerary of the exhibition will focus on transversal regards on music and the visual arts, two fields that are often addressed separately but share common paths.
From the 16th century, Rome began to attract artists from all fields, eager to learn from the legacy of its ruins and the modern masters who turned the Eternal City into the artistic centre of Europe. At the same time, travellers from the northern countries also arrived in Rome with the same zeal for learning, both from a mundane and cultural point of view. This movement gave rise to the phenomenon of the Grand Tour, which would have its outbreak in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Portugal had a golden age in the 18th century thanks to the fabulous artistic and musical commissions done by King John V, the Magnanimous King. Although the earthquake of 1755 eclipsed a large part of the architectural and artistic legacy of the first half of the century, the magnificence and cosmopolitanism of Lisbon left marks that prevailed as signs of identity in the following decades. Considering the travelling perspective and the artistic and musical exchanges, the set of pieces selected for the exhibition intends to show how the relations between Portugal and Italy, centred on a continuous flow of people, books, scores and works of art, created a rich path of communication between Rome and Lisbon. In this route and cultural exchange stand out musicians like António Teixeira, João Rodrigues Esteves and Francisco António de Almeida and visual artists like Francisco Vieira Lusitano, José de Almeida and Inácio Oliveira Bernardes, among others, but also diplomats, cardinals and other personalities from the political, ecclesiastical and cultural circles of the time.
In parallel with the exhibition will be held at the National Library of Lisbon the international congress Rome and Lisbon in the eighteenth century: music, visual arts and cultural transfers (March, 28-29), organized by the research group “Historical and Cultural Studies in Music” from INET-md (NOVA FCSH) and the Department of Art History of UNED (Madrid), as well as a series of guided tours, associated with concerts and musical programs.

This conference is the third in a series dedicated to palaces in eighteenth-century European cities. Following the first conference focused on Rome (UNED, 2019, https://artepensamiento.hypotheses.org/3672), and the second on Madrid (UNED, 2020, https://artepensamiento.hypotheses.org/4467), the third and last edition is dedicated to the palatial heritage of the city of Lisbon. We seek to explore the particular case of Lisbon during the eighteenth century, which the urban plan and constructive history in Lisbon literally were blown off during the earthquake in 1755, so we can actually deal with two cities, one before and another after the earthquake.

This conference is developed within the frame of the research project Ramón y Cajal (2017-22131) devoted to “ Artistic academies, diplomacy and identity in Spain and Portugal in the first half of the 18th Century Rome” by Dr Pilar Diez del Corral. The secondary aspect of the aforementioned project to be addressed is the accommodation problem that the representatives of foreign countries encountered when in Rome. The impact of this issue goes beyond the mere anecdote to affect diplomatic and logistical aspects of their stay in Rome. From an art historical perspective this approach allows for the study of the economic investment made by those people, the composition of their household from the staff to the material display, issues regarding restoration, constructions plans and other works in the palaces, etc.
The main scope of this conference is to bring together scholars specialized in several areas: architecture, social history, decorative arts and so on, to explore the topic of Rome as a city of foreigners, who usually came to the city to get church positions, develop diplomatic missions or commercial ones that forced them to stay for long periods in the city.

As the title of a recent publication by Gordon and Morales put it, globalisation was born in 1565 when the Spanish sailor Andrés de Urdaneta established the flourishing trade route of the Manila Galleon that was the final piece of the puzzle in an intricate network of trade routes. By the end of the century luxury items originating in Asia, Oceania or Patagonia and South Carolina routinely travelled from Mexico City to Seville and from Spain to the other Spanish-dominated cities in Europe such as Naples, Palermo, Brussels or Antwerp, and later Lisbon, before reaching all of Europe.

However, these research fields have often been approached in parallel paths within the traditions of each of the disciplines, without establishing in most cases a true dialogue between the different areas of knowledge and disregarding cross-cutting issues. On the other hand, the study of artistic relations and cultural transfers presupposes an in-depth and up-to-date view of the historical and social context of each city in their own peculiarities. This international conference intends to promote new approaches to the history of music and the arts through multidisciplinary dialogue that involves different points of view.

Taking as an example the War of Spanish Succession, but not limited to it, we encourage researchers to explore the uses of art for that purpose.

My paper will examine the idea of a “Prinzenreise” in relation with Don Carlos’ sojourn in Parma from 1731 to 1734 when he was only fifteen years old and already the heir of the fiefs of Parma and Piacenza. Carlos was the third male son of Philipp V of Spain but his first born with his second wife, Elisabeth Farnese, and he was destined to be king of Naples and Sicily and then King of Spain. This paper deals with his years as Charles I, duke of Parma and Piacenza, after the death of his childless grand-uncle Antonio Farnese. That period of his life was crucial to understand his later development as young King of Naples. It is already established that the count of Santiesteban was the key to understand the new image of Charles VI as king of Naples and Sicily. So my aim is to go through Charles’ letters to his parents in order to learn if his stay in Parma and his several journeys could be read as a sort of “Prinzenreise” in order to prepare him for his future as a ruler.

This paper deals with the arrival in Rome of the Portuguese special envoy D. André de Melo e Castro in 1707. It considers the circumstances surrounding the selection of his palace and the training of the members of his household, by means of examination of the account books that are preserved in the archives of the Palacio Nacional de Ajuda (Lisbon). Until recently, historiography had only cited two palaces as residences of the diplomat during his long stay in Rome, (1707 - 1728): the Cavallerini and the Cesarini palaces. However, this study brings to light an earlier residence, the Buratti palace, and looks at the problems associated with the move, the sumptuary costs, and the creation of a first group of artisans and artists of Melo’s trust.

The history of the institution is rather obscure but embodies a paradigmatic example of the difficulties to establish a leading academy in such a dynamic environment as Rome. I approach, through the study of the scarce written evidences, the location, the staff and the organization of the institution and I try to propose a hypothesis that explains why the academy was not the successful endeavour that should have been.

When Calouste arrived in Lisbon in 1942, leaving behind his Parisian residence in the midst of the II World War, he probably wouldn’t have thought that Portugal would become the new and last home of his collection. But maybe due to an unexpected turn of events, maybe just to the warm welcoming he enjoyed in Lisbon, the city would host the splendid collection in a place built ad hoc and opened to the public in 1969.

By then the Portuguese King had been on the throne for fifteen years and, piece-by-piece, his magnificence plan for his country was coming together.

«Spero che non fra molto, a Lisbona le spalle a Roma il volto», said the young Francisco de Matos... more «Spero che non fra molto, a Lisbona le spalle a Roma il volto», said the young Francisco de Matos, aka Vieira Lusitano (Lisbon, 1699-1783) to his friend and colleague Agostino Ratti (Savona, 1699- Genoa, 1775).
